Drive upgrading....

Well, I've been busy slowly upgrading my ReplayTVs....it is a bit of a hitch that I originally only planned to upgrade on RTV per month until I did them all...and that I been doing one about every other week.

Also interesting looking at my recent order history from ZipZoomFly.com

With the exception of the 250GB Serial ATA drive...all of those purchases were ReplayTV related. The 120GB drive, the Athlon CPU and memory went to upgrading one of my DVArchive servers. Actually the 250GB SATA drive also contributed....it displaced a 120GB drive that went onto my other DVArchive server.

I can't believe it....

I went from a TV with just a single video input....to the HLN4365W1 which has lots of inputs....and yet I've run out.....

I knew only having one DVI input was going to be a problem....but I figured I'd get to that bridge when I get the HD941.

In the meantime I'm using Component video....and then I'm using a Component video input for my ReplayTV (use IHVS to get the shows on the other ReplayTV output of the one that I have set to component out, using component eliminates one of the delay factors and makes the lipsync problem tolerable.....). And, another component video input for my ATSC HDTV Tuner.

So, all 3 inputs are in use.

And, now I'm planning to get HDTV from my cable company....but their current box doesn't support DVI....just component video. I guess I could bump the ATSC Tuner once I make the switch....since I won't be using it to watch live HD once I get the service from Time Warner....just for sending the downconverted video to a ReplayTV.

I have plenty of A/V switchers so I'm only using one of the 3 S-Video inputs.

Just got an HLN4365W1....

Well, yesterday it arrived....a Samsung HLN4365W1....I had wondered if I needed to specify that I wanted the W1, but I guess the store's display model is older than when the W1's came out. Interesting that it wasn't on sale yesterday (though it seemed they were offering a different discounting....which doesn't apply to me, because I don't like store credit cards). But, they did have a one-day sale before the weekend...where it was $150 off. Perhaps that's the trick. I did check one other store, and they also didn't have it on sale yesterday....I only looked because I was there buying cables.

Anyways...one day of experience with it so far....and already got some questions / gripes about it.

Though it is a big improvement from my old 21" CRT.... ;)

First question is where can I find Discrete codes for selecting inputs...I was under the impression that they existed. I looked around online...but only found codes for what were described as HLN617W or HLN467W codes...but most of the codes didn't work. Discrete on and off worked....but the discrete input selection codes don't seem to work.

BTW, I have the Pronto TSU2000. I tried both merging other people's CCF files and entering the discrete IR codes....

The other problem is that perhaps I should've read the discussions on the audio sync problem....because it is really bad...especially since I can see much more.

I'm not positive...but it seems to be more of a problem with S-Video input than Component or DVI inputs....but that is apples and oranges. Because my PVRs are S-Video sources. And, it is a Samsung SIR-T351 that I tried as component or DVI.

Don't know if I switched my ReplayTV to output Component if that would help....the problem is then I'd have to get A/V switchers that can handle component....and there's 6...so that's not an upgrade I had planned on.

Though I also don't know if the ReplayTV had a small sync problem that is only made noticeable because I have a bigger screen. This sync is like out by a few frames versus the more serious out by several seconds that sometimes crops up.

I can't compare with my old TV, because it is gone.....it has been a pretty rough few days waiting for the new TV to arrive....made worse yesterday, because I had one less place on the Internet to keep myself occupied

Though I'm thinking that maybe being a one TV household isn't such a good idea give the newness of the technology (again).

Years and years ago...I had a tube filled console TV....It seemed that Sears was there every other week fixing it....they eventually replaced it with one that worked better....which is a factor in why I got the DLP from Sears with the EW.

Though back then I wanted considerably less TV....so having it not work wasn't the end of the my world...... 88|

Samsung SIR-T351 & ReplayTV

Well, I got it working....

Selected Satellite box....Samsung/Other -> 7110 and fine tuned (changed minimum number of digits to enter to 2...for what I tried it tuned fastest this way).

First time I selected DirectTV as my lineup, and deleted all the non-local channels. Only problem is it bumped my standard cable line up by add 1000 to the digits. For such a small number of local OTA channels...that is kind of annoying.

So, I used WiRNS to pipe in a smaller lineup....this put the OTA HD channels after the standard cable line up....a side effect is that it only added 100 to the numbers. Standard cable ranges on channels 2-71.

Only problem is I'm not happy with the results....

The HD stations send 16:9 source all the time....just black borders on the side when the show is 4:3. The box on SD letterboxes the 16:9 source...by default....which puts borders top and bottom.

So when the show is 4:3 is makes for a really small picture with borders on all four sides. I could choose zoom, which but then I'll lose the sides of realy 16:9 shows.

Probably will be less of an issue once my 43" TV arrives....just looks really bad on my 21" TV.

Plus I'll probably one use it when I want to record 16:9 HD content in SD .... on to my ReplayTV.

I'm probably gonna break down and rent the cable company HD DVR to timeshift HD shows. Perhaps someday there'll be a ReplayTV that will do HD. I hated the non-HD DVR...and I don't think anything has changed in the HD version...except that it can do HD, store less, but comes with a bigger drive..... Apparently a 160G drive instead of an 80G drive...and record about 16 hours instead of 32 hours. (32hours on 80G to 16hours on 160G).

Near ??? Experience?

I've been busy this past week...so I haven't done much (any) TV watching....I've only been home to catch a few hours of shuteye...and check for Poopli requests.

I'm positive that RTV4 worked during the week (though I was going to comment about RTV1 being a little bit sluggish first thing in the morning.....but freed up some space, and it seems to be going again....wonder if the drive gets fragmented or something....it is a 5160, almost everything in standard...and I was running in the single digits of hours left. It is also the oldest of all my RTVs. RTV2 is slated to become a 5250 next, but maybe I'll do RTV1 again.)

Anyways...RTV4 wouldn't respond to remote control this morning...hold the power button and reboot...a couple of times...yank the cord for reboot...unplug everything and then back...still no response to the remote (both my multi-unit remote and the factory remotes...I have lots of extras ;) )

I started to worry...but I pulled ReplayPC/PRG/Webremote...and saw that all my shows where there (and that I could mostly work the unit....darn double select bug)....I ended up watching them all using IHVS...and deleting everything.....not that I had to, but I was trying to reschedule all the recordings to other machines in case I choose to try to get warranty work on it.

I thought about doing a factory reset on it...but if the remote still didn't work, how would I navigate through the setup?

Then for some reason I'm not sure about...I decided to void my warranty....ISC was July 1st, 2003...so still some left on it. I opened it up to the IR board...and noticed the smell of something burnt.

I started wondering about getting a replacement board. But, then I saw that the solder connection on the middle lead of the IR sensor had popped (in)...so I got out my old butane soldering iron and touched it up.

But, just to be crazy....I decided while I had it open (and though I didn't damage the warranty sticker opening it up)...and since I had already watched or archived everything on the drive. I would try patching it....RTV4 is a 5060....so bumping it to 80GB would be nice. Too bad I didn't have any 250GB drives just laying about extra at the moment. But, I plan to upgrade the 5040s first.

Put it all back together....the hard part was getting to cover to go back on....in doing so, I destroyed the warranty sticker.... >:(

Hook it all back up...plugged it in....waited for it to come up and shut off. And, then I used the remote....it works.

Neat thing....was I don't have any extra IDE ports in my computer to connect drives for patching....it is on my list to get a dual drive firewire enclosure. What I did have was an extra DVD firewire unit...I opened it up, and hooked the RTV drive instead of the DVD...and that worked....and since I have an extra CD-RW firewire unit elsewhere....hmmm.....

....darn, just remembered, I was going to donate that to the charity auction last week. One of the things that kept be busy last week....even in the final hours of the auction, I was still trying to iron out bugs in the software.
