Flight of the Feline

Almost the kind of thing that would make me want to have a cat again....if it wasn't for the fact that I'm allergic and had a cat taken away from me for my own good.

Though catching my cat in action for such great pictures....I wish I had thought of that. Wonder if having a clean place is needed though.

HP Photosmart 8450 and my Laptop

Well, I tried to install the software on my laptop.

That proved to be a problem. It only gave two choices for install...install just the driver or install everything. Well, I kind of wanted the extras, such as the Instant Share (at least the implication is that I can print to my home printer using it when I'm on the road.)

Well, it installed way too much other stuff that I didn't need, including a network drive that pointed to the memory card reader in the printer. Kind of interesting, since I had considered using Network only for hooking my desktop to it...but opted to stay with USB connection. Though had I known, it wouldn't have constrained where I could locate the printer as much. Though having it close to my main computer is still a good thing.

Anyways, I decided that the setup was overkill and filled my notebook startup with all kinds of stuff that I needed to shed. So, I uninstalled and tried to see what would happen if I tried the light install.

Turns out the uninstall doesn't uninstall everything, just the device was removed (and all the startup and tray bits). Okay....but I went to access the Instant Share, and it said no printer connected....wonder if I've missed something, but how do I access the service if I'm not physically connected to the printers that I want to access?

Pop the CD in again to reinstall. Well, it didn't ask if I wanted a minimal or typical install...it just jumped straight into doing the typical install again. Cancel that and it does a restore, reboot, etc.

Oh well, maybe I do have to share the printer from my desktop...so that my laptop can access it. And, that's what I've ended up with.

So, how does Instant Share work?

SA8000 HD DVR: Dead Again

I guess it was too good to last....my HD DVR has failed me again.

This time it was kind of more interesting....I turned it on, and it was stuttering. I pressed LIST, and many of my recented recorded programs were showing start and end times the same.

Uh oh. U-(

Another odd thing I noticed was that part of the onscreen graphic around the list display was missing. Later I noticed that pressing INFO twice, resulted on black on nearly black information display....guess all the onscreen graphics for that screen was missing?

I started pruning out the bad recordings, and looking to see which I can re-record at a later point...when the box rebooted itself.

Afterwards..."There may be a problem with your harddrive". I tried numerous reboots, to no avail.

So, I called Time Warner customer support. After navigating numerous menus and spending about 20-25 minutes on hold, I got somebody. Explained the problem, was asked if I had already tried rebooting and unplugging. Then asked me to reboot again anyways while I was on the phone. Suggesting that she could send something to my box during the time that might make a difference.

It didn't.

Still harddrive problems....plus it was having trouble with live TV....like it would try to buffer a couple of seconds and then freeze to a grey screen. And, LIST continued to report that there may be a problem.... :**:

Is Netflix Throttling me?

Link: http://www.netflix.com

:??:

I don't know why....I'm probably one of their best customers. I've been with them since January 1999.

I'm on a 4 out plan and have been since the very beginning when I switched to the 'Marquee' system (from the 1 week rental plan that they used to have).

Last weekend (July 1-4th)...I watched all my selections and mailed them back. They received one on July 5th, and I got the next on July 6th. Which is normal. Since I'm in Columbus, Ohio and the Nearest Netflix center is in Dayton, Ohio.

They then received the other 3 discs on July 6th. Later that day, they emailed saying that my next 3 selections had shipped...and that I can expect them on July 7th.

But, no sign of the discs yet.

There should be no reason to be throttled, given my usage prior to the July long weekend.

Just a look at my blog will show my DVD view habits....I only watched two(2) DVDs in June, two(2) DVDs in May, two(2) DVDs in April, three(3) DVDs in March, one(1) DVD in February, two(2) DVDs in January.

Furthermore there were stretches pre-blogging of my NetFlix viewing activity, where I didn't watch any DVDs in a given month....yet they keep getting my monthly subscription fee.

HP Photosmart 8450

Today, I finally decided it was time to setup the new printer....

On the most part it was pretty straightforward. It kind of fits, being that it is bigger than the old printer....though the way it sits on my stand, there is no traction so it likes to slide around alot....especially when I'm trying to switch paper or load ink cartridges. And, it'll probably do it when I try memory cards in it or connecting a camera to it (should I choose to try this).

But, I did decide to have it become the memory card device for my computer. Since it uses only a single drive leter, rather than my USB reader which is using up 4 drive letters.

So far the only problems I've had is that I can't seem to setup multiple print queues like I did with my DJ970Cxi. So, the default is to print FastDraft double sided, etc. And, no queue shortcut for when I want to print good or better. Guess we'll see how I live with that.

The other obstacle was configuring Stamps.com to work with it. I got the rear tray option to hold #10 envelopes. The shape step tries to use Letter size to figure out what orientation to print as, but the printer detects the size error and won't let it. So, I had to pick a shape and see if that worked. Online support for Stamps.com, mentioned that this might be the case with some printers. So, that seems to be okay. Though I haven't printed any actual postage. Namely because I only had the one #10 envelope left.

Not sure when I'll get to doing photo printing...but eventually I'll be dumping a bunch....partly to have hardcopy backup  of my vacation photos, and to send some to my parents....

Now instead of subjecting some poor random forum to a long rambling thought, I will try to consolidate those things into this blog where they can be more easily ignored profess to be collected thoughts from my mind.
