Sleep Cycle on my iPhone

Last weekend, while checking my usual daily websites....I came across mention of a gadget on gdgt called WakeMate. I have been toying with the idea of getting one of these gadgets for years, decades? Definitely well before I learned of my sleep disorders and started the therapy for them.

Now I still have other problems and eventually hope to start some kind of treatment for those. Soon I'll be done with the joys of taking iron pills for the 'anemia'.

So, while googling around trying to learn about WakeMate, I came across a review of Sleep Cycle. An iPhone app that also works by monitoring your sleep and trying figure out the optimal point in a window before your planned wake time to wake you.

Give that it was only 99cents, I decided I didn't have anything to lose by trying it. Though it was kind of inconvenient that it was Sunday when I found it. But, I decided to start using it right away....seemed safe enough to try.

Here's the sleep graph for my first night:

SleepGraphFeb22

The window the app does is 30 minutes, and this first night it woke me 30 minutes before my normal alarm. And, I certainly wasn't feeling it, so I ignored it and went back to sleep....ended up sleeping through to my normal 3rd alarm.

The 3 alarm sequence is radio alarm, which is followed with a beeper alarm, which is then followed by a light coming on....a 55W CFL 5000K lamp.

I continued to use the app...and by the 5th night (Friday morning) I woke a few minutes before my alarm, found a sleep graph of this:

SleepGraphFeb26

and was able to get out of bed. Had to hang around the bedroom to shush the alarm....but managed to get my morning things done and out the door at a good time.

I continued to run it over the weekend....

Friday Night/Saturday Morning:

SleepGraphFeb27

Saturday Night/Sunday Morning:

SleepGraphFeb28

Woke up good on Saturday and managed to do all the errands I wanted to get done....first going to Aggieville and then later going the other way to Westloop.

Sunday morning was also good, but then the lazy kicked in and I ended up not going out to do the other errands in the Westloop area. So, thinking I might hit Campus Food or something again. ;D

I wonder if I should ask about getting another Sleep Study and see what kind of sleep structure I'm having now. There's a Zeo product that get into sleep structure....though the forehead attachment for its sensors is a problem, since my CPAP mask covers my forehead. But, the Sleep Cycle app does show that it does take me a while to fall asleep now and the waking during the night...which sometimes takes forever to get back to sleep again. Could be much worse looking if I weren't taking a sleep aid....

Hopefully doing something about the next thing wrong with me will finally do it.

I got an Airport Extreme

I had been thinking of getting one of these units for a while, though wondering if I could use just as an AP.

Meanwhile, Cox has been improving its speed...but I wasn't seeing the improvement. Could see the upstream improvement, but not so much with the downstream. Well, its an old WRT54GS v1.1....and I guess I've hit the ceiling on it. Though turning off wondershaper (QoS) made an improvement in speed, though still not the full advertised speed of Cox Preferred. Not sure if that's the local competition or the next ceiling.

So, got to thinking that I needed a new router....after some quick searching around, it seemed too much trouble track down a modifiable router so that I could still have wondershaper... and one that offered improved WiFi (since pretty much can't get them without WiFi). When it occurred to me that maybe I'd just jump and get the Airport Extreme.

Without wondershaper on this gateway, I moved the main upstream hogs to go through the other WRT54GS and Internet connection....the DSL service, where things aren't getting me down....

Decided to go ahead and upgrade to 3.3.3, even though the dashboard said I was already running the latest version at 3.3.2.

Today I've decided to commit

that's commit to lifetime service for my TiVo HD's.

Hard to believe that I'm coming up on 2 years with my first TiVo HD. First year I did monthly fee on a 1 year commitment, and when that was ending, I opted to pay for a year in advance. As that nears completion, I got an email with a promo code to get lifetime service for $100 off.

I had considered getting lifetime last year, but $399 was a little hard to jump on at the time. Of course, $299 now...probably would've been cheaper if I had jumped on lifetime last year... but, hindsight being what it is and not yet being graced with a TARDIS.... )-o

Meanwhile, a short while after I got the first TiVo HD, I had pulled the trigger on a second TiVo HD. Got the first in March, 2008 from woot.com, got the other during the summer in preparation of the new fall season (July). That one started on 1 year commit month-to-month with Multi-Service Discount (MSD). Lifetime service on that with the MSD is $299, which I could've gone with when my first year was up...except that the disparity of costs per unit and order of unit acquisition or other strange think that is me  I couldn't rationalize the move....so I made no new commitment and stayed month to month on it.

But, now that I've pulled the trigger on lifetime for my first TiVo HD....it has cleared the way for me to also get lifetime on my second TiVo HD. Though due to the timing of renewal dates, the second TiVo HD will get its lifetime service before my first TiVo HD :lalala:

Now what am I going to do with my two (remaining) ReplayTVs both with lifetime service (one's a 250G and the other's a 300G)..... :hmm:

Handy Switch Recall #fail

Link: http://ideavillage.com/detail_1.html

A while back I bought one of these "Handy Switch"s through Publisher's Clearing House. It was great. Decided to get a second one as a possible gift.

But, then I got a letter before Xmas from Publisher's Clearing House....it is being recalled. -- https://www.handyswitchrecall.com/

They have two options....get a cap that goes over the receiver, so in the event of failure it will try to contain the fire damage from it or send the receiver back for exchange.

I opted for the latter.

However what I got back is not a Handy Switch...and the receiver is 3 prong....so it won't work in most places, especially the place that I was using the Handy Switch. Unless I cut the extra prong off....or something.

And, the control unit isn't as nice as the Handy Switch, was was kind of a draw....since I have other remote switch products...the control is also not as pictured...its just the single push button (instead of the pictured on/off rocker)...a small hand held unit.

Guess its back to the quest...

Now instead of subjecting some poor random forum to a long rambling thought, I will try to consolidate those things into this blog where they can be more easily ignored profess to be collected thoughts from my mind.
