LHAVEN is dead, long live LHAVEN?

Anyways...since replacing the drive didn't resolve the drive issues it was complaining about....I suspect the onboard IDE controller, thought about plugging in an IDE card and disabling the on board....but couldn't locate the card from my stash. And, wasn't going to buy one this time around...

...I started plans on what will become the new LHAVEN. When I first thought LHAVEN was lost following the Icepocalyse, I impulsively bought the GT5636E that has become Orac. And, it turned out to be a decent enough system that has expanded to do all sorts of stuff, though not everything that I would ultimately want, had I started from scratch. And, I did want to play around with some of those technologies in the succession....

So I was leaning towards building completely from scratch, or acquiring some kind of starter bundle. But, when LHAVEN died...my first instinct was to buy another system like now I had originally tried to replace it after the Icepocalyse.

With the passage of time though, and the fact that all my services are primarily running on 'box' now (with 'Orac' having secondary role for some things)....which pretty much made it possible to finally stop it being RedHat 7.3 and move up to Ubuntu 10.04LTS, and the role of 'media center' has also moved to 'Orac', HSTi Wireless Media Stick and Roku XDS...I've not been significantly impacted.

Plus 'Orac' is kind of overworked, so I want something better than that to be successor to LHAVEN. And, I think I've reached the limit of storage expansion (in terms of connnecting drives to it.....I'm sure someday I'll pull smaller drives off of it and put 3TB or bigger in...but I think I want more arrays and to still play around with dangerous things like native ZFS. Also someday I want to get back into some development work....so who knows....when LHAVEN will return. Except that it will. B-)

Now to stop putting off the chores I wanted to tackle this long weekend....

Now instead of subjecting some poor random forum to a long rambling thought, I will try to consolidate those things into this blog where they can be more easily ignored profess to be collected thoughts from my mind.
