Faxing over VoIP

While it wasn't a very scientific test. Because I changed both my router and added the DSL filter, and the destination fax is different.

I just successfully set two faxes since making the changes.

Instead of, before, sending a 3 page fax taking 21+ minutes and failing on page 3...but enough made it that I got an email confirmation that they can start the process.

Just now I sent a 3 page fax via Lingo and Vonage. The Lingo one took 3:11 to send while the Vonage one took 1:43 to send.

Not sure what that says about Lingo versus Vonage....especially since Lingo is going to be where I'm going to park my fax machine. Lingo does distinctive ring...so for a little bit extra, I'll probably reimplement this solution for sharing voice and fax on a single line.

Only hitch in the process is my Vonage number is of the non-portable variety...and I really don't want all that hassle of telling the whole world about a new phone number. But, I have toyed with getting a Universal number in a different state or perhaps even a different country....so that's what I'll probably get for Lingo.

Port Triggering in Sveasoft

Well, I was kind of hoping I could do it all using just the web interface....and it was close, I suppose.

There's probably some bug in how the iptables are set for the triggering from the web interface. So, I added some iptables commands to rc_firewall for port triggering, and has it working.

Down side, the way I have the rules jammed into the iptables...is that they occur before the logging events, so I lose the ability to see traffic that is passed by a trigger or traffic arrives when there wasn't a trigger.... I'm running RC6a, and I hear pre7 just released...though I'm not ready to rush out to this version just yet.

WRT54GS w/Sveasoft and QoS == better latency

Well, one nice thing about the QoS/Wondershaper of the Sveasoft is that it has helped my ping times. As shown in my DSLreports line monitoring.

Now instead of subjecting some poor random forum to a long rambling thought, I will try to consolidate those things into this blog where they can be more easily ignored profess to be collected thoughts from my mind.
