Panasonic Dect 6.0 Series 3 Handset Cordless Phone System with Answering System (KX-TG1033S)

I had been thinking a long time about replacing my cordless phone system at home. Mainly because it was a 2.4GHz system, though I had held off because I the VoIP service that it is attached is kind of noisy and I only have 100 minutes per month with it.

But, I had been eyeballing a Panasonic DECT 6.0 based cordless phone system. Then two months ago, I was at LISA and went on the Fry's BoF. Trying to think of stuff I wanted to buy while at Fry's...I looked at their cordless phone section. And, remembered that I've been wanting to get this system for a while.

I couldn't remember whether I wanted a 3 handset or a 4 handset system, they were all cheaper than online prices I had seen elsewhere....but the 3 handset system was on sale for further savings. So, I grabbed it. Though looks like I wanted a 4 handset system (someday I plan to declutter the other bedroom and make use of it, so a handset in that location would be useful). Guess I'll have to take the expensive route of adding a handset later (though it can't be too much later, in case newer models come out and obsolete the system I have).

Today, I was sitting around thinking of what else I could do to fill out my weekend...and I decided that this might be the day to finally set it up.

Preliminary testing, shows that most of the noise that I experienced with using this VoIP service have gone away.

Guess it makes sense...it is probably hard for a 2.4GHz phone to be clear when surrounded by tons of 2.4GHz WiFi and other devices around my condo.

I had considered other frequencies....but 900Mhz cordless phones are scarce, and I never had much success with them in the past. I already have a Panasonic 5.8GHz cordless phone, which is on my other VoIP service and it works well...but the intent was that the VoIP service that does provide me with a local number should be my primary (and perhaps prompt me to discontinue the other one). And, at the time I was using 5.8Ghz wireless rear surrounds....which the 5.8GHz cordless phone would prevent from working (noted in some previous blog posting).

So, that pretty much left 1.9Ghz DECT as the frequency I hadn't tried yet.

So far so good....maybe if it works out well, it may finally be time to get rid of Vonage....I would prefer to stay with them, since they were my first and other than the lack of a local number (and the annoying calls that aren't for me that I get on it, they way they appear seems to indicate that the person they are calling is continuing to give out this number as theirs)....they've been good.

If I do, I'll probably have to upgrade the other VoIP to 'unlimited' calling. With Vonage I just have the 500 minute calling plan, which is adequate for my usage....but 100 minutes isn't.

Norton Antivirus 2009 still hates BOINC

I never did get a conclusion from my support issue with Symantec, but at some point in recent history...I had turned advanced protection back on.

Now it is interfering with Hydrogen@Home.

My subscription runs out in a week....what should I get to replace this?

Select Comfort Firmness Controller

Well, among the packages that UPS brought today....was the replacement (refurbished) Firmness Controller for my Select Number 5000 bed.

I got the bed in October of 2004...so its over 5 years old. Though this is my 3rd refurbished Firmness Controller....it was just September that I had gotten one. Hopefully this'll be the 3rd time's a charm.

I did find myself checking out new beds the other day....did notice on the Select Number site that it seems my model of bed can only be ordered with wireless remotes now. I had chosen wired remotes when I bought the bed. Wonder if that's saying something.... :?:

Still no luck on that reason to need to buy a dual chambered Select Number bed.... ;)

Netflix: Ratatouille

I rated this 4 stars.

:rs::rs::rs::rs::ys:

Used the Netflix Instant on my TiVo HD (connected to Cox HSI Preferred). Initially the quality was 9 bars, but it degraded quickly to only 6 bars.

Maybe I should've used the TiVo HD on my DSL connection? :??:

Speed testing seems to confirm that I should've.....

CPAP Night Five

This night was not too different from last night. Other then a slight rearrangement of stuff around my bed (due to the introduction of a PowerSource 400 and another Night Stand, so now my CPAP machine is completely on the night stand and the hose comes straight off the back instead of deflecting off my alarm clock (CPAP was as far forward without its feet being off the stand, and the alarm clock was as far back the same...and in opposite corners)....now the alarm clock has moved to the other night stand. Might help me from turning it off before I'm completely awake. Though I think the CPAP will have a bigger effect on stopping that from happening. The main changes would be that I washed the nasal pillow using baby shampoo instead of dish soap and the humidifier was filled with distilled water.

Didn't notice any difference humidifier wise, though didn't really expect to. Still have it set lower than I would like to avoid rain-out. According to the tracking number, my order containing the cover was processed yesterday in Nashua, NH....so probably no chance of priority mail getting it to my box today. So, it'll have to wait until next Saturday's trip to my box to get it. Of course, if they had sent it to the shipping address I had specified on the order....I'd have it much sooner. Perhaps I'll have to explore other measures for rain-out prevention in the meantime....

But, I did notice the change to baby shampoo....sadly there was hint of baby shampoo smell instead, when I first put on my mask. Guess I need to work on my cleaning technique. In the morning there was still that smell after the mask was removed, and nose is sore again....wonder if I should give the next size down another try.

I did get up once during the night....got a sip of water while I was up, but not because I had to.

I also did dream last night, don't know if that was good or bad....I guess I was hungry....

Select Comfort Update

I had sent an email to customer support at Select Comfort at 12:32 am (12/30)....

This afternoon (1/2) I got a reply that a replacement wired pump is coming by UPS within the next 10 business days.

Which is probably good, because it has stopped working again.

Ecotones - Ambient Adaptive Sound Therapy System

Link: http://www.hammacher.com/publish/76034.asp

A little while ago, on one of the gadget blogs I follow, I heard about this product. It then appeared on a few others. I saw a listing for it on Amazon.com, but it wasn't actually available....so I put it on my wish list as something I would get in the future.

This is something I have toyed with getting for my bedroom...to help combat the noises that my neighbors make...though some of the noises they make are just rude, and being a bad neighbor, and I thought this was a no pets property....

And, from the description this sounded like it fit the bill. Later I saw that Hammacher Schlemmer was carrying it. So, I made a note to buy it...so that it would arrive shortly after my return from winter vacation.

It wasn't ordered in time to get it before Christmas...and the UPS tracking said it would arrive on December 30th. But, apparently while I was out getting the CPAP on December 29th...UPS showed up to try and deliver it. So, I waited at home to receive it on the 30th, as originally planned.

Now that I had it...I quickly discovered two (and then a third) problem with it. First, when you plug it in...it goes through a calibration process and emits a very loud tone. And, it does this every time it gets power. Meaning, hope the power never blinks in the middle of the night, or you'll get a rude awakening.

Kind of a problem since I got it to help deal with noise when trying to get to sleep...and stay asleep. But, now I have it on the PowerSource 400 I recently acquired.

Second was that the 12 choices of SoundStories...were the only sound options for it. There's no plain white noise or the like. I figured "Relaxing Fan" would be the one to go with. I have sometimes cranked my aircleaner to full blast to help mask condo noises. But, that level of noise is kind of bothersome....as well...and I prefer to leave it in automatic mode, and not have to remember switching it in and out, etc. Though the ecotones unit is more expensive than the aircleaner....

Later I discovered a 3rd problem...the "Relaxing Fan" SoundStory contains a chime element. Which I found disturbing...and eventually set out to find a different SoundStory.

Other, SoundStories are already not to my liking or contain other distracting elements...like birds chirping or cars honking, sirens.

Currently, I've settled on "Distant Thunderstorm" as my SoundStory. I didn't really want a water based theme, since normally I find the sound of water very worisome and distracting. Too many occasions, where I've heard the sound of water...and something bad is causing the sound. Now I hear something like the sound of water, and spend time wandering my condo checking if there's something wrong.

Plus a real Thunderstorm would usually wake me up at night.....

Now instead of subjecting some poor random forum to a long rambling thought, I will try to consolidate those things into this blog where they can be more easily ignored profess to be collected thoughts from my mind.
