New Linux Server

Well, the new (if you can call it that) server is up.

That's the Dell Optiplex GX100 I got off of eBay for like $35. Celeron 433MHz/128MB. The only upgrade I did to the box was drop in a 40GB drive that came out of one of my ReplayTVs. And, installed a version of SuSE on it.

I moved the role of DHCP server from my old linux box to this one, along with NTP. And, made it my master DNS server. I reconfigured my old DNS server to be the slave DNS. And, an NTP peer.

Minimal changes to the rest of my network. Next is to work the WRT54GS in, and setup the Lingo box. Might cleanup the network nest....

Toshiba Satellite 5105-S701 Memory

Link: http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/configurator/modelsinfo.asp?SysID=14438&mfr=Toshiba&model=Satellite+5105&Sys=14438-Toshiba-Satellite+5105-S701%2F5105-S702&distributor=0&submit1=Search

Some how I was always under the impression that 512MB was the maximum amount of memory I could have in my laptop.

But, I happened to be on Kingston's website browsing for memory for other systems...and decided to see what it said for this machine.

Well, it says I can go to 1GB. Now the machine came with both SODIMM sockets filled...so I'll need to buy two new SODIMMs and discard the old ones (or save them incase I should land a machine that can use them...or sell them on obay/ebay).

Though to decide...do I really need more memory in my computer....considering that its over 3 years old and I'm contemplating replacing the laptop around when it turns 4.

Though I'll probably keep the machine around for other things.... Something like what Quirky mentioned HERE.

WRT54GS v1.1 is here

But, I don't know if I'll get around to playing with it before the weekend.

There are some home network changes I've been meaning to make that I need to get done before I start experimenting with the new router and the Sveasoft.

Now instead of subjecting some poor random forum to a long rambling thought, I will try to consolidate those things into this blog where they can be more easily ignored profess to be collected thoughts from my mind.
