PageFile fustration

Ever since I started running Yahoo! Widgets and lots of widgets, memory has been really tight on my system. And, early on I got the low VM warning. So I had bumped my pagefile settings to 3 times memory.

Today, I got back into processing shows into DVDs, and I got the low VM warning again. Scratching my head....I went to bump the pagefile settings again....except I noticed that it wasn't using my settings.

After dozen or so reboots and various other hair pulling....I decided to plug yet more key words into Google to see if it would shed some light. Never would of guessed that it was a really old problem and that it was related to the Norton AntiVirus 2004 that I have on my computer.

But, this was it:

He was using Norton AntiVirus 2004 (version The computer where I noticed this problem was also using NAV 2004. After a few days, he noted that the "fix" is still holding. Specifically, turning "Auto-Protect -> Advanced -> Load Auto-Protect during system boot" on and off is sufficient to re-introduce and then to clear the bug (the failure to honor page file changes across a reboot).

Now I have a pagefile of 4095MB....should be plenty of VM. Though someday I'll up the machine to 2GB of memory. No immediate plans to upgrade yet. Probably gonna wait until Vista before I do, if I do....

Annoying cookie issue with Firefox

I've been suffering with an annoying cookie problem with that after a week or so, cookies for sites that I visit regularly...but not every day....get lost. >:-(

I finally did a Google search on the subject...and apparently there's a set limit of only 1000 cookies in Firefox, and the parameter to allow you to adjust it doesn't show in about:config.

But, adding network.cookie.maxNumber allows you to control things and I put in 65535. Wonder if I'll run into this limit elsewhere.... to update my other Firefox instances....

The death of dialup....

Long after I got broadband service, I continued to have a dialup ISP account. Namely with IBM->ATT Global->Business Net (I think that's how it evolved).... I was principally using the account so that I could access the Internet when traveling, though I did occasionally have to use it as backup for when my broadband was down. And, there was also the gap during my last move.

But, about a year and half now, I've been living landline free at home. So, using it as backup to my broadband....just doesn't work anymore. And, the amount of travel I do is so very little, and just about everywhere I've gone...there has been some kind of WiFi access. Free or Pay.

About the only reason I'm truly hesitant to give up the account, is the email address. For a long time it was my stable, non-free, non-personalized email address (and not dependent on any of the domains that I have registered....) Which was supposed to mean that it was the most reliable way to reach me. Except that it is 99.999% spam these days...and that's at a rate of 100's of messages per day.

So, I think it will be time to finally cancel my dialup account. Even though the monthly savings will be insignificant compared to the upcoming change in lifestyle....:**:

New URC8910 for operation of my Momitsu V880N

While, it has been much nicer working my Momitsu V880N since I JP1'd the old URC8910 that I had to control it. It hasn't been perfect. The biggest issue being the crummy directional arrow disc and the select button.

Knowing the Momitsu V880N, this is something that gets a workout in normal use....especially since I use mine to watch media files from my PC more than I use it to watch DVDs.

But, I happened to have been browsing in Best Buy a while back, and spotted a newer URC8910 that had done away with the disc control and had separate buttons, like my URC6131. But, I wasn't sure I wanted for fork out just for that....

URC8910B00 versus URC8910B02

Later I came back to it again, but still couldn't rationalize in my mind to get it.....

Now instead of subjecting some poor random forum to a long rambling thought, I will try to consolidate those things into this blog where they can be more easily ignored profess to be collected thoughts from my mind.
