Yaesu FT8000R Design Failure

Anyways...I was trying to figure out if the thing would work....figured the memory backup battery would be long dead. Tried to figure out from the manual where it was. Somewhere behind the display, and not user accessible, requires a Yaesu authorized tech.

Well, I was pretty sure I had opened it up once before (pretty sure I had done the wide RX/TX mod)....so I went to opening it up again.

But, when I finally got to the battery...it turns out that its soldered directly into place. At first I thought maybe I could find my soldering iron...but as I went to open it to get clear access to the pads, something came flying out and disappeared. I'm pretty sure its just the retaining clip for one of the knobs.

But, why couldn't they have made it so the battery could be easily replaced.....I can accept the major disassembly to get to it. But, using a tabbed cell, soldered into place.

Well, I don't know where I'm going to find a tabbed lithium cell before the weekend to even try it. Of course, I'm not sure I'm going to have the other things to bother for the weekend (like a powersupply or antenna). I have an antenna coming, since I figure it'll be useful...if it shows up on Saturday, maybe I'll see if that makes enough improvement on my HT. But, then I'll need to find a BNC to PL259 adapter.

I'm eyeballing some possible powersupplies. But, if it comes to it...I suppose I could do more digging around....because somewhere down deep should be the 40lb linear power supply. If memory serves it is also a 40A continuous power supply (60A Intermittent) ... actually according to the web, it's a 48A continuous...but I'm right on the 60A part.

I just remember it was a pain lugging it a mile or so from the post office. I had gotten it pre-car.

Not sure if I'll get another mobile radio....right now I'm working up to getting onto HF, so what I might do is get an HF rig that'll do VHF and UHF as well....

I might still look at seeing if the old Denpa MZ-22 works, even if I don't have a DTMF mike for it or the capability to do tone.

Now instead of subjecting some poor random forum to a long rambling thought, I will try to consolidate those things into this blog where they can be more easily ignored profess to be collected thoughts from my mind.
