SA8300HD DVR Let Down

Well, last night my SA8300HD DVR let me down. :..(

Whenever possible, I've been double recording....especially the shows that I really do want to watch in HD.

Double recording in that inaddition to have the SA8300HD DVR record the show, I also recorded the downconverted HD from OTA HDTV onto a ReplayTV. Though ABC and FOX had priority for getting scheduled into my ReplayTV, because these aren't available by cable (darn Sinclair Broadcast, forcing the public to use other means to get those shows if they get missed....now I'd get a Video iPod if it did 16:9....)

Well, last night there were shows on FOX/ABC that I couldn't do double recording....well, normally there isn't, but there was a movie on FOX last night....so I opted to record that instead of my regular shows.

The SA8300HD DVR decided to lock up and reboot during the recording of a couple of shows last night....so now I don't have these shows from HD, even though the shows were from CBS and NBC....I could probably have rationalized watching what it had recorded if the crash had been at or near the start or perhaps in the middle. But the it lopped of the ends of the shows. It may as well not have recorded it at all if it was going to do that to me.

The Mondo 'Box' Recovery

Link: http://www.mikenjane.net/~mike/

Well, looks like 3rd time is the charm.

While, this one gave a lot of spew that made me worry that it also wasn't going to work. It is currently running a 'compare', which is a good sign. The previous two times, "mondorestore" wouldn't run at all.

'Box' Recovery Update

Well, the restore completed and everything seemed to be running fine.

As my final recovery operation, I wanted to make a working mondorestore CD set for this machine.

Turns out the version I had installed are the mondo/mindi RPMs from the SuSE 9.3 install CD. Which others have noted as not working, but no updates from Novell for them.

So, I went to the mondorescue site, and then remembered that the latest version of SuSE that there is an RPM for is SuSE 9.1. Which I was pretty sure didn't work, but I installed the latest stable version and tried it anyways.

'Box' Recovery in Progress

I managed to get 'box' up sufficient to run a backup....at least I thought I was running a backup :lalala:

There were some files lost during the repair of the filesystem, but none of them seemed critical for what I use the machine for....well, at least to the extent of the important uses of the machine (most of the damage affected its ability to do X and KDE).

At 11pm last night, the backup still had about 2 hours to go...so I went to bed :zz:

Maybe it is Mondays that are conspiring against me :..(

Because....almost exactly a week after the last harddrive died....another harddrive has failed.

This time the harddrive in my Linux internal router. >:XX

Immediate impact is that IVS transfers for ReplayTVs is halted....and gradually other parts of my home network will collapse around it.

The machine is a really old PC that I scrounged together...it was running off of a 40GB harddrive from an old ReplayTV.....not sure how I'll resurrect it. Hopefully I can get the old drive up enough to back it up, and then see about what to restore to. Probably one of the other old 40GB drives from my ReplayTVs.

broadband = News = More on WRT54GS Success (Now with 70% more failure!) - Users note new version not open-source, less powerful, and buggy

Link: http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/69522

After reading this article on Broadbandreports.com, I was started to worry that maybe I had put off buying a(nother) WRT54GS.

The intent was to get one to play with Talisman (without risking my working Alchemey setup). Though there is also the idea of having a backup or complicating my network by having two broadband connections.

Today, I was intending to do some shopping of a specific nature....along the way I stopped off at Best Buy and saw that they only have the new CGN6 version (v4)....I had heard wasn't as good as my current v1.1 router (less memory). BestBuy did have a $30 rebate offer...which would've made it a good deal if they had older units. As I continued my trek to the intended store, I decided to pop into OfficeMax to see what they had.

Well, OfficeMax also only has CGN6 routers. So, I continued on to the intended store and looked at the item I was thinking of buying.

"Number 6" is alive :!:

Well, I popped home for lunch, not feeling like make the hike in the cold to the Subway...and not really sure what I what kind of Subway sandwich I was in the mood for today.

Shortly after arriving home, there was a knock. It's UPS with my new winter gear.

After quickly trying it on and liking it. :>>

I moved to wondering what else I might do....I keep looking at "Number 6", so I decide why not. |-|

I'm going to do the upgrade of it now and it'll be all ready for tonight's programming, etc.

And, maybe I'll do something else this weekend....like go out U-(

Burr! It's Cold...

...another cold day in central Ohio. Even colder than yesterday.

And, silly me....I kept putting off getting a new winter jacket for this season.

At first I was thinking that I should get one for my Alaskan Cruise back in June. But, decided to wing it without. There were a couple of days where it would've been nice to have had, but I survived.

Then being more conservative on cash since getting laid off back in July, and not knowing how much future use I'll have for one. I've been focused on finding work closer to family/relatives (where closer could just mean that I'll have access to a non-stop flight to get to my parents)....which could potentially mean living in an area that doesn't experience winter like they do here, let along winter like in Canada.

Either way, what I would get would not cope with the extremes of winter in Canada. But, its just a one week trip each year....except there won't be one this year, because of the family reunion the week before hand....where I'll be in San Diego/Mexico....

Well, at first I was going to order the jacket at the end of October. But, it was still nice out and other unexpected expenses crept in, so pushed it to be mid-month November. Unfortunately the cold weather hit the same day that I mid-month came around.

The interesting things you see in blog stats

As part of the current version of this blog site software, I can examine some of the reasons people land on this site.

Though due to rampant referral spamming, there's a lot less than original and the future releases of the software will have even less. And, I do plan to update someday, because I've made my own customizations to the software...an upgrade isn't that easy. Plus part of me is waiting for the first point release of the latest new version..... ;D

Anyways....one thing I can see is the referring searches that bring people to this blog. Not some much that it is interesting that people are finding and coming to my site when they are looking for something, but sometimes the keywords they use are interesting.

Today, I noticed that somebody had come to the site by doing a search for the keywords "JT fired 97.1" or something like that. I had mentioned a time or two that I used to listen extensively to 97.1...but this gradually ended when JT took over the morning.....so much for 'more music', because all I heard in the mornings was JT talking...and I don't like the stuff he spews. I seemed to recall that 97.1 was also supposed to be a family friend radio station....guess they exclude what JT says/said from that claim.

But, if it is true that he's gone....would that be enough to make me switch back :??:

Now instead of subjecting some poor random forum to a long rambling thought, I will try to consolidate those things into this blog where they can be more easily ignored profess to be collected thoughts from my mind.
