Home server upgrade

Well, the upgrade of my home server from RedHat 7.2 to 7.3 didn't work.

I've decided to leave it as 7.2.

I guess I've made too many customizations to the machine for the upgrade to cope with it. :**:

Later, I tried upgrading the kernel to the latest from FedoraLegacy...and then the machine wouldn't boot. Then I remembered that the box is an odd ball architecture....after backing out the kernel upgrade and manually installing the Intel architecture kernel (rather than the Athlon one), that got my machine up and running with the latest kernel from the 7.2 line.

I wonder if the upgrade from 7.2 to 7.3 failed because of this mismatch of architectures? Apparently the gist is that the mobo-chipset is typically associated with Intel CPUs, but the system uses an AMD CPU (originally a Duron 800MHz, upgraded to an Athlon XP 2000+). In some of the prior kernel upgrades, I resorted to getting the latest source and building custom.

Originally the box ran headless, because the stock AMD kernels wouldn't talk to either the integrated graphics or network adapters. And, getting it to work the network adapter was more important than trying to figure out the graphics.

I did get the graphics working at one time, but opted to keep it disabled for performance reasons.

Wonder if the upgrade would work if I loosen the exactarch setting and leave the kernel upgrade to manual? :??:

Now instead of subjecting some poor random forum to a long rambling thought, I will try to consolidate those things into this blog where they can be more easily ignored profess to be collected thoughts from my mind.
