« blog software upgrade....What were the seven stages of grief? »

On the way to the mall, I did stop at the office again. To send myself a quick fax to see that my fax machine can do faxes via Lingo VoIP. Though I'm not sure it was a reliable test...because the office uses an HP Laserjet 3100 as its fax machine, and I have an HP Officejet V40xi as mine. So, there might be something more to how they'll talk to each other even when the line isn't as good as it could be.

Until this test, I had only tried sending the occasional fax. And, things have been split... They tend to either quickly either work or not work. An improvement from before I added the reversed DSL filter (and got Sveasoft Alchemey). Before it would take an extremely long time to either work or not work (10+ times longer).

I had previously noted that between Vonage and Lingo....Vonage was faster at sending faxes. It was a limited test, since I got Lingo after the DSL filter and router upgrade. The router upgrade was partly driven by the plan to add Lingo to my mess.

The thing is Vonage supports 3 CODECs....30kbps, 50kbps, 90kbps....I've tried all three and choose to use the 90kbps one all the time. The sound of the 30kbps is acceptable for voice calls, while the 50kbps is actually the worst of the three. While relatives tell me that they all sound bad. But, my Vonage and Lingo bills combined is cheaper than my SBC bill ever was. And, they are still less than SBC's offers to get me to come back. Where they keep advertising unlimited local calling....though I vaguely recall they offered unlimited continental US calling in one package.

While my US calling will probably increase short term....my normal usage is calling Canada, with the occasional call to the UK. And both Vonage and Lingo include Canada as part of its 'free' calling area. Lingo adds the UK.

Downside with Lingo is that it only does one CODEC...and it is the 30kbps one.

Personally, to my ears there is little difference between 30kbps and 90kbps for voice calls. But, it surely means something to a fax machine. And, it probably means something to people I call.

Now instead of subjecting some poor random forum to a long rambling thought, I will try to consolidate those things into this blog where they can be more easily ignored profess to be collected thoughts from my mind.
