It's the end... but the moment has been prepared for. Sort of...

And, it almost didn't regenerate in time....

First it seems my first TiVo HD is nearing its end. With it constantly locking up, and other problems that started ... but the moment had been prepared for.... With the Premiere Elite that I had gotten recently.... Just need to work on watching or moving the shows that are in it. Then it would free up the My DVR Expander to add to the Premiere Elite. And, since I have lifetime service for it...I suppose I would look into a Weaknees upgrade for it. But, I'll stay with eventually returning the cable cards for it.

And, now the end of my Samsung HLN4365W1X seems to have come. It came to me on May 30th, 2004, and it started having its latest issue on Sep 21st, 2012. Guess just over 8 years. I kind of knew it wasn't going to last forever. Since, it had consumables (bulbs) and mechanical components (cooling fans & color wheel).... and eventually I would like to upgrade.

I had replaced the bulb a couple of times....getting about 3.5 years.... Which is kind of sad, since I had gotten the 3 year extended warranty, because of the stories of premature bulb failures in this model. Now, its hard to tell what's wrong...the internet is kind of mixed on matching my symptoms with what might be wrong. But, I suspect the Ballast. It'll eventually come up, but it makes a lot of noise...and then it can't be turned off. It did settle down on Saturday so I could watch my Doctor Who...so I held off a bit on pulling the trigger to replace it, though I probably shouldn't have. I did some research on whether this was something I could fix myself, but in the end decided that it wasn't worth the hassle given the price of what a new TV is and how much sooner I'd get it. Just means, the other thing I was wanting to get this year will have to wait another year. Though its starting to look a lot like Apple isn't going to come out with anything new this year anyways.

I kind of had envisioned someday getting an LED TV in 1080p, and 50" that fits into my stand....perhaps even 3D.

The stand is just wide enough to accomodate a 50" providing the bezel isn't too wide. But, when that DLP came out, I wasn't ready to make that kind of leap. And, until recently, LCD/LED displays are either like 46/47" or 55"....the 50" size seemed to only be Plasmas.

And, I had considered whether it would be so bad to get a Plasma....though I think I want to not worry about when my next display is going to be for a while. So, LED/LCD TV is probably what I'll have to stay with.

Wonder if I can get something delivered next Saturday....

The end is near for ReplayTV.

My ReplayTVs that is.... Today, I canceled the rest of my ReplayTV subscriptions.

I had canceled a subscription a while back when one of my ReplayTVs died. But, I continued with the other 4 monthly units. I still have the 2 lifetime units.

I haven't watched anything that I've recorded with my ReplayTVs since that cancellation, in fact there was probably some length of time before the cancellation that I had stopped.

But, I wanted to be sure that I didn't need to go back.

Last weekend, another one of my ReplayTVs went away....it did its maintenance reboot and then got stuck in a reboot loop.

The first ReplayTV to die was the second ReplayTV that I had acquired, it was probably the first one that I upgraded to 250GB. I had first patched a 5060 to fully use its 80GB drive, but I had voided and done that for other reasons. And, that gave me the experience to go and upgrade all my ReplayTVs to 250GB. The last one to get upgraded went to 300GB (well, it first went to 160GB....using the 160GB drive from my very first ReplayTV...and then a 300 to make it close to what the others reset were....plus I was using it for OTA HDTV recording.

Anyways, the one that went last weekend was my very first ReplayTV....a 5160.

Along the way I acquired a 5040, then another 5040, then a 5060. It was supposed to stop there, but I was renting a cable SD DVR which died...so I downgraded to a regular cable box and got a 5080 with lifetime. Later I got another 5080 with lifetime. And, then in the final days of 5000s...I picked up a refurb 5040, which I then upgraded to 250G to be an additional OTA HDTV recorder. That was the only one that was post 250GB+ to have a drive fail and I then patched a new drive to go in it.

When the first ReplayTV died, I decided to go without. And, now its time to completely be free of them.

Plus I've been looking for a new TV....it'll probably be the same size as my current one, but 1080p and LCD. Apparently they don't make 50" DLP's any more...and 50" LCDs have too thick of a bezel to fit my current stand (so 46" is probably as big as I can go...though that isn't to say that I couldn't look at a new stand.) It probably will be a year or two before I take that plunge. I'm hoping that the current bulb will do that and then replace the whole thing when it gets too faded. But, one thing about new TVs...is they lack S-Video inputs. Though ReplayTV can do component....it doesn't do it very well.

OTOH, I'm planning to make the plunge into Blu-Ray before Xmas. But, I guess I'll just live with 720p....

I don't know what I'm going to do with the desubscribed ReplayTVs....not sure the logistics of trying to sell and ship them. I will probably hang onto the two lifetime units short term....thinking of playing with OTA HDTV now that things are fully transitioned, of course I might find that I still can't receive anything OTA. Guess it depends on how much interest I have in playing around....

Now instead of subjecting some poor random forum to a long rambling thought, I will try to consolidate those things into this blog where they can be more easily ignored profess to be collected thoughts from my mind.
