New server build?

While I had my Linux box down for the upgrade....my network, of course, was down. Since it is the server at the center of it all. Got me thinking that perhaps, I needed a different machine to be the center....some minimal PC that is doing just DNS/DHCP/NTP for my home network (though maybe SSH/Stunnel and some other stuff, as well).

Well, I got this P75 (a Dell Optiplex GL 575) that I picked up a few years back because I was thinking of using some Linux Router distro and use it for that. Well, after lots of fiddling around to see if I can get a distro onto it....I gave up....insufficient remaining functionality in the hardware, and I don't really want to buy new parts for it.

So I surfed around looking for a cheap boxes... Settled on bidding on a Dell Optiplex GX100 on eBay....hopefully I can use it as is...at most upgrading the harddrive (since I have a pile of drives that I pulled from RTV5040s around).

The specs are Cel-433, 128MB and 6.4GB....which is comparable to the NIS/NTP servers that I built at work. Though in addition to upgrading the drive (just because I can), I might see about upgrading the CPU.....so it won't be as slow for wasting spare cycles on BOINC.

Though the P-II 400 and P-II 450 at work that do NIS master/slave service are slowly contributing to 2 out of 3 BOINC projects (don't think I'll bother having them join ProteinPredictor, even though it has returned).

Should work better to....according to some quick web research, this box will come back on after power loss. Something my current Linux box won't do.

Now instead of subjecting some poor random forum to a long rambling thought, I will try to consolidate those things into this blog where they can be more easily ignored profess to be collected thoughts from my mind.
