Which NetBook for me?

A while back I mentioned that I was thinking of getting the Gigabyte M912 (Linux) as my first NetBook. This was shelved by the fact that they won't be releasing it in the US.

That doesn't necessarily mean I couldn't get one, if I really wanted it. Like I could order it via Dynamism. But, as more information on it comes out, like the fact that there isn't going to be a Linux version and other details revealed in is becoming less and less desirable.

Plus there's the whole rethinking of what do I really want to get out of a NetBook.

Now my current thinking is the ASUS EEE PC 1000. Perhaps a little big as far as NetBooks go, but 40G of SSD space and the huge battery life.

OTOH, I'm also thinking that there might be two netbooks in my future. Especially with the death of my laptop. The ASUS EEE PC 1000, being the netbook that might be the on the go replacement of my old laptop....and another smaller netbook for couch surfing.

Hmmm.... :??:

Zektor HDVI5 input selection resolution.

One of the things I had grumbled about was now having to switch inputs on my Zektor HDVI5 more often than usual.

Namely, going between my two TiVo HD's. The other two devices, my DVD player and the Cox HD DVR, were getting little use. Like, I'm only watching on DVD a weekend...if that. And, right now I check the Cox HD DVR now and then to remove stuff it has recorded, because it is duplicating stuff that I'm now getting on my TiVo (one of the them anyways). I originally scheduled the shows because I wasn't able to get them via Cablecards, but Cox has since made all the HD channels here available that way.

I could remove the scheduling I suppose, but that's more time on the box than I want. Perhaps sometime before the start of the fall season, I'll sit down and figure out the distribution of what I record where. Kind of like the spread of channels over the many ReplayTVs I've been using.

Should be interesting to see what my ReplayTV usage becomes in the fall.

Anyways...back to what input switching problem, it dawned on that I can reprogram the switcher to select the input based on a different remote. Though I didn't want to change all the buttons, and there didn't seem to be a way to cycle through I hadn't looked much further.

It then occurred me that I could temporarily juggle remotes to program so just input 1 and input 2 are triggered by some other IR code, that corresponds to the respective TiVo HD's. Better yet, while checking the manual...I can only change the IR codes that I want.

So, I mapped the TiVo button of #1 to input 1, and the TiVo button of #2 to input 2. Sure, the switcher is going to reselect the input every time I hit the TiVo button. But, it seemed a safe button that would switch inputs without disrupting things on that TiVo.

Especially, since it is preference to hit the TiVo button for the input I'm going to before I switch to the input. That way I won't get blasted by whatever Live TV that the TiVo might be playing.

At some later date, I'll probably think of what button on the other devices (Cox HD DVR and Momitsu V880N DVD player) to be the input selection for that. But, back to my TiVo viewing.

Another pair of Cox Cablecards

I have scheduled the installation of a[nother] pair of Cox Cablecards, for my 'new' TiVo HD DVR.

I don't remember what I paid for installation last time, but it sounded much higher this time around. I may strongly consider the retirement of the Cox HD equipment next year. U-(

Anyways...I scheduled it for August 4th, since this is my next planned stay at home for deliveries day. Though nothing else has been ordered with this date, yet. But, I have stuff sitting in my cart....

'New' TiVo HD is here

The 'New' TiVo HD arrived today. It was supposed to come yesterday, but the UPS delivery didn't happen until 15 minutes after I had given up waiting for it to show up.

This time I booked the morning off, and waited those extra 15 minutes. Perhaps its easier to force attempt #2, though the I didn't really know how long it would take from ordering the TiVo to when I would get it with free shipping...and didn't feel the rush....

The total delivery was the Refurbished TiVo HD, and the GloRemote. And a separate order of the My DVR Expander.

After a quick inspection, I set it aside and headed off to work.

TiVo HD DVR + Expander & Remote purchased

I remembered that I was to go back and try ordering the TiVo HD DVR again....

So, I did. This time it went through like a snap. And, soon afterwards I got confirmation from both my credit card and TiVo of the transaction.

From TiVo, I ordered a refurbished TiVo HD DVR....just going month to month on service for it. To go with it, I got the glo Remote for it. Just something that I've been thinking of getting for a while. Already have my current TiVo prepped to be unit #1. No plans that I know of for there to be more than 2 TiVos.

After the completion of that...I went ahead and jumped in an order from for another My DVR Expander. So that this would will be ready to upgrade as soon as I get it.

The TiVo is just coming by free ground shipping, so it might be next week before I get it. But, the My DVR Expander is coming by Amazon I should have that in Wednesday.

Now off to prep other parts of home for its arrival. :lalala:

Getting another TiVo HD (or am I?)

Yesterday, I mourned the death of one of my ReplayTVs. I accepted it fairly quickly, since I use them less and less (due to more and more stuff on HD and having a TiVo HD).

So I've set about removing it from my setup (can't seem to get to ReplayTV to remove its subscription...guess I'll try again or call on Monday).

After mulling things over....I decided that I would get a second TiVo HD.

I went to and ordered a refurbished TiVo HD with month-to-month service, threw in a glo Remote...and checked out.

But, it timed out before giving me an order confirmation. My cart is empty, but no email of the order either. So, did it complete or not? :??:

I tried calling the sales number...but the call won't go through.

A ReplayTV is dead. Long live ReplayTV

Sometime early this morning, one of my ReplayTV's failed. Looks like the harddrive big the dust. :..(

Guess if it doesn't start working on its own soon, I'll just see about unsubscribing it. I still have my other 6 ReplayTVs...and I hardly use any of them now since I'm more in HD.

What I might do now, is see about buying another TiVo HD :>>

Off to figure out what I've lost and see if I want to bother getting those shows back.... :|

Gigabyte M912 - Not for sale in the US

Gigabyte FAIL! :##

After a quick review of features and such, I had decided this would be my next laptop (and first netbook).

But, then this....

Now I have to go back to researching what to get ... hopefully something will materialize of suitable specifications and such before school starts in the 'fall'.

US-CERT: Multiple DNS implementations vulnerable to cache poisoning

This has been a hot topic lately....which I first became aware of when an urgent ticket was assigned to me on Tuesday to upgrade all the campus DNS servers to a 'safe' version of bind.

During the winter break I had updated the campus caching DNS servers to 9.4.2, but the primary/secondary DNS servers were left running 9.3.4.

The 'safe' versions were 9.3.5-P1, 9.4.2-P1 or 9.5.0-P1.

The main campus caching servers had been running they were more pressing to upgrade to 9.4.2. During the break, the data center caching DNS server died...which created a good time to build the latest 9.4.2 version and later I upgraded (and make consistent) all the caching servers to this version.

In response to the urgent ticket, I got all the caching servers to 9.4.2-P1. And, this afternoon I got the primary and secondary DNS servers upgraded to match. I also discovered that the secondary DNS server had inadvertently been acting as a caching server to the whole world. After I turned it off, there were lots of log messages of comcast addresses being denied cache queries....and it was for a variety of well known sites, including youtube, paypal, google. At first it was Michigan comcast, but later I saw numerous other states, such as FL, GA, CO....

Meanwhile...I had started looking at getting the new bind package onto my Linux servers. These servers are well past EOL. So, I knew I was on my own to get things work.

Anyways....I was able to get bind-9.4.2-P1 to build and eventually run on both my RedHat 7.3 server and my SuSE 9.3 server.

Guess I need to update my ubuntu (8.04 server) from its desktop....

Now instead of subjecting some poor random forum to a long rambling thought, I will try to consolidate those things into this blog where they can be more easily ignored profess to be collected thoughts from my mind.
