shopamex and Duracell DPP-600HD

I have been meaning to get a Duracell DPP-600HD Powerpack for some time, as a backup power solution for my CPAP. That's the intended primary use. Though I'm sure I'd find other emergency applications for it....

While Amazon/Prime would be a cheaper faster way to get it...if I was doing cash out of pocket spending....since its ~$150+tax right now, and I've seen ~13x+tax. But, pulling the trigger on actually getting despite having been hit by a bunch of power outages recently....has been a problem. Other priorities and belt tightening.

Today, I saw that the 20% off shopAMEX promotion was going on again. So, I popped over for a look. And, saw that I had enough points to get a 600HD from a shopAMEX merchant. Now the price of the unit is much higher than Amazon.com, and there is a charge for standard delivery of it...so more expensive and slower. But, since its points it has a different feel to it.

While the 600HD was the first thing I checked via shopAMEX, it wasn't the thing that I was going to purchase at first. I remembered that I'm still looking for a new dresser to solve the disintegration of my old one and the piles of clean laundry cluttering up my bedroom floor. But, there weren't any suitable dressers available for the amount of points that I had left (and I didn't want to get an advance on points). Even though this means that I'll have to buy a dresser for much more...and the procrastination on it could mean I won't get one until next year....

So, not finding a suitable dresser under my points threshold....I went ahead and pulled the trigger on getting the Powerpack 600HD.

Honeywell HFS641P 16-Inch Remote Control Stand Fan

Link: http://www.amazon.com/Honeywell-HFS641P-16-Inch-Remote-Control/dp/B0001YM06C/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1241732334&sr=8-4

I had intended to buy a whole bunch of stuff from Amazon.com and having Prime deliver the stuff on the Tuesday that I was taking as an extra vacation day to sleep off Penguicon (though it wasn't necessary to sleep it off, because I had slept better than I can remember during the con).

But, I forgot all about this plan until it was too late to get free 2nd day shipping on my shopping cart. So, I pared it down to just this fan, because I wanted to have something different than the Lasko fan I had mentioned earlier.

Other than that, there isn't really a whole lot that I feel mentioning about this. The tilt adjust of the fan isn't wide enough to direct the air where I want. And, its annoying in that it defaults to off after loss of power. At least turns on at low and steps up, and it uses a 2 prong plug.

Because of the lack of adjust, it wasn't really suited for where I have the fan now....perhaps I will need to stop procrastinating on rearranging the bedroom. Alternatively, it might make a good fan for the living room...though I also need to do some rearranging in there....

Lasko 3540 Cyclone 20-Inch Pivoting Floor Fan with Remote Control

Link: http://www.amazon.com/Lasko-3540-Cyclone-20-Inch-Pivoting/dp/B001DNGRYG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1240443537&sr=8-1

On the weekend, I started finding it uncomfortably warm at night....particularly in the area under the headgear of my CPAP mask. I was resorting to turning the thermostat down.

It isn't that warm and humid yet....could get really expensive if I'm going to need to do this all summer. Temporarily I have inverted the sleep time temperature range on my set-back thermostat. Normally, its not as cool when I'm sleeping. Now its cooler than any other time.

While I was laying there waiting for the A/C to have its effect, the air purifier kicked itself to high and it made a slight improvement in comfort. Years ago when I lived in Medicine Hat, and didn't have air conditioning...I had floor fans (TurboAire) that I pointed at the ceiling to circulate air and make things tolerable. I had given them away a few moves ago....

But, I thought that maybe I should get something like it ASAP. I had been looking previously, but it wasn't a rush then...so I had put it off, because I wanted to find the same brand as I used to have....but it wasn't coming up in my internet searches (partly because I couldn't remember the brand name).....and because I was looking for a fan, rather than an 'air circulator'

However, now that I was in a hurry to get one....I looked to Amazon Prime to have it come my way on a particular day when I was going to be home for other reasons.

It was hard trying to find out if the fan would tilt to the full blow into ceiling orientation (a video review of the Lasko 3540 didn't show it tilting more than a few clicks up) But, after narrowing down the choices that were sold by Amazon.com and in stock, so that I would get it today. I settled on this one.

Part of the reason was the remote control and another part was that it seemed to have only a two-prong plug. And, I crossed my fingers that it would go to the straight up orientation.

Surround Air XJ-3800 Intelli-Pro Air Purifier

Link: http://www.surroundair.com/intellipro.htm

Back on July 1st, I wrote about a new air purifier I had acquired -- LINK.

That new air purifier has been great, and I've been wanting to get 2 or 3 more similar units to scatter around my condo. Namely in that it has been very effective at dealing with odors, and its odor sensor to make it come up when needed.

Yes, it is interesting how during the night, the air purifier will rev up now and then. Especially lately, where Aerophagia is a known side-effect of CPAP therapy. Though disturbing is that when I take a shower (and the bathroom exhaust fan is going, its on the same switch as the bathroom light....though I'm thinking that someday I'll see about separating the two)....I will come out and find it rev'd up.

Anyways...I original got it to help combat the odors that come up in my condo from my neighbors. Before it was like food odors, and the neighbor seemed a good cook....though sometimes the smell was something being burnt. But, the new neighbors seem to like excessive strong scents on stuff, and other neighbors like using gallons of lighter fluid when the grill.

One of the problem areas is near where there's a hole in my floor into the unit below....by the dryer. So, I've been thinking of getting another unit to put here.

After months of wanting to get one, I finally decided I couldn't put it off any longer and pulled the trigger on one. But, size is a factor for this location (and so was price) So, I went looking for possibly a smaller unit for this location. There was a smaller version of the same or similar air purifier, but it was almost as expensive as the size I had gotten....especially since the larger size is often on sale (as it was at this particular moment). The smaller one was on sale around black friday, but Sears didn't actually have any in stock (for online purchase)...and when Sears sent me the email that it was back in stock...the sale was over.

So, I expanded my search to include other models with similar features available through Amazon Prime. And, this was one of the units that seemed to fit the bill. Though it turned out to be much bigger than I expected. But, I set it up there and it seems to do the job.

Though so far no strong odors for it to deal with. Though it did react when I was making shake and bake.

It was interesting to note that it didn't react when I was taking my shower this morning, though the bedroom air purifier still did.

Nutriteam Countertop Water Distiller Stainless

Link: http://www.amazon.com/Nutriteam-Countertop-Water-Distiller-Stainless/dp/B000ANW7HQ

This is what FedEx brought me today.

Now, I had on occasion thought about getting a water distiller, to deal with the funky taste that tap water has sometimes...the PuR filter dispenser doesn't help with. But, wasn't sure about the expense, or the taste of distilled water.

I had considered getting water delivered to my condo....though not really sure where I'd put a water cooler or how to deal with getting the deliveries and doing the returns. Plus not really sure I could handle the expense...though it might address the question of whether I'm drinking enough water.

But, now that I need access to distilled water to fill the humidifier for my CPAP machine....this desire moved up to the front again.

I know you can buy distilled water from the grocery store, but I live a no-car lifestyle....and its 1.5 miles to the grocery store....and its up hill on the return journey. So, buying a gallon jug of distilled water isn't something I'd like to need to do on a regular basis....ideally, I go once a weekend...though I tend to skip weekends now and then due to weather....too windy, electrical storm, too hot/humid, too icy, too much snow to need to walk through. Plus not all weekends are work....home Wildcat football games kind of mess up traffic in the area.

So, I looked at Amazon Prime to solve this need. And, with that...there was only one choice.

I'm probably only going to use it supply my CPAP humidifier with distilled water. Because it takes so long to make distilled water, and is probably operationally expensive.... Though who knows...maybe when summer rolls around, I'll want to drink plain cold water again...and I might not have done anything to resolve the taste of tap water yet.

At least it isn't San Diego water. ;D

Winsome Wood End Table/Night Stand with Door and Shelf, Natural

Link: http://www.amazon.com/Winsome-Wood-Table-Night-Natural/dp/B000NPSHUC

I've been meaning to get a proper night stand for the other side of my bed for some time...but it wasn't until I became pressed for space due to the addition of a CPAP machine, that I got around to actually buying one.

So, now that I was rushed...I opted to order one online from Amazon.com, that was Amazon Prime eligible (so I could get it quickly) and that was affordable and appeared functional and somewhat attractive.

Well, this night stand turned out to be somewhat flimsier than I had expected, but I probably would've known if I had taken the time to read the reviews on the different options that I was considering. OTOH, there was only one other choice fitting the constraints and it was quite a big more expensive... though it was rated 3.5 stars from two reviews (versus 2.5 stars from 10 reviews).

The other problem with it was that the predrilled holes for the magnetic catch were too close together (so it was use one and not the other)...and the supplied screws popped out the other through the front....so I had to leave the catch loose.

Otherwise, it'll do.

PowerSource 400

Link: http://www.amazon.com/Xantrex-Technologies-852-0400-PowerSource-400-Watt/dp/B000E6LEI2

One of the items that UPS brought me today, was a PowerSource 400.

I already had one of these backing up my DSL modem, router, VoIP ATA and cordless phone base, which I had acquired last January....a month after the icepocalypse. And, I was happy with how well it worked, that I had been thinking of getting it to replace another UPS that had failed in my living room.

I still haven't replaced it, but I'll probably get another refurbished SmartUPS for there.

Anyways...having a UPS in the bedroom has been something that I've been thinking of...but the concern has been the noise a UPS makes when the power is out. I have heard of some people drilling holes from adjoining rooms to separate the bedroom from the UPS. But, it wasn't the kind of home improvement that I was interested in making at this point it time.

The idea for the UPS was to protect the pump for my Select Number bed. Even though it isn't supposed to deflate if it loses power, and it was plugged into a surge protector. I think the last 'failure' was connected to the way Westar seems to like kicking my power off for 2-3 seconds every now and then. Now that I have a medical device connected, I thought about filing whatever with them that I have something...but doubt that it would get me anything. The other thing is the aircleaner in my bedroom....it is a 'soft' power switch...so when it loses power, it stays off.

Now with the CPAP, the desire to have a UPS in the bedroom seemed to become that more urgent to me.

SmartUPS 1250VA is dead, long live my SmartUPS 1250VA UPS.

On (late morning) December 7th, there was a power glitch. Half my home theater went dead and there was this continuous beep.

The SmartUPS 1250VA UPS that was protecting that half seemed to have died horribly. Eventually, I was able to get it turn on and self-test by removing the bulk of the load from it. And, then a few minutes later I got the load running off of it again.

But, now the Replace Battery light was firmly on and it was do the replace battery beeping at regular intervals....during the day, in the evening while I'm trying to watch TV, in the middle of the night. :lalala:

I promptly set out to find replacement batteries for it....trying to figure out what source would to get them as fast as possible. First I had to determine what kind of battery to use. I recalled BatteryMart had listed the battery I wanted as "SLA-12V18-X2". Checking again, it seemed like a good price...except then there was the matter of shipping. Was Ground shipping acceptable (no). Was the premium of 3-day/2-day service affordable (not really).

The description said it replaces RBC7.

So, I went to Amazon.com to see if they had RBC7 available from them, and therefor available to be under Amazon Prime.

They did. And, that price was equivalent buying just the batteries....

ETA December 10th, 2008.

Well, unfortunately FedEx takes its time on showing up to make deliveries (though I guess UPS has been really late lately as well). So, I gave up waiting, because I had a meeting in the afternoon (2pm)....they showed up about 3pm. And, they wouldn't leave it without a signature. It came by 2 day service, instead of ground (where I had a signature release on file with them). So there was a door tag waiting for me, and I signed it so that I would get it today.

I did wait a little bit this morning, but they didn't show up in the time before my dentist appointment or the bit of time I lingered at home after my dentist appointment. They didn't actually show again until well after 2pm. I knew they had left the box on my door step. But, I had a meeting after work to go to. Though its a heavy box, and there hasn't been any problem in the past with stuff left on my door step for short periods.

Black Friday and Amazon.com

Black Friday started early because of Amazon.com.

I had take Wednesday off from work, because I needed to. And, I had thought that I might need to use it to wait for UPS to show up. But, UPS hadn't showed up when I got home Tuesday night...and somewhere after 7pm they showed up with my delivery.

I took delivery of a Ricardo Beverly Hills Capistrano Lite Free Wheelers 29-inch Two Compartment Vertical Pullman, Iris Purple. Should complement the 21-inch version that I got for my trip to OLF. Plus I had tweeted that my old pullman was starting to look sad....

And, while I was waiting at home on Tuesday, I happened by Amazon.com, and saw that they were starting Black Friday already. They had the Leatherman Micra for $12.99. Don't know what its usual Amazon.com price, but it was lowered for a limited time (right now it shows up as $16.46).

It was very tempting, but at first I was going to resist. Even though I could use some new tool gadget in my pocket since I was missing. But, a quick look at my shopping cart and my wishlist, and my planned purchase list. I saw that I had down to get another Tea Wand as a present, but I hadn't actually ordered a new one yet. So, I added that to my cart and put that order through.

2-day Prime delivery would put that sometime on Friday. I didn't really want to venture out to the mall on Black Friday, so I went ahead and ordered it.
