Recent Memory Upgrades

Now that I didn't have the memory stress on the Linux box....it is a reasonably fast box, though not the recommended minimum 2.4GHz for Seasonal Attribution....but it does now have the recommended 1GB of RAM. So, I decided to start running this project on this box.

This box had trouble running the regular climate prediction project, but apparently Seasonal Attribution has no issues running on such an old (stable) Linux box. Its a Red Hat 7.3, which has been getting updates from Fedora Legacy....but soon FL will EOL support for the distro. Though I'll probably continue to run Red Hat 7.3 on here....until such time as I replace it with a new machine....hopefully never. ;D

While I was browsing around on eBay looking at memory upgrades...I decided to check out the price of memory upgrades for my other two computers. The Windows desktop needs memory to be upgraded in pairs...so that'll probably wait a while until I'm more in the mood for doing that upgrade.

But, it had always been my intent to upgrade the other Linux box to at least 512MB...since TCP/IP auto-tuning is based on a 256MB threshold...and physical 256MB of RAM doesn't translate to 256MB to the Linux kernel. And, it only has a 256MB stick in it. So, there had been a plan to get either another 256MB stick or a 512MB stick to make it happier. I then recalled that this box might be upgradeable to 2GB....which meant that I could probably buy a 1GB stick for the open memory slot and make it into a 1.25GB machine.

This is what I did. And, now this box is also participating in the Seasonal Attribution BOINC project. It also doesn't quite meet minimum recommended systems. It is only a Celeron 2.2GHz machine.

Now instead of subjecting some poor random forum to a long rambling thought, I will try to consolidate those things into this blog where they can be more easily ignored profess to be collected thoughts from my mind.
