Summer Storm & UPS Shuffle and more...

After having made supper, I settled down in front of my TV to see what I could do. Cable was still out, and the TiVo's were complaining about no signal. Additional, my TiVo Premiere was complaining of no network connectivity....no Discovery Bar. I changed from DHCP to static, and switched to using DSL.

And, watched some content that had been recorded yesterday. 8pm rolled around...still no cable...missing Eureka. Saw on IRC that people said they had Cox back...but I still didn't, so I wondered if there had been local storm damage....walked around outside for a bit, everything seemed okay. Went online to see if had any status of outage...guess they aren't like Westar Energy (electric company), couldn't report outage online either. So, I decided that I would call and make sure they knew I had no service....in case it was an overhead cable snagged by a tree that knocked just me out, and not a larger area outage. Going through the automated system, I eventually got to the section where it finally told me that there is an outage affecting my area. That's all I needed to know, so I hung up.

Sadly, 10pm rolled around...no Cox, so no Eureka. Guess I'll have to resort to Amazon VOD....

This morning, Cox was back up...at least the Internet was...so I went on with things. Though as I wrote this, it occurred to me that I didn't confirm that TV was working....it is. I saw that dyndns updated at 5:45am, so that's when broadband started working again. Cacti shows signal before that, but it wasn't usable signal at first. Guess I could show you that ;D

In chatting on IRC, I decided that the fact that cacti graph of weather was void due to no Cox, I should change that to use DSL. So I figured out the PHP code change necessary to make that work (create socket context to bind to IP that goes to DSL). Then checking my email, I saw ddclient complaining for some time about not being able to update. I went to dyndns.com to check, and saw that they had both updated finally at 5:45am.

Hmmm, wonder if there's a way to make the DSL update not dependent on Cox. Guess I'll have to route it through my squid proxy. Also noticed that 'lhaven' wasn't able to do BOINC updates during the Cox outage, guess when I reinstalled the box...I didn't add the changes necessary to make it go through my squid proxy (and go out by DSL).

So, now to be lazy and watch more stuff on my TiVo's....

Hmmm, there's a water restriction.
