Verbatim DVD+R DL update

Good News. The Verbatim DVD+R DL's work great.

I have burned 3, one for each of the first 3 seasons of "Strange Days at Blake Holsey High". And, they are all playable. I didn't actually watch all the episodes...I only looked to see that I could load the menus and then play an episode near the beginning and near the end.

I just used a regular DVD-R for burning Conclusions

Software Wish: "I'm Busy"

I was just thinking now there ought to be a program (for Windows) called "I'm Busy" (or "IM Busy", though it should work more than just IM programs).

I just had another phone interview, which I thought was very challenging and interesting...hopefully I'll get at least some response from it. Anyways, each time that I have one of these calls, I've gone to various programs in my system tray to quiet things down.

Namely, I set busy (or on the phone) status on each of the IM programs on my computer (ICQ, AIM, Y!, GTalk, MSN....I guess that's everything, at work I used to have Rhymbox....because Livelink IM uses Jabber, but requires a client that does SSL...there have been others, but lack of buddies on those has had me discontinue them inorder to keep sufficient real estate on my screen open ;) )

But, there's other things I want to toggle when setting 'on the phone' state. Namely, change ANT4MC to offline status (so I won't have the computer announcing the arrival of new mail to the dozens of accounts I have) and change BOINC Manager to 'suspend'. Because when BOINC is running, my computer sounds like a jet engine.....

Anybody now if such a program exists?

Verbatim DVD+R DL 10 pack

Well, while I was over a the mall picking up a prescription....I decided to check out what is out there in Verbatim DVD DL media.

My usual preference is DVD-R, though DVD+R seems more widely available. I wasn't sure if I was going to buy, it was more to see how much. Though I want to burn those images for "Strange Days at Blake Holsey High" that I've been working on. Namely because I've run out of space to have both images and the raw input data on my system....actually, I can't get to working on "Conclusions" until I address my space problem.

First I checked Walmart, because that's where my prescription refill was waiting at, they had the 3pk for $11.88.

I then walked over to Best Buy, and then decided to go past them and check out OfficeMax first.

In OfficeMax I spotted that they had the 10pk for $19.99 after instant rebate. Well, for that price, I couldn't pass on I snapped it up and that concluded my shopping trip.

Now to burn Season's 1, 2 and 3 to DVDs and try them out....wonder if there's a marathon in my future. Kind of bad, since I have purchased DVDs that need watching (namely the Firefly TV DVDs, and then the Serenity movie DVD....)

Right-click is slow or weird behavior caused by context menu handlers

 While laying in bed, getting ready to face the new day, an idea popped into my head.

I should hit Google and try to solve an annoyance that had happened to my computers that I couldn't figure out when it started, etc.

At first I searched on progressively longer search of "right click multiple open no longer works", finally a few pages in....I found a dated blog entry about ContentMenuHandlers and there being a bad entry. Though the blog entry solution was delete everything, except maybe the real obvious ones that won't be broken.

I didn't like that solution.

So searching on just "ContextMenuHandlers" I eventually found the above page. I opted for method 2, and tried to download ShellExView. Clicking on the redirection link in the article didn't work, so I used Google to find me a direct link (though I could've bypassed the redirect if I was more awake...they both found the same location).

Going through the non-Microsoft Context Menu handlers...I eventually found the offending handler. Scrolling further right, I found that ShellExView also tells me when the handler was installed (I had figured it would be something 'recent', but didn't know how to track down when a handler had been installed under 'method 1'.)

Turned out on January 6th, I installed "WhoLockMe". Something I installed, but have never used. There was a reason that day that I thought it would help me, but I probably ended up rebooting instead...and then forgot all about it.

Though it was during a period of time when I was having lots of other issues/conflicts with other installations....such as the scanner and TurboTax....

Upgraded to MPEG Video Wizard

Well, I decided to upgrade my MPEG-VCR license to MPEG Video Wizard. Even though MPEG-VCR would be sufficient for the processing needed to create DVDs of "Strange Days at Blake Holsey High", I had become spoiled by the interface and there are other files that I will want process later that MPEG-VCR won't handle directly (and a different [no longer supported] package that I own has ceased working on my system, and I don't feel like figuring out which Windows patch has killed it).

After getting my PSN, I upgraded to the latest version of MPEG Video Wizard and processed about half a dozen Strange Days at Blake Holsey High episodes (namely from the first part of the second season). Since I had previously only done the entire first season and "Inquiry"....and attempted to burn a DVD-R DL for the entire first season (so far this has been unsuccessful, and I don't know when I'll try again....though space is starting to become an issue on my computer :?)

I don't plan on adding any more disk storage to any of computers in the immediate future (and hopefully, I won't experience any situations that will require me to replace existing drives....again >:( )

Strange Days at Blake Holsey High - Conclusions

Well, I got to watch the "Conclusions" to Strange Days at Blake Holsey High.

Which I was worried that my job hunting and hopes to find a new job before the money runs out ;D Though it certain is a big improvement from the old days where there was a lot of month after the money.... :P

It was interesting to finally see how they resolved from the ending to Season 3, and the rest of the series, etc. Though I do find myself wanting more.

I recall reading somewhere about speculation on a 5th season...though I see no mention of that now, so I guess it really is over.... :`(

I wonder what is on tap for Emma Taylor-Isherwood. ;)

How to use the Blackberry 7100 as a GPRS Modem

I've been meaning to try this with my BB7100t for a long time, and because part of me has started to worry about what I'll do for Internet access should I find that next opportunity and have to move....I finally started looking into again.

At first it didn't seem to want to work....but after repairing my BBdm installation and uninstalling/reinstalling drivers and rebooting a whole bunch of times, it finally appeared and I was able to create a modem and connection for it. :)

Then I successfully connected and played around a little bit. It has been a long time since I've been online using something other than broadband....even slow broadband (such as satellite from a cruise ship) was better than what I was getting. Basically it was comparable to dial-up. :p

Using the speed test at, I recorded a speed of 26 down and 8 up. Which seems in line with what I recall reading somewhere.

Using a smaller/different test, I was able to record a speed of 38k. GPRS is probably not that well suited to large file transfers....

At least now I know that I'll have another option for connecting to the net.

New Automatic S-Video Switcher

Got an unexpected surprise from UPS today. I ordered this on the weekend, and had no indication that it had been I wasn't expecting it today...given that yesterday was a holiday for some people (there are no holidays...or weekends...when you are unemployed :..( )

A few days ago, I was wondering why a program I was watching from downconverted HDTV seemed almost black and white....just the hint of color. Wasn't until I noticed that the commercial advance indicator was also affected, that I figured that it was something wrong in my connections.

Eventually, I found that temporarily switching to another source and back would clear up the problem....temporarily. :**:

As it happened, the ReplayTV I was watching was the one that directly connects to the Sima SVS-4 (rather than the others that go through Sony SB-V55A boxes).

So, I guess that means the Sima SVS-4 4-input/2-output automatic S-video switcher was dying. I had acquired it used from eBay, and it replaced a Sima SVS-4D that also had problems. I thought about scoping out eBay for another such unit, but decided that I would probably prefer something new this time.

Interesting Development on Scrubbing Bubbles Automatic Shower Cleaner

I was checking my Junk folder in Eudora recently, because I spotted a false positive (former co-worker email)...and came across another false positive.

Apparently the person that manages the product at had come across my blog posting, and apparently it is known that there were a few faulty units in their 2-city test market (Buffalo/Rochester, NY and Columbus, OH). He's offering to send me a new one to try out, etc.

Which is a tough call.

While its demise was last straw for my experience with it, there were other issues I had which make me reluctant to want it occupying space in my shower. Plus also given my current situation, it might not be available to me for much longer.

Other search activity hitting my blog has been people trying to find out how to buy the product and its refills from other markets and countries. In the event that I do find another job before my money runs out (or in the event that I don't), I'll likely end up in another location. And, who knows whether it'll matter.

Now instead of subjecting some poor random forum to a long rambling thought, I will try to consolidate those things into this blog where they can be more easily ignored profess to be collected thoughts from my mind.
