Woot : Oreck XL Professional Air Purifier

Link: http://www.woot.com/Blog/BlogEntry.aspx?BlogEntryId=3189

Back on October 25th, there was a woot-off. I was new to Woot. Only finally signed up a few days earlier. But, as I was watching stuff go by this day....I saw this Oreck XL Professional Air Purifier.

Some might argue it wasn't necessarily the best price that could be had at that instant. But, I knew I wanted at least another one...and the price was lower than what I had paid for my previous remanufactured unit. And, they didn't seem to be available anymore directly from the Oreck site. So, I snapped one up.

But, after it arrived I put the box aside and eventually forgot about it. During the icestorm power outage on December 11th, I moved it to another room as I was using the space as compact area away from all outside walls to huddle for warmth.

In the post....I've been inside my Linux server (which is slowing coming back), and it sure was dusty inside. After blowing all that dust back into the air....it occurred to me that I had this air purifier that I should set up in this room. It was one of the places that I had intended to get one for.

So, I cleared a spot on my old printer table (had envisioned getting more furniture into the room, though it might be a while off before I get around to that....) And, it is off and running.

Another FAIL: Linux Server Resurrection

I picked up the new motherboard from the UPS store today, and after lots of work...I got it into the old case and all the other parts on to it.

Don't know if the old processor would've worked, opted to go with the new one. Partly because I don't know where fresh heatsink compound is....

It boots....the HD light seems to be stuck on all the time (the panel connector didn't quite match the jack on the new motherboard)...and it seems to get stuck if the keyboard doesn't respond. Upside, it appears that this motherboard has the ability to resume after power loss.

Seems to be running on the most part...that there seems to be some fs weirdness. :??:

Today's UPS delivery

Link: http://www.batterymart.com

was UPS related.... ;)

The replacement UPS batteries I had ordered arrived.

A pair of SLA-12V9-F2's to get the Cyberpower CPS1500AVR-HO working again. And, an SLA-HC1221W for the old APC BackUPS Office BF500...it doesn't need it yet, but decided to have it on hand for when it does.

I also got some 392 watch batteries, to power some recent gadgets I got from ThinkGeek.

New Computer - Gateway GT5636E Core 2 Quad

Link: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883113042

Core 2 Quad Q6600(2.40GHz) goodness with 2GB of RAM for <$750....has arrived! :!:

Don't know what I'm going to do with it yet...wonder if I should turn it on? Not planning to leave the Vista Home Premium that it came preinstalled with. It'll either be some distro of Linux, I'm thinking of trying Ubuntu Server 7.10....or Solaris (either the Solaris 10 8/07 release or one of the OpenSolaris Express Editions.)

Guess I'll see whether I can resurrect the old Linux box first....will decide if I need to build a machine to read the old drives or not.

Meanwhile it looks like my WiRNS box has eaten itself.....had to quickly reconfigure my network (both gateway routers) and DHCP....and make the ReplayTVs talk directly to DNNA. As soon as I find the old install disc, I'll try repairing the OS. Otherwise, I may have to look into stepping up my Windows upgrade plans. Or make that switch to Mac.

CP1285AVRLCD is Geek Squad GS-1285U?

So much for avoiding Cyberpowersystems UPSs in the future, because of the let down of past models.

Evidently the Geek Squad GS-1285U that I picked up recently, is just a rebranded Cyberpowersystems CP1285AVRLCD.

The first hint was it came with software called 'PowerPanel'. Later I was skimming the manual for the CP1285AVRLCD and it seemed like I had just read it somewhere before.....

Though can't seem to locate what kind of replacement battery it'll need....also interesting that Best Buy says the batteries are hot swappable, but from the instructions it is clearly impossible to replace the batteries with it hot.

Mourning the loss of my Linux server

Yesterday I picked up the fans and new CPU from the UPS store....and set out to try to resurrect the Linux server. Which I found had been purchased on August 14th, 2002.

The original CPU fan was a ~6cm x 1.5cm....Amazon Prime could get me either a 6cm x 1cm or 6cm x 2cm. I got both. The 6cm x 2cm was too big (guess the 6cm is an approximate dimension with CPU fans... >:-( ). But the 6cm x 1cm fan would fit.

That didn't help.

So, I got the Athlon XP 2000+ retail processor out (with its bundled heatsink/fan) and tried that....still no go. Guess more than just the CPU went.

I had started looking around for ideas on what kind of computer I would get to replace it if I had to. The hard part was that there just doesn't seem to be any more retail computers to 3 PATA drives (+PATA CD drive). They are all with only one PATA header now.....guess SATA has taken over. So, I started looking at what I could for cheap/fast in Core 2 Duo's, and then for grins I looked at Core 2 Quad's.

The Linux server has been my fastest single processor BOINC machine at home. The Windows desktop is a P4 w/HT, so it does two WUs at the same time...but each thread takes more time than the Linux server does....

Saw that I could get new computer from NewEgg....a Core 2 Quad for under $750.

So, that's what I ordered....except Newegg triggered a fraud alert probably because they reformatted my billing/shipping address from the way I entered (which is the exact way my statement comes, which is also the format dictated by the post office.) I approved it, but Newegg is saying that the charge was declined. :##

Now instead of subjecting some poor random forum to a long rambling thought, I will try to consolidate those things into this blog where they can be more easily ignored profess to be collected thoughts from my mind.
