Beep, Beep, Beep!

I think the next time I get into it, I'm going to have to investigate reworking my UPS strategy.

Last night just before 1am, the power went out.

It sure was noisy. The worst was the Belkin UPS, the beeper on that UPS is of much higher tone so even though it was all the way at the other end of the apartment...it made its presence known.

Power didn't return until a little after 4am, so all the UPSs had drained. And, not everything recovers nicely after a power loss.

UPN53 bites the dust

After watching a large number of bad recordings of stuff from NBC-HD, I decided, last night, that I really should check the aim of my antennas.

After going through the channels and tweaking the antenna around trying to see if I can find a sweet spot that can receive all the stations, which exist in 3 different directions from my QTH.

Basically, I found a spot where I could get everything except PBS...or UPN. PBS is a problem because it is much further off from the other two directions, while UPN is much further away than the other stations.

Last night, I opted to leave out PBS, because I so rarely record anything from it.

This morning I changed my mind, as I found the desire to record something from PBS.

I decided that it was time to remove UPN from my OTA HDTV recordings. Of course, it is WWHO/UPN53's fault. For unknown reasons, they have decided to not air anything in HD this season....at first I thought because they were under new UPN slanted ownership that they were refusing to air WB programming in HD, but I haven't seen them air any UPN programming in HD either. Namely the many shows which I enjoyed last year in HD from them...was there anything new that I was trying to follow this season?

So, since they aren't transmitting HD, there's no reason to waste my time recording the OTA DTV signal. Sure it is a bit clearer than analog SD by cable. But, I can record cable source from any of my ReplayTVs. But, only two of them can record from OTA HDTV...and I'd rather get content that is in HD.

Upgraded C Drive in Gumby

Link: http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/migrateeasy/

Try number 2 of upgrading the C drive in my WiRNS/DVArchive server known as Gumby seems to have gone a lot smoother.

This time I reran Acronis Migrate Easy taking the old 80GB (5400RPM) drive to the 120GB (7200RPM) drive that I pulled from my Linux server.

Of course, I expected things to go better since 120GB is under the 137GB BIOS limitation of the box and other than running into this problem last time, Migrate Easy went smoothly last time.

There'll probably be another drive upgrade or two for this box. Though not sure if it'll be this year or next job. |-|

hdb is here

Actually, it arrived during lunch...and apparently just moments before I got home, though no notice was left on my door and I didn't see the UPS truck. But, I checked online before going back to work, and saw that I should go pick it up from the lease office.

I filled out the rebate, but didn't send it off.

Then I went back to work.

The new hdb should arrive today

UPS tracking finally gives an estimated delivery date, and that date is today.

Good thing, too. hdc is full already.

Ordered another harddrive....

Link: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1487962

It is time to upgrade hdb in my Linux server (lhaven).

That should take care of all the upgrades I plan to do this box.

When done:

hda is a 250GB 7200RPM 8MB Maxtor 7Y250P0
hdb is a 300GB 7200RPM 16MB Maxtor 6B300R0(?)
hdc is a 300GB 7200RPM 8MB Seagate ST3300831A
hdd is a CDROM drive

hdc is online

When I peeked at my computer over lunch, I knew it was getting close and would likely finish the badblock scan before I got home.

And, I was right.

Now, remotely, I'm moving some files over to it and going to reboot my Linux server....so it samba can make the share reappear.

Oh yeah...no bad blocks detected.

The hdc badblock scan

is still running. It is past the half way point....so maybe it'll be finished sometime this evening.... )-o

I remember it taking days when I did the 250GB, with a destructive badblock scan....so I figured non-destructive would be faster (since it does fewer passes)....but it is still taking longer than I had expected....

Wonder if it'll be done before or after this evening's phone interview....

New hdc

Well, by the time I got home for lunch UPS has already made a delivery attempt. So, I made a side trip to the lease office on the way back to work to fetch the drive.

Later when I got home after work...I set about to install the drive in place of the failed (remanufactured) Maxtor 6Y250P0, that I had gotten in exchange for one that failed under warranty....

I partitioned it up....having not previousily noted that it was only using 2GB out of the 4GB swap partition I had created, I again created a 4GB partition and the rest as the filesystem. Oh well, I guess what's 2GB these days....

I'm going with a slow format with a read-write badblock scan. Just to prove to myself that the drive is safe, before I commit some important files to it. At the rate things are going...it'll be tomorrow before I can mount it. :zz:

Palm TX handheld

Link: http://www.palm.com/us/products/handhelds/tx/?creativeID=HmPg_BB|tx_buynow_20051011

Darn...looks like Palm finally did it.

For the longest time (ever), I've been making use of just a Palm Tungsten T. Because there hasn't been a compeling enough reason to leap to other models.

Namely, the lack of compeling new features to satisfy my desires. And, features that I actually want or will use.

Looks like the TX will finally be that model. WiFi is pretty much the only thing I'm missing in my Tungsten T. Though more memory would also be helpful. There is also a price factor, especially if upgrading will require me to buy all new accessories....

But, this looks like the model that'll get me to make the plunge.
