Guess I spoke too soon

The new memory isn't working out.... :..(

I woke up this morning to find that a few hours after I had posted, my computer had locked up.

Rebooted the computer, it locked up once it started working hard.

Rebooted the computer, it looked up while starting up.

Rebooted the computer, it locked up once I tried to do something on it.

Now to see about returning it....again. :**:

Finally got 2GB

I've been meaning to upgrade the memory in my main desktop.....up from its stock 1GB.

Earlier this year, on a spur of the moment I ordered 2GB of memory off of eBay for it. Only after I had paid for it, I realized that I had ordered 2GB in 4 sticks of memory rather than 2GB as 2 sticks. The difference meaning that I could then only upgrade my desktop to 2GB of total memory instead of a bit more.

Though when I was planning the upgrade, I was only planning to take it to 2GB total anyways. But, things have a way of growing to consume all available memory.

In fact, right now....having had the extra memory for only mere minutes...free memory reading is fluctuating between 500-700MB. Though I do have BOINC running in the background (instead of the normal, only when idle).

Select Comfort Dual Heated Mattress Pad

Last winter, my electric blanket of umpteen years stopped working. Because of my situation at the time, and being close to spring...I opted to not do anything about it until this season.

I had been on the fence between whether I would get an electric mattress pad or another electric blanket this time around. There has also been less need, because the windows in my new place aren't drafty like they were in the old apartment. And, the bed isn't next to the window, etc. It still gets a little cold some nights in the bedroom, and cranking the heat is wasteful...plus it sometimes results in it being too warm.

I thought about getting a wireless/remote thermostat system. So that it can vary its temperature based on where I live...rather than the hallway where the thermostat lives. There can be a significant difference (5+) in temperature at the thermostat and my bedroom or the living room.

But, that'll probably be a project to look at when I own the place.

Terk HDTVa Amplified HDTV Antenna

In my continuing quest to receive Fox in HD, I picked up this antenna....which says it can get signals up to 45 miles away (Fox-HD is ~43 miles away).

Unfortunately, this didn't work out. I'll switch back to my HDTVlp in a bit, because it works better at pulling in the one OTA HDTV station that I can get.

Oxy-Nickel Battery Compatibility

Made a bad discovery today....Oxy-Nickel batteries don't work in everything.

I was at something tonight, and thought about taking a digital camera with me....but not my main one. So, I dug out the old Konica-Minolta Dimage X20. And, not being sure of the battery that was in it...I grabbed a pack of Oxy-Nickel batteries and popped those in.

It acted kind of weird as I went through the setup (mainly to update the clock on it). But, didn't think much else about it.

Until I reached for the camera to try to take a show with it. It wouldn't work. :##

Norton Antivirus 2007 (and 2006)

Probably without too much surprise, I opted to purchase the Norton Antivirus 2007 that I've been trying on my main computer.

Even though I haven't worked out all the kinks, I would once again stick with this. That'll be the 3rd time I've purchased Norton Antivirus for this computer. First time I bought the trial that was bundled with the machine (NAV2003)...but the version was kind of hinky with SP2, and it didn't get along with BOINC....the autoprotect would consume 25% of my CPU when BOINC was active...and I wanted BOINC to get 100% of the available idle CPU.

I then tried exploring other packages....even purchased a copy of McAfee. But, in the end I purchased NAV2005.

After the year was up, I was unemployed...but starting a new job, where they had a site license that allowed the corporate version of NAV to be installed on all (work and personal) computers. So, I ran this version. But, the University switched from NAV to TrendMicro. And, the Trend caused a lot of problems (still does, but policy only requires its use on computers that connect directly to the campus network), so I went looking for other packages for my personal computers.

And, now I'm back to NAV2007.

I think I want an Apple TV

Link: http://www.apple.com/appletv/

I've been catching up on various shows that I recorded during the summer (while I was busy securing a new job and relocating, etc.)....and the latest array is Eureka.

I'm hooked. Unfortunately, my ReplayTV couldn't cope with the screwiness that is SciFi....which fails to deliver content at the scheduled time. Sometimes it missed the show completely...most of the time it started 5 minutes late.

But, I do have recourse....either I could find somebody else with it on their ReplayTV to send it to me, and wait patiently for its arrival. Or, a second option I discovered (while browsing on TV.com), I could purchase the episodes from Apple iTunes.

Except that it would be much more enjoyable if I could watch the episode on by 43" HDTV and 5.1 surround sound system than on my computer....

Wonder if there'll be a University price for this....

Didn't get one year

I thought when I bought Norton Antivirus 2006, it was for a 1 year subscription. Well, it isn't even 11 months yet, but after a long spell of not using my laptop....I've discovered that it is showing my subscription as expired.

I'm still trying to decide if 2007 is what I want to be running on my desktop....Yahoo! Widgets seems to be running tons slower, and I suspect its the Antivirus...and its insistence of applying additional firewalls and worm protection. But, I can't seem to get it to release Yahoo! Widgets to run without resorting to its removal. >:-(

Thinking of building another computer.

Some time ago, I had decided that I didn't want to build any more computers from scratch.

There's kind of that painful process of getting various odds and ends to work nicely in one unit.

Though a combination of my current living situation and the fact that I'm about to upgrade my main desktop computer from 1GB to 2GB, and will end up with 1GB of perfectly good memory. And, I've been in need of upgrading or adding another computer to my setup. Though it'll be another Windows box. Which I'm not totally thrilled about, but the overworked P-III 933MHz machine that is maxed at 512MB (i815 limitation)....is starting to hinder things.

Its just a matter of working the timing though. But, while researching what I bits I might accumulate to make this happen....occurs to me that there are other upgrades I've been meaning to make to my main desktop. Namely upgrade the main drive from the original 120GB to a 500GB drive. The 120GB could go in the new box, or I might choose to get something bigger. Haven't decided.

Though other big drives are on the horizon....and some might happen before I actually get around to this (or that?) upgrade.

Not sure when the Mac's are going to get acquired now.....

Good-bye Avira AntiVir (Free-AV), hello Norton?

The other day, I woke up to evidence that AntiVir 7.5 had done its annoying update....and it had an extra popup. It was reporting that one of my main spyware tools was now a trojan horse, and it didn't give me much in the way of choices. Ignore was a choice, but it kept popping the dialog back up every few seconds. And, I wasn't going to select any of the other options.

So, I removed AntiVir. Decided that maybe I would go back to a paid version of Symantec Antivirus.

I used run it, but my subscription lapsed...and I was unemployed for an extended spell. And, then later I have 'free' use of the corporate version through work. Though work changed to Trend Micro....and Trend messed up all kinds of stuff, like removing my webcam software...by classifying it as spyware. And, it didn't give me any options on what to do with it...removing it was the only thing it would allow me to do, and did so automatically.

So, I had set out trying different free-AntiVirus packages.

Now, I'm running a trial version of Symantec.
