Night 2 with the CPAP

Tried a different cushion. Didn't like it....makes different contact with my face that bothered me. RT has suggested the medium nasal pillow might be the right size for me (rather than the large that was prescribed). Think I'll try that one tonight.

Also my head was wet this morning....apparently I was sweating a bit...and the mask/pillow arrangement kept things damp.

Still rough adjusting to the pressure when I first put it on, but when I wake it just feels natural. How I sleep has changed. Though right now instead of getting up half a dozen times through the night to use the bathroom...I do all those trips during the first hour of getting into bed, but I sleep through the night. And, now no more dreaming.....

I picked up the humidifier this morning. Not sure if I can find distilled water to use in it for the first couple of nights.

Meanwhile, I had left the Select Comfort pump unplugged all day...and after I plugged it back in last night, it eventually came to life and I was able to get more air into my mattress.

First night with CPAP

Well, I survived. I got home late, I then called my mom and talked for a while, and then I finally started getting ready for bed.

There was a struggle trying to get comfortable and putting on the mask and such in the dark. And, it seemed like I was getting up to use the bathroom more in the first hour than I had done before. Though there have been nights before where I seem to be going every 5 minutes for the first part of the night.

Once I felt the mask was on and I had the machine going. On one hand the lack of backlight on the LCD made it hard to see how it was set, but it didn't really matter...because I could feel whether ramp was selected or not. Then it was that the blue lights of the buttons was really bright. Maybe I'll buy a night stand for the other side of the bed, and see if that works.

I soon seemed to figure out how to swallow with the mask on, and not inflate my ears. Hopefully the initial discomfort of the mask will fade once the heated humidifier shows up. It was bothersome with the cold dry air blowing on the edge of my nostrils.

Now that I'm not all wired up, I decided to try sleeping on my stomach. I often start this way (in the winter time) and then roll over to my back for the rest of the night. It was a problem finding a position on the pillow where the mask didn't shift to leak a lot. I found myself holding the mask in position with one hand as I laid this way. Eventually, I gave up and tried to find a comfortable position laying on my back.

During this part I felt the pressure of my Sleep Number bed was off, but I found that control wand to be dark and non-responsive. I tried unplugging it a few times, the pump clicked a few times when plugged back in...but the wand remained dead. >:XX It is the one annoying part of my Select Comfort bed....this time its only like 3 months old, and it hasn't fallen off the bed or anything yet. Wonder what I'm going to do now.

Then somewhere during all this I went to sleep. And, I slept until my alarm went off. It was strange, because I didn't feel like a waking dream....but then I remembered that I had a mask on my face. It didn't seem all that strange breathing wise.

I don't feel any more awake then I normally do. But, I didn't stay in bed snoozing as much as I normally do....though that could be the need to rip the mask off once the alarm switches to the beeping. And, then I didn't feel the desire to switch it back to radio and continue snoozing. Will need to work out how cleaning the mask every morning will best fit into my morning routine now.

Perhaps tonight, I'll try the cradle cushion....

I got a CPAP machine

Okay, I called to make an appointment with my doctor this morning, and he had a time of 9:45....so in I went.

He came in telling me that I had failed my sleep study. Quickly went over the detailed findings from the sleep study, gave me a hand out (after spending sometime discovering that only one printer was now visible from his computer and it was out of toner, and then some time to resolve that). Then, he wrote me a couple of scripts and told me of some of nearby places I could get the DME order filled out.

I went with the one nearest my home (and on the way home from the doctor's office).

They/RT could see me right away. RT handed me the equipment, went through its use and care. They were out of stock of the heated humidifier though, so that should be in in a couple of days...though perhaps later due to the holiday. And, then another person explained billing etc.

They are going to submit a bill of like $2030 for everything (though it might be lower in the end due to whatever the insurance company dictates as write off). But, they explained that my insurance until the end of the year is $5000 for DME, $1000 co-insurance max (of which I still have ~$785 to go)....and that it is 90/10. I'll get a bill for whatever 10% works out to be.

Wonder if I can use next year's FSA towards the co-insurance portion of the purchase? This is my first year trying out FSA, and I already think I should've put more aside.

Have a follow up with my doctor in 3 months, unless I have trouble before then.

I asked to have a copy of the sleep study results....guess I have some reading to do tonight.

Do I really have Obstructive Sleep Apnea?

And, if so....how long have I been suffering?

This latest step in my life started 2 months and 1 day ago. I was having my annual physical the day before I turned the Big 40. I don't recall exactly what led to it, but somewhere during the physical the doctor started asking me questions about my sleep, and coffee consumption (which is down from last year)....though I occasionally resort to other caffeine sources in the afternoon.

The end result, other than the usual blood test (minus cholesterol check, because I had already had one recently since I'm being actively treated for high cholesterol....though I'd be curious what my total cholesterol is...or what my good cholesterol is.) He wanted me to get an Echo-cardiogram, because my heart murmur seems to have gotten more pronounced....though it could just be amplification due to my chest becoming more sunken. And, a sleep study.

The echo-cardiogram was fine.

Meanwhile, I had the sleep study on December 1st. It was a split study, and I know I did doze off during the first part...because I was having my usual, semi-conscious dream... It was starting to get disturbing...when I was woken up to have the CPAP applied, etc.

I don't know when I slept during the second part of things, because when I was woken the next morning...there had been an indeterminate passage of time and no dreams that I could recall.

Boxee: CBS & CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.

Following the replacement of batteries in my SmartUPS 1250VA UPS, my TiVo HD failed to boot properly...and I didn't notice until CSI was more than half over, that it wasn't recording.... >:XX

I thought to myself on how I might recover from this, and decided that Boxee would come to the rescue again.

So, I watched other shows last night and this evening I set out to watch the missed episode (19 Down).

Had some issues with the AppleTV. First the remote wasn't selecting the input on my Zektor DVI5. For some reason the remote changes its code now and then. This the second time this has happened. Then the AppleTV wasn't cooperating. Menu with no text. This has been happening on occasion since the update the 2.3 and the latest of the launcher & boxee.

I had to restart the AppleTV a few times, and I re-updated the software....even though the versions haven't changed.

That was enough to get into Boxee and make my way to watching CSI.

It went pretty good.

Now back to my TiVo HD for regular recordings....starting with Eleventh Hour

SmartUPS 1250VA is dead, long live my SmartUPS 1250VA UPS.

On (late morning) December 7th, there was a power glitch. Half my home theater went dead and there was this continuous beep.

The SmartUPS 1250VA UPS that was protecting that half seemed to have died horribly. Eventually, I was able to get it turn on and self-test by removing the bulk of the load from it. And, then a few minutes later I got the load running off of it again.

But, now the Replace Battery light was firmly on and it was do the replace battery beeping at regular intervals....during the day, in the evening while I'm trying to watch TV, in the middle of the night. :lalala:

I promptly set out to find replacement batteries for it....trying to figure out what source would to get them as fast as possible. First I had to determine what kind of battery to use. I recalled BatteryMart had listed the battery I wanted as "SLA-12V18-X2". Checking again, it seemed like a good price...except then there was the matter of shipping. Was Ground shipping acceptable (no). Was the premium of 3-day/2-day service affordable (not really).

The description said it replaces RBC7.

So, I went to Amazon.com to see if they had RBC7 available from them, and therefor available to be under Amazon Prime.

They did. And, that price was equivalent buying just the batteries....

ETA December 10th, 2008.

Well, unfortunately FedEx takes its time on showing up to make deliveries (though I guess UPS has been really late lately as well). So, I gave up waiting, because I had a meeting in the afternoon (2pm)....they showed up about 3pm. And, they wouldn't leave it without a signature. It came by 2 day service, instead of ground (where I had a signature release on file with them). So there was a door tag waiting for me, and I signed it so that I would get it today.

I did wait a little bit this morning, but they didn't show up in the time before my dentist appointment or the bit of time I lingered at home after my dentist appointment. They didn't actually show again until well after 2pm. I knew they had left the box on my door step. But, I had a meeting after work to go to. Though its a heavy box, and there hasn't been any problem in the past with stuff left on my door step for short periods.
