I got an APC BX1300LCD

I didn't really plan on getting this UPS, but I was planning to get a UPS.

I had been eyeballing the CyberPowerSystems CP1000AVRLCD. The university computer store had one in for $145. While Amazon.com has it for ~$109. Though wasn't quite sure how to work delivery of the Amazon.com around my work schedule.

If the difference hadn't been so wide, I might have taken the plunge and grabbed the UPS from the university computer store. One factor over other (smaller) choices was that it had 5 battery backed outlets. Which means I could put all of 'gumby' and its external drives on it, and one for temporarily placing 'box'.

But, then today I was out eating lunch with some co-workers...and my quest for a new UPS came up....so not in a hurry to get back to work after lunch, we popped into Wal-Mart. Which oddly doesn't seem to sell UPSs? Couldn't confirm, because nobody would help me as I stood around in the electronics department....

So, then we popped over to Best Buy. Of the choices....it came down to the Geek Squad 1285VA and an APC 1300VA. The APC was ~$3 cheaper, and had a hair more capacity. Though the capacity isn't really a big deal for what I'm using. But, that one choice was APC and it was slightly cheaper...I went with that one.

Plus the APC has 6 battery protected outlets, while the Geek Squad (which I already have one of) only has 4 (I also have the CyberPowerSystems version). This means I could put all the things I wanted directly onto the UPS, plus I threw the LCD monitor onto it as well.

Amazon.com sold a BR1300LCD, which from what I've read the difference is the BR model can trim over-voltage conditions in its AVR, while the BX can only boost under-voltage conditions. I don't know of a situation here where I've seen overvoltage, so I think I can get away without it. I know this was a problem back when I was living in Ohio though.

Meanwhile, there's a new 500GB SATA drive sitting on a desk waiting to be installed into 'orac'.

Chase Fraud Fail

The Chase Fraud Department has failed. They closed and canceled my card on Friday saying there was suspicious activity that they blocked, and wanted me to confirm (which I didn't.)

Except that my new account is showing those suspicious charges made on Friday and Saturday....a new account that I haven't yet gotten the new card for, or activated, yet.

Last time this happened, when they said they would take care of the unauthorized charges....I never saw those unauthorized charges.... But, this time they went and posted the charges yesterday to my new account? >:-(

Post Office hates Netflix again.

NetFlix return times had been great for a while....I'd pop the return in the mailbox on Monday, NetFlix would have it on Tuesday, and I'd have my next selection on Thursday. Possibly because the nearest netflix location had changed from Kansas City to Topeka.

But, then I mailed a selection back on Monday, March 30th...and NetFlix didn't get it right away. I suppose there might be some slowdown because its closing on tax day. But, it has now been over a week, and they still don't have it.

Meanwhile, I mailed another selection back on Monday, April 6th. And, they also don't have it.

I've gone and reported the DVD I returned on March 30th as MIA....now to wait so that I can report the one I mailed on April 6th as MIA.... :`(

UPS Oversight

On Monday there was a brief power outage....I didn't notice from work at first, because the UPS there were no issues affecting the computers at home that I accessed from work. Two didn't go down at all, and one rebooted by itself.

The Windows 2000 had started booting up, but since it mounts shares samba shares from the other box that didn't come up nicely...it was stuck until I told it to ignore trying to remount the share and continue. :-(

The other box is the ubuntu server where the missing samba share originates from. I had set this system up as RAID1, and one of the drives stopped working after the outage. But, ubuntu wouldn't boot without both drives. :??: Found I had to add 'bootdegraded=true' to the kernel line in grub.

Later the old APC Back-UPS Office 500 started making lots of noise. Time to replace its battery. Or perhaps time to retire it from service. I moved the loads to one of the remaining UPSs, and pulled the UPS while I investigated trade-in or replacement options.

Then this morning, I heard a strange continuous beep.....while trying to figure out where it was coming from....everything went dark. Or rather I saw my ubuntu server go down, and later on the KVM switch I saw that two other computers were booting up. Evidently, the remaining UPS was already handling too much...and its only a 700VA UPS.

I had forgotten that I had a plan to add a (Smart)UPS to the living room and move the Geeksquad 1285VA UPS eventually to run the ubuntu server (since that was the most recent addition, and it didn't have a UPS for it)....so it had been parked on the UPS that runs 'box'. Well, moving 'gumby' definitely put it over the top....probably especially with its 3 external drives. (used to be 4, but one died).

I guess it is not only time to rush on acquiring a UPS to replace the APC one that I retired, but also acquire a UPS to put the Linux servers 'box' and 'orac' onto separate UPSs.

I think I was eyeballing a CyberPower 1000VA UPS yesterday....the question is will it still go in the same place I was looking. Maybe I don't care that much about 'gumby'....though newer UPSs have lots of protected outlets, so I thought it might park nicely next to it and reduce the confusion of the which of the many powerstrips are plugged into which UPS, etc.

Am I at the point yet where a Smart-UPS can materialize, or maybe I'm looking at an additional CyberPower 1000VA (or perhaps something bigger, but still cheap)....

Hmmmm.... :hmm:

Update on Surround Air XJ-3800 Intelli-Pro Air Purifier

Yesterday morning, I heard a strange click behind me. Scanning the room behind me, I eventually saw that there was a flashing red light on my Surround Air XJ-3800. Closer inspection showed it was for "Clean Metal Grid", not sure what I would do if it had been for "Replace Filter" (since its too soon, and I wasn't planning to buy one until close to its first anniversary).

Not realizing that the Surround Air was going to need special maintenance, more complicated than my other (2) EnviroSense Air Purifiers. I wasn't sure what I was supposed to do for this 'message'.

Locating the manual, I found there was quite a procedure to extracting the metal grid and cleaning it and the wires. And, then putting it back and doing a reset.

Had I known, I probably wouldn't have gotten this unit and stuck to either getting another EnviroSense or like device. Also the lack of a remote on this unit is something I miss, especially for its location in my living room.

If only the Multi-Tech S5000 Air Purifier were available then....perhaps this Surround Air model would've been more desirable. Though its not available through Amazon Prime....OTOH, the Multi-Tech A4000 Air Purifier is. And, it is cheaper than the XJ-3800...and seems to be more along in the like EnviroSense classification.

But, no plans to add additional Air Purifiers to my condo....any time soon. Plus I'd still be stuck with this one somewhere....

Call from Chase Fraud Department today

For the 3rd time since I've had a Chase Perfectcard, I've had my card closed by Chase due to fraudulent online charges.

First time was in April 2005. The second time was in January 2008. And, now a third time....April 2009. This and the first time, are both before I plan to go on trips....so some added inconvenience.

Not sure I sense a trend.... :hmm:

I don't understand why there's so much trouble with this card, and not my other ones....Visa, Discover, American Express. With the exception of American Express, the cards get pretty much the same kind of usage...most of the same places in brick and mortar use (except places that don't accept Discover)...and generally the same kind of online activities.

The last time this happened, I talked about whether or not I should be looking for a different company to provide me a Mastercard. Perhaps it is time to revisit that idea again.

If only it wasn't such as hassle, etc. Plus the timing sucks this time again....

Using my American Express Reward Points

There's currently a promotion of 20% for using my American Express Reward Points at shopAMEX.

Now, I've been accumulating points since I've been a member of the reward program. I don't recall how long that has been, but it has been slow work to build up to where I'm at.

Now, there was some (bedroom) furniture items that I've been thinking of getting...and because of the current promotion, I found myself browsing for said items on shopAMEX.

And, found that I could get a two of those items using my points. And, the 20% probably the only reason I would consider using my points for purchasing something this way.

So, the items I ordered were a new dresser (my old one is falling in on itself) and a new headboard.

Shortly afterwards, I get an email saying that the order for the dresser (with Wal-Mart.com) was rejected. And, no immediate refund of my points. So, I couldn't go and order from somewhere else....at least not right away.

The later, I got an email from account security about a possible fraud charge from Wal-Mart.com for the dollar amount of the order that I was ordering with points.

I called and said that I didn't use my card at Wal-Mart.com, though it was flagged as suspicious because they tried to charge the same amount twice. Discussing this further, I was then put in contact with shopAMEX to try to resolve the mess that Wal-Mart had caused.

Apparently, the way things work, is the points are turned into cash and credited to my account. And, the reward vendor then charges their order against the card. I was told that since Wal-Mart had rejected my order, I could take the cash value of the reward and use it towards the purchase of the item somewhere else.

Not really feeling things, and the dresser piece was kind of an impulse of get it while I'm at it .... I opted to have my points refunded. I still have until April 10th to take advantage of the 20% deal, so I could try again later. Or I could go somewhere entirely different and get the dresser.

The one that I went with was based on points left over after the headboard...so if not tied to using my points, I might go with something different. In fact, I have been thinking of other changes to the bedroom....though some sort of dresser is still called for.

Hmmm.... :hmm:

Norton Antivirus 2009 is gone

Even though I still had 299 days left to my current subscription, I decided to nuke Norton Antivirus 2009 from my computer. Disabling stuff on it just so that I can use my computer was getting annoying.

First I had disable so that I can run BOINC projects on my computer, this means there's that annoying red X on the tray icon.

Today, I couldn't check my email because the inbound email scanner was broken....another thing that needed to be disabled. And, there were other quirks that seemed related, but I wasn't sure.

Of course, I don't like being unprotected. So, my employer has a site license for AntiVirus software...all on site computers are required to run it, but additionally employees and students are allowed to run it on their own computers. Once upon a time, it was Norton Antivirus that the University provided. But, a couple years ago they switched to Trend Micro. I think they just renewed for another 3 years.

So, I have installed Trend Micro. It has the annoying habit of identifying stuff that I want to run as spyware or malware and not giving any choice but to remove it....and without asking me. I had identd running on my desktop, probably left over from when I used a Windows IRC client. I vaguely recall that there was some other reason I had it, it didn't do anything dangerous...it was configured just to make whatever service that wanted to find it happy. But, during the Trend Micro installation...it silently saw it and uninstalled it from my computer.

A few years ago, it was uninstalling a home watching webcam software. It had classified it as spyware and kept removing it. Ya...it is spyware, its so I can spy on my home when I'm not home and see if anything is happening. I don't use it anymore, though I keep thinking I need to have something back again. Though I'm looking for something that is not computer dependent....

Oh well....
