Staples Desley Mesh Task Chair, Gray

Link: http://www.staples.com/Staples-Desley-Mesh-Task-Chair-Gray/product_807574

So, recently I pulled the trigger on getting a new computer....which I'm sure I'll write about later, so I won't talk about it now.

But having done so, there was the problem of making room for a new computer. Since the new computer is to replace my current, it isn't so much space to put the new computer...but rather space to move the old computer to.

For a long time, I've thought about clearing a corner in the bedroom I use as a storeroom. Originally the plan was to locate a network laser printer to this space. It is very doubtful that I would have the juice to handle a laser printer in the living room, and probably definitely not when the the fuser fires up. Though one would hope that things have come forward to the point where it isn't as bad as the Xerox 4045 I once owned. I had snake power from another part of my house to run it, and it would still dim everything. I had already cleared networking an an outlet towards this possibility.

That probably won't happen in the near future now...

Anyways, I launched into plans to make the space happen....I had a printer stand that would free up with some work, that would go into this space....I would just use it as a computer stand in the new plan. But, it would need a chair. So, I did a quick online search....Amazon Prime was the usually first place. Though I had wish-listed some other options from Staples. But, I'm on a budget right now....so I went looking for less expensive options. First Amazon.com, and the Staples.com. I was looking for a mesh chair...nothing with a mesh seat in my current price range though. But, I noticed that the current Weekly Ad for Staples.com had a simple mesh task chair for $29.99 ($20 off).

Well, that's very cheap....since the plan doesn't have spending a lot of time at this computer, it should be more than adequate...otherwise I would want a chair with arm rests and a bit more adjust-ability.

The only hard part of the ordering process, was that staples.com kept apologizing for being down....

So, I spent the weekend working on clearing a spot for printer stand and a chair....as I went along, I decided to free up more and more space. If all goes well now, there will be a small computer desk going into the space as well. Considering something from Staples.com, and this week's Weekly Ad. I may yet do the network printer in this space, in fact I'm considering just moving my current printer (HP Photosmart 8450xi, which I am using networked)...since I'm probably going to need all the desk space with the new computer...and a pair of 23" wide-screen monitors.

Anyways, the chair arrived today...and I decided that before I had lunch I would set it up. Turned out to be really easy to put together...everything was included, along with extras. And, it was a lot better quality than I expected for the price. But, its still very basic. Though I wish I had gotten two. I could've finally replaced the chair that's falling apart in front of the computers in the other bedroom that's computers and clutter. Guess I'll have to keep an eye out....or stick with the plan to eventually get a much better chair in the living room and move that one.

So, wonder if I should get another chair mat or two...

KitchenAid 12-Cup Glass Carafe Coffee Maker

Link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003TT0WYS/ref=oss_product

As I had blogged on Friday, my Mr. Coffee Coffee Maker had failed. So, that day I did the 'normal' thing...I went to Amazon.com and looked to see what coffee maker I could get via Amazon Prime. More specifically, shipped next day (Monday, they don't seem to do Saturday's anymore).

There were many fine choices in a wide range of prices that glass carafe, used regular basket filters (I had tried cone once), and wasn't Mr. Coffee. (fail me once, shame on you....same reason I won't consider GE appliances)

At first I wanted cheap and fast, though I extended the pricing a little bit because I didn't like the reviews of some of the units and form is still important to me. But, I was constraining price to do the purchase using remaining American Express Membership Rewards (after having used some to buy that heater I blogged of earlier.)

When I got home from work, and finding the box sitting on my doorstep. I'm promptly set out to get it set up and run the first pot of water to flush it out, and get it ready for tomorrow morning. It was interest to find that it has a removable water tank. Not sure how useful it is to me, given where I've put it and how difficult it was get repositioned behind the coffee maker to set down again. Though the water lid lifting the reverse way does also make it challenging to fill from water pitcher.

Other quirk I found is it is really easy to get into the time change mode, single press of the mode button. Also disturbing is the 1-4 cup mode is the same button, but only after going through the 3 time settings (hour, minute, am/pm).

And, finally the next oddity is the overloading of the brew button. Press once to instantly make coffee, press and hold to make coffee at scheduled time. And, its indication is that the lighted ring around the button flashes, no beep. Kind of a problem with my thumbs....covering up the button and the light ring completely. Though I did later see that the display says 'Auto'.

Now that I've used it one day....the resulting cup of coffee this morning was satisfactory, and should be great with some adjustment. Do find it annoying that the 1-4 cup mode doesn't stick, while the 'bold' mode does.

The nice thing this morning, is no more dribble carafe. Though it has an attached flip lid still...which makes washing inconvenient to me. Also it doesn't empty completely with a quick flip over the sink like I'm used to. But, definitely nice that all the coffee goes into my cup, rather than half of it splashing onto the counter and floor....no matter how carefully or slowly I try to go.

Looking forward to a long future of coffee, and not think about what my next coffee maker is going to be (though thoughts of getting a single serve machine still come up now and then, as does getting an espresso machine again....)

Though tomorrow morning will be the last of my Boca Java coffee, though my next shipment should be in transit.

Kind of bothersome that apparently UPS tracking numbers are not unique....Boca Java says it shipped my order on December 12th, but the UPS site says it was delivered and left at the front door....on closer inspection see that its been left in Portsmouth, VA...and finally that it happened on June 22nd, 2009. But, shipped/billed on December 14th, 2010. Not the first time I've had this scare with UPS tracking....

BTW, does anybody know of a good android app that's equivalent to the Delivery Status app on the iPhone?

Soleus Air HR1-08R-21 Oscillating Reflective Heater, Silver, Black

Link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001AHBVJ6/ref=oss_product

So, lately in the mornings it has been kind of nippy in front of my main computer out in the living room. Probably because of 3 exterior walls, and the computer against the wall with no heat registers. And, the thermostat is in the warmest spot in my home...under the cold air return.

I had been bumping the thermostat in the morning when I go by it, but that's not what I really want to do long term. I had looked at getting a low wattage radiant (people) heater to use by the computer in the mornings. Needs to be low wattage, because the living room only has one circuit...and well, there's lots and lots of stuff on it.

Last Monday I had reached my limit....burr. |-| I already had an order with Amazon.com pending that I had placed over the weekend. So, using Amazon Prime and one-day option, I could have another box to arrive the same day as the rest....

I had originally identified some possible choices in heaters last winter, they were of the radiant heat, orange glow kind...either single low wattage or dual setting where the low was under 500W. Lower the better.... I checked my wishlist, and found that one of the choices was still available under Amazon Prime and could be one-day shipped to arrive the same time as my other stuff.

But, I checked other similar heaters to see what else is there. Partly because I wasn't totally sure that the model that remained was the one that I wanted. Though it was cheap (<$20) and 300W. But, it was a table top unit, and I didn't have a table top to put it on.

So, I settled on the Soleus Air HR1-08R-21...because it had a bit of stand to it and a remote control. It had two settings, 400W and 800W. I think I used to have a quartz heater that was like this at my old apartment...seemed to go away after that, probably one of the many things that didn't survive the move. Though it had two elements, and 400W was to only use one of them...to it was kind of weird to never use the other element. IIRC, only the one that I used got broke in the move too... Anyways, it was a consideration this time around, that if I got a radiant heater with multiple settings, that it didn't do it by having less uniform output.

I also decided that I would give the new option of using my American Express Membership Reward points to purchase something from Amazon.com.

TiVo HD 2 will be blank soon....

...I am now doing the process of removing the old 500GB My DVR Expander from it, which'll surely leave it blank. And, then it'll be the process of bonding it with the new 1TB My DVR AV Expander.

There was some thought on when I was going to do these upgrades....I hadn't worked it all out though, in the beginning. At first it was going to involve me getting the additional 1TB My DVR AV Expanders in separate Amazon Prime transactions. The gist was one to arrive today, and the other to arrive in a couple weeks when I'm taking the whole day off because I have a doctor's appointment in the afternoon.

But, as I was looking at the cart and the timing of things...I decided to just go ahead and get both at the same time. There's a risk that later I might not find a suitable time, though the bulk of the fall season premiere rush isn't starting until later this month.

I considered doing one this morning before heading into work...though its a lengthy process and I not really a good point in the whole thing to leave for work during. So, I deferred to after work. I wasn't sure what evening shows would need to be scheduled around, and what unwatched content I would need to tackle first. Though I considered staying a little late, so that I wouldn't have time this evening before I had to go out again. But, I opted to rush home instead so that I could do one machine (didn't check the ToDo list on TiVo HD 1, just intended to get it done before I had to go out again...which if there were scheduled recordings, it would be done before that. And, because there wasn't anything on the ToDo list for today for TiVo HD 2....I'm doing it now (that I've returned for the night).

I wasn't sure leaving it to Thursday night would work (non-TV things plus there are shows in the ToDo list for Thursday), and fairly certain that Friday night wouldn't work. So, at first I figured if not tonight it might be the weekend before I get to it. Of course, then I remembered that the first Wildcat game is this Saturday....a big thing. And, it would be on TV somewhere...so I'd want to be watching it somewhere (though likely through the TiVo Premiere...but I would be distracted from doing upgrades).

Anyways...it would've gotten done at some point. But, instead it got done tonight.

Surround Air XJ-3800 Intelli-Pro Spare Filter

Link: http://www.amazon.com/o/asin/B000K3GK4M/00--20/

Soon after owning the Surround Air XJ-3800, I found I didn't like it and had plans to eventually replace it with something else.

That's because it uses a metal grid that require periodic cleaning, and that cleaning requires significant dis-assembly, cleaning, thorough drying and a difficult reassembly process. It is the difficulty in reassembly that reminds me each time that I hate it. >:-(

Well, as I blogged here, "I bought another air cleaner", I did. ;D

But, it was still a working air purifier...so I couldn't just toss it (plus there are others sitting around not yet tossed out). So, I moved it to another spot where I someday would like to have an air purifier...but can't yet afford the specific want that I want for that location. Figured I'd at least use it until such time that it needed a consumable replaced.... plus the location is by the entrance. :P

Well, last month it finally started flashing replace filter. So, it seemed that the end was near for it. Some time later it started flashing the clean metal grid. Seems that the end should be even sooner now.

Though I did recently pick up a few cans of Oreck AirCell cleaner, which is what I use to help clean the metal grid of the Surround Air XJ-3800. And, I think I would miss having an air purifier at this location now...but it is still far off in the future that I would actually get the desired air purifier....especially since new air purifier is >10x more expensive that a new filter for the XJ-3800.

And, I was on amazon.com recently looking to buy a bunch of things...to shoot for what will hopefully be the last time I need to get a shot on Wednesday before work (have an appointment next week, that might decide that there'll be another 3 months or something)... and I felt that there was one more item that I toss into my cart for Prime Delivery. Actually, after I had placed the order, I remembered that there was something else that I had been thinking of getting....and while getting that, I threw in the filter.

That one extra item was a CFL Bug Light. Starting to get dark again...and been wanting to get a bug light for some time, though I'm sure it'll be many years before the CFL that I currently have outside burns out. OTOH, it was part of the first order to replace the CFL in the kitchen. Of course, that CFL has been in service longer than the 4+ years that I've been living here. It was among the ones that I had brought with me from Dublin, OH. Occurs to me that I should've gotten more...there's one bedroom that I still haven't switched from incandescent to CFL. And, the one in my bedroom is starting to show its age. All my inside CFLs are full spectrum.

Anyways...this part of the Amazon.com/Prime shipment arrived one day early....so this morning before going to the doctor's office...I took the Surround Air XJ-3800 apart for cleaning and the replacement of its filter. Now back...I struggled for a while to get the silly grid to go back on to its frame, and then went to install new filter.

It wasn't coming out of the plastic easily for some reason...then I noticed that there's a chunk missing from the gasket and the bag is stuck to the spot of exposed adhesive....hopefully it'll still be sufficient. But, after this...it'll probably be the definite end for this air purifier (whether I have a new one lined up by then or not...) )-o

Wonder how to tell if the UV bulb in it is still working and effective? :?:

orac's RAID6 is back

Last Saturday, I woke to find lots of SMART dialogs on orac's screen. It wasn't happy about a lot of drives, I had expected to see one or two...the usual when it does its monthly mdadm checkarray....except it wasn't Sunday yet.

I then saw that lots of drives were reading in the 80's Celsius. Concluded that the fan in the array had died and shut things down.

I then opened to see what kind of fan it used and see what my options on replacement were. First I tried looking for the exact part no. ARX DC Brushless FD1212-S3133E, DC 12V 0.32A. Lots of results of people complaining about it, etc. Not much in the way of satisfactory places for me to order it. Plus wasn't clear that it was sold in the specific pin configuration that the enclosure was using. It has a 3 pin on it, plus a 2 pin that doesn't quite look standard. Its the 2pin that plugs into the backplane of the array.

I then started looking at 120mm x 25mm 12VDC fans of comparable specs....figured I'd sort out the connector problem when I got it. I know I have a new soldering iron somewhere...that needs to get unsealed and used. ;D I then decided that I would take my search to Amazon.com and wait for it to lineup with getting it Wednesday... I ended up going with a Cooler Master Excalibur 120mm PWM Case Fan - Barometric Ball Bearing R4-EXBB-20PK-R0, it was more powerful than the old fan...but it came with 3pin and molex adapters. And, there's a pair of those feeding the backplane inside the array, so I figured on just tapping one of those to run the new fan.

As a side possibility, I would plan on checking the University computer store to see what they had on hand... I never got around to making that trip, but that's explained in part further on....

I got a TiVo Premiere

Actually, I set it up last Sunday....and I bought two weeks before that.

I got just a TiVo Premiere, figuring its stock 320GB(?) + 1TB would be sufficient (given that I have two TiVo HD's with their stock 160GB + 500GB each.) What I got immediately this time was Product Lifetime Service, because they had an upgrade offer of $200 off to go that way.

I wasn't going to set it up right at moment, because I had other things I needed to take care of...plus I had ordered a 1TB My DVR Expander AV using Amazon Prime, where I was timing for the 15th when I was going to be home to receive it.

And, then to wait for a spot to clear up for it....

So far nothing earth shattering has happened since I got my 3rd TiVo....though the Discovery Bar is intesting, as are Collections. And, the HD interface is kind of slick, though it not being 100% is kind of strange. And, it is kind of slow in places.

Also, I had an issue with the remote it came with....I had an extra TiVo Glo remote which I had gotten last summer when I thought that I was going to get TiVo HD number 3.... It doesn't have the extra 'A, B, C, D' keys of the Premiere remote...so I kind of wanted the remote that came with it to work.

I bought another air cleaner

This time I got a Winix 9000. This is the air cleaner that I had originally intended to get years ago, but in reading reviews...found a comparable model (for same price) under the Kenmore brand at Sears, and Sears was having a sale at that particular moment....so went with that one. And, later another one.

But, now it was nearly time to get another one. This'll be like the 3rd or 4th one that I'll have had in my living room since I moved here. Don't recall if there was a 1st one....but if I had, it was noisy...so it probably didn't stay long or get much use. But this would be the 3rd new one in the not quite 4 years that I've lived here. The first new one was quite expensive, and didn't seem to do much at all....except constantly tell me that it needed cleaning, but cleaning it showed no signs that it had done anything. The next one seemed to do better, but it was difficult to clean and had to be completely dry before it could be used again. The Kenmore units (and the Winix) are much easier to wash periodically and don't need to be completely dry to be put back into service. So, I kind of decided that when it came time to replace the filter in it...it would probably get replaced completely.

Got Another PowerSource 400

The other day, as I was rebuilding my 5 disk RAID array (which I mean to blog about someday)...for the umpteenth time. A storm came in one morning....this made me concerned about losing power and breaking my RAID in some bad state (it had happened once before). Now I did have the computer and its two disk arrays (and as it turned out monitor) on a Geeksquad 1285VA UPS. And, more serious now that I have quite a lot of data backed up onto this array using backuppc. Had gone through some scary periods where I thought I'd have to start over from scratch.

But, decided that may it was time to put it on a PowerSource 400, like my other two Linux servers. So, I went to my usual source....not available from there, but it listed 3 other sellers; two selling for substantially more than it used to sell for and one selling refurbished units. I went looking around online for other sources, including one other that I had considered as an alternative option (because they shipped using FedEx ground). Found that pretty much everybody that had listings for it, showed it as discontinued and not in stock. I check eBay, there were a few listings...but they were mostly of the store demo variety....seemed too risky for me, given past experiences.

So, I put it in my cart for the next time I was going to place a home bound Amazon Prime order (a PowerSource 400 is a heavy item, so even if I don't know when it'll arrive...I wouldn't want to be lugging it back from the UPS Store).

As it happened, the seller shipped it by UPS Basic, and the mail man showed up with it on the day that I stayed home sick....ran the bell twice and then left it on my door step (took me a while to unmask, get out of bed and find some pants). I didn't immediately set it up....but found somewhere to plug it in to at least charge. I was fully discharged, so it would take a while.

Later that evening a big storm came into the area, alert said golf ball sized hail....it sounded pretty intense out there. Just had to happen as I was trying to do the UPS swap. Discovered some oddities about how I have things run for power around my desk that I had forgotten about. But, I think it is all sorted out now. Though I may opt to move the monitor to another UPS at some later point.

Currently, monitor, server (orac) and the two raid boxes (2 drive - RAID1, 5 drive - RAID6) are on this 'new' PowerSource 400 and its reading 250-260W.

Annoyingly the literature doesn't give an estimate for loads >100W on the PowerSource 400....so I'm not really sure how much time I'll get at this...but hope its something. For comparison. 'lhaven' on its PowerSource 400 is reading 100-110W, and 'box' and the network gear (5 port gigabit switch and g access point) on its PowerSource 400 is reading 150-160W. I may pull the access point off the UPS at some later point in the future, since it is deprecated as I mainly use my Airport Extreme now...which is in another location and on a PowerSource 400.

That other PowerSource 400 is reading ~130W...it has 2 TiVo HDs, both with DVR Expanders, router, 16 port 10/100 switch, and the Airport Extreme. I was originally planning to add a RAID USB storage device to the Airport Extreme...though not sure now...that I have my work Mac Book Pro set up as a client to backuppc. (it also rarely comes how now.)

I don't think I have the courage to test how long any of my PowerSource 400s will actually last....but so far I've been happy with the ones that have endured the few extended outages I experienced last year.

I wonder what will be the successor to the PowerSource 400....and whether there'll be more PowerSource 400s, or what, in the future for me.

I got an Actifry

Link: http://www.t-falusa.com/All+Products/Cooking+Appliances/Deep+Fryers/Products/ActiFry/ActiFry.htm

Supposed to be a deep fryer without all that oil....which is what drew me to it.

Over the years, I have played around with deep frying.

When I first moved out, I lived in this neat apartment with a gas stove. And, I tried the open pan of oil and a basket method. And, I had reasonable success at deep frying stuff like shrimp chips and making fries. But, the fridge in the apartment wasn't so great....and dropping a pile of frosty frozen fries into a pot of hot oil isn't something one should do often....

And, being a gas stove....is made for quite the fireball. Good thing the place had high ceilings....

So, I decided that I might buy a deep fryer appliance at some point in the future, but it wasn't going to be in that apartment...since things were challenging enough running everything on the single 20 amp circuit that powered the entire 1 bedroom apartment. Would be impossible with the number of computers and home theatre components I have now.....not to mention all the appliances. Like no way would I go with turning off the TV, so I can microwave some popcorn...etc., now.

I forget why...but I think there was this craze of home buying around that time....but I eventually bought a home of my own....while the apartment was WWI era, the house I bought was a WWII build. It was better, but not much. Like only one 15amp kitchen counter plug circuit, which included the dishwasher...for some reason the washing machine, bathroom outlet and the side entrance outside light. That was fun when I got the high power motion activated spot light.... But, I got eventually got a deepfryer, I can't remember if it was from Eaton departure from Medicine Hat, or the demise of Woolworths (one of the locations that Walmart didn't convert).

It was nice, not as messy as open pot of oil and safer when using the second half of a bag of fries. But, it was this big awkward appliance that wasn't used often, and it was a pain filtering the oil and changing filters and replacing the oil. Plus it started getting hard to track down filters and stuff for it. This was before the Internet was what it is like today. I was doing online shopping by this point, but it was through Compuserve.
