Upcoming projects

Well, today I found a box waiting for me by the front door.

Inaddition to a Bluetooth headset, that I want to bound to my BB7100t. I had thrown in a few other items in the order.

A SATA controller. Wonder if it'll work in my Linux server, and allow me to reuse the extra SATA drive I have. Though I guess I have to move up the plan to offload essential services from that Linux server to the other Linux server that I've been building.

A couple of USB powered notebook coolers. To add cooling to the OTA HDTV STBs in my rack. They'll be powered off of the USB ports on the respective ReplayTVs. Since the boxes will get moved, I'll need to readjust the antennas....I think at the same time I look to see if combining and splitting will help my situation.

The situation is that if I aim the antenna a certain way, I can get ABC, but lose everything else. And aimed another way...I can mostly get everything....except ABC. Though sometimes FOX complicates things, likely due when they mess around with their power level. If I am right at FOX, I lose UPN which is far away... ABC,FOX,NBC,CBS,PBS are about 9-12 miles away from me...but UPN is 33 miles away. Actually, ABC and FOX are the closest two stations to me....

Anyways....I guess we'll find out when I mess around with things on the weekend.

Yet Another Poopli Updater Tweak (YAPUT?)

While looking to procrastinate going outside some more this weekend, I decided that it was time to do something about the annoying '?' in show names/titles on Poopli.

So, I delved into the updater code again...and added Replace("’","'") in a few select spots.

The updater containing this change is HERE

Jury Summons Cancelled

Today, I found a letter in the mail officially canceling the summons for Jury Duty.

Apparently the matter for which I was being summoned for has been resolved.

In a way, I'm kind of sad.... :(

Now it is faster....

...than parts of my home network.

Namely the 802.11b WLAN....which tops out around 3.4MBps....

Maybe it is time for a new laptop (one with built in 802.11g or better) and upgrade my WLAN accordingly. Not sure if this is the time to move the network bridge to 802.11a or go to two g nets.

Woohoo ... faster downloads

Got a letter that RoadRunner speeds in my area have been upgraded. So I rebooted the modem to see...and does get close to 5MBps/512kbps....up from about 3MBps/512kbps.

Though the Poopli freak that I really isn't that much of a boost. Though I still intend to ditch the landline for VoIP at some point this year.

Upgrade my BB7100t to 4.0

Well, after hearing that 4.0 was out for the BB7100t...I decided to try doing the update. Hoping that it would allow certain apps to work without BES...alas, no such luck.

What I did get instead was a near death experience.

At the reboot step in the update....507 error. :..(

And, my PC would no longer detect the 7100t. So, I couldn't rerun the
application loader to try again. After much panic, I rebooted both the 7100t
and my computer...and eventually, it detected it that I could load
4.0 onto it. Though everything else seemed to be lost. But, I took a chance
and restored a backup...and everything seemed to come back. Except for the
service books and the IM client. But, followed the steps in the upgrade
document to get those back. I had a Feedburner beta that I had installed
online which was also missing, but I wasn't using I won't really miss
it except the minor impact it makes to my menus.

At least the message about 'error processing policy file', and the red X,
everytime Desktop Manager starts...until I click gone.

Serial Number Gripe

There ought to be a law....

...that if you need to pull up the serial number for something, that the serial number should be easily accessible without having to contort or disassemble, because it is hidden on the back on the device in difficult to read position and text.

Like fairly easy to retrieve the serial numbers for my ReplayTVs....or my Samsung DLP (its on the side).

sarah. word.: Sarah's Random Question Game

Let's all get to know each other better. Below is a list of random questions from yours truly (I've also graciously answered myself). Please copy and paste the questions into your comment post, but erase my answers and replace them with yours. We'll all be BFF in no time.
This is going to be SO fun!

  1. When you were born, how much did you weigh?

Don't know. But, I tried to be early...but the doctors made me stay inside a little longer :D
  2. What's your sugar poison?

    Dark Chocolate.
  3. If you had to choose between meat and cheese for the rest of your life, which would you choose? Then be specific.

Meat. I haven't met a meat I didn't like yet. Some of my favourites include Peking Duck, Sashmi (with lots of Wasabi ;) ), a nice big porterhouse....
  4. What, in your opinion, is the worst song ever?

I refuse to answer on the grounds that I may incriminate myself or get my butt kicked....for admitting that I listened to it.
  5. Who was your very favorite teacher growing up, and why?

I'm going to say Mr. Kimmel. Showed me that there was nothing wrong with being an individual and not conforming to stereotypes, etc. Perhaps one of these days the rest of the world (and my parents) will catch up.
  6. What personal activity, when performed in public, bothers you the most?

I agree nail clipping at work is certain bothersome. Though I once worked for a manager that did it.
  7. Ok, so there's a $50 bill lying on the ground. You pick it up. Dumbfounded by your incredible luck, what do you selfishly purchase?

Something electronic or computer related, probably found at my nearby Best Buy store.
  8. Do you have a reoccuring nightmare? If so, explain.

    There is a tie.
    First, I also have the

I'm in college, and suddenly realize I've forgotten to go to an entire semester of math. I have to pass the class in order to graduate, but now I'm totally screwed on finals because you can't bullshit math. I panic and wonder how I could have been so careless.

Except instead of math, it is some Engineering course. OTOH, I did actually face writing two finals in my final year where I hadn't gone to a single class and needed a pass in both to graduate. They were both multiple-guess finals, so I did get D's in both classes....."D for Degree" :P

And, it has been almost 15 years since I was in University.

Second, is the recurring...I'm driving and the brakes don't work. I don't think I'll ever get over the car accident I had on November 4th, 1997. At least they eventually let me walk out of the hospital, despite the worry that I had done something at C4-C5....

  9. Name one place on Earth you've never been, but vow to visit at least once.

    There's too many to list....

My list includes Panama Canal, Alaska, Hawaii, Australlia, Japan.

Since my employer has eliminated carry over of vacation days....this is forcing me to consider realizing this. This June I'll be seeing Alaska. Don't know what is next on my list yet..... Will have to see if there is such as thing as cruised-out.

  10. You notice that question #9 wasn't really a question. You feel smart for catching such a small detail. What else can you do really well that reminds you how smart you are?

Fixing software bugs in other people's code ;D

1 ... 121 122 123 124 126 128 129 130 131 ... 141

Now instead of subjecting some poor random forum to a long rambling thought, I will try to consolidate those things into this blog where they can be more easily ignored profess to be collected thoughts from my mind.
