Yet another PowerSource 400

Link: http://www.xantrex.com/web/id/204/p/1/pt/30/product.asp

That's right, I got another one of these. Bring the total that I have in my home to 4.

I had originally been looking at ordering through another site, that had it for less than what Amazon.com charges (especially since at the time I was looking Amazon.com was out of stock)....but, of course, the other route would mean paying for shipping. Which was okay, because the site in question offered FedEx Home Delivery. Which means I don't have to be home for me to receive it.

Though getting stuff from Amazon.com w/Amazon Prime by UPS hasn't been bad....I can time the order to coincide with when I'll be home late that morning, so I can get it before going in to work. A little trickier with other deliveries by UPS, but usually manageable.

The other site + FedEx Home Delivery is in the same ballpark as getting it by Amazon Prime. But, when it came time to place the order, I saw that Amazon.com had the units in stock again. So, I opted to delay placing the order, so that I could get it delivered today.

However, Amazon choose to fulfill this portion of my order using FedEx 2Day Saver...which means that it was to get to me by 4:30pm today. Well, it didn't arrive until 4:50pm. But, the annoying thing was I had stay home all day waiting for when it would arrive. Because unlike FedEx Home Delivery, FedEx won't leave my package even though I've filled out the leave package form before....

So far I haven't had issue with FedEx Home Delivery packages left for me when I'm not home, even when I wasn't given the tracking number by the shipper.... like the delivery of the Buckwheat pillow I got yesterday.

The Amazon Prime order included other items, and the rest came separately by UPS...which showed up at a normal/reasonable morning time.

:**: Anyhoo....

This PowerSource 400 is slated to go where I had originally been planning to get another SmartUPS for my Home Theatre setup. Since I've been running this side with a regular UPS for years (in the post DLP acq...a CyberPowerSystems 1500AVR-HO and now a GeekSquad 1285)....I decided that a PowerSource 400 would likely serve me just fine in this location for less than another SmartUPS would be.

The GeekSquad 1285 would move to the back and run 'box', which has been running off another computer's UPS ever since its UPS died. Rather than to replace the failing CPS700AVR that backs up 'orac'.

Hopefully the PowerSource 400 will be adequate and giving long runtimes to the stuff on this side of the HT rack. Though I'm wonder if I shouldn't have measured things first. It would've been adequate for when it was ReplayTVs and some network equipment (cable modem, switch, router). But, the ReplayTVs have been retired, and now it'll be 3 TiVo HD's with external drives (currently just 2, but I see a 3rd in the not too distant future)....and some additional networking equipment.

And perhaps the media player and DVI switcher, I knew the media player wasn't protected...but was caught off guard that the DVI switcher isn't.

Hmmm, based on figures I have from google searches...3 might be cutting it close (especially with all the other stuff) if I want a reasonable runtime...perhaps I'll leave one of the TiVo HD + drive setups on the left side. Though I think I'll slate the 3rd one for there. Since I think a little cleanup of the nest of cabling might be in order.... :hmm:

Another Fan

Link: http://www.amazon.com/Lasko-52-Oscillating-Pedestal-Fan/dp/B000RMJANY

I got the Lasko 52" Oscillating Pedestal Fan that I had talked about earlier. I was on Amazon.com yesterday, when I discovered that something I had been waiting weeks to hear about was on its way by UPS. And, UPS tracking showed that it would arrive today. Plus I had a Physical Therapy appointment. So, after some thought, I decided to pull the trigger on it.

I paid an extra $3.99 for the 1 day delivery upgrade from Amazon Prime, to make it arrive today.

Nothing really much to say about the fan, except that it looks like it will definitely work much better, than the 42" one, next to my bed. So far it hasn't been uncomfortable enough to resort to using an additional fan to be comfortable with my CPAP setup to use the 42" fan...so in actual use I don't know how either compare.

Assembly was its usual snap, noticed the base is a bit more weighted. Which I guess is necessary due to the pole and increased concentration of mass at the top. The remote looks very much like the Lasko 42", except instead of an ION button, it has a moon (sleep button). Most of the codes are the same, but the sleep button doesn't seem to do anything to the Lasko 42" while the ION button toggles the sleep light, but doesn't actually seem to do anything, on the 52".

The remotes don't affect the Lasko 3540 Floor Fan, which is good since that's the main fan helping to make things comfortable in my bedroom.

Some quirks...well, there's the usual Lasko makes lots of beeping. But, what threw me at first was this fan didn't include batteries for the remote. Also interesting is that 'sleep' mode, sets the timer to 6 hours. And, it can't be changed. The fan also seems to be in a lower mode than low. I would've preferred the whole 7.5 hour maximum countdown if it was going to force a timer setting. Since when I do use timer, that's usually what I set....

So, the Lasko 42" has moved into my livingroom. It is currently up front, hopefully the TiVo remote conflict with Honeywell fan is just a quirk of the Honeywell and things will work. ... even though they both fans uses a subset of the same codes. I'm leaving the Honeywell at the back of the room, mainly because I haven't yet decided where I'm going to move it. I guess if the conflict problem comes true...the Lasko will move to the back...and I'll have to find a new home for the Honeywell sooner than I intend to.

I kind of have an idea of where it could go, but I need to rearrange/dispose of some clutter.

Doing fan shuffle

I have picked up another fan....using Amazon Prime. Strange how lately after I order an item, Amazon is suddenly out of the item and projecting 1-2 months before they'll have it again. Makes it hard to get another immediately after if I find that I like it (or love it....wouldn't mind having another one or two PowerSource 400's)

Anyways...had a AM doctor appointment last Thursday, so I quickly ordered a few new items using Amazon Prime to arrive later that morning. The main item being Lasko 42" Wind Curve Platinum. I had originally wanted the Lasko 52" Oscillating Pedestal Fan, but it went out of stock by the time I was ready to place the order....with a projected 1-2 months before it'll be in stock again. In retrospect, it might have been more useful for my application.

This morning, I was thinking about the bad nights I had had lately. One was waking up wet from sweat. I had intended to have a second more direct fan for my bedroom, but the Honeywell proved to be too noisy for sleeping use, even on its lowest setting.

So, I set about to find a spot in my bedroom where the Lasko fan would go. Ideally I wanted to rearrange the furniture of my bedroom, but the UPS fiasco of July 3rd...threw a wrench into my plan to maybe take a stab at doing it this long weekend. I may just have to burn some vacation time to get it done. Eventually, I decided the stop next to my bed is currently occupied by floor lamp...which wasn't plugged in (because I needed the outlet for CPAP stuff) and I haven't used. So I moved it into storage.

The fan is a little low standing along side my bed, hence the thinking that the 52" might have worked better. Though I knew I needed tall, so the normal 33" ones would definitely not have worked (I had tower fans in Dublin, OH, but I didn't bring them in move because there were close to worn out...and I ran out of space on moving truck.) A quick test and it seems that it should do the job more than adequately, perhaps too well (perhaps when I rearrange the bedroom it won't be placed so close to the bed).... However, during the testing, I discovered that the fan's remote conflicted and triggered strange behavior in the Honeywell fan.

I had been meaning to have a fan in the living room, and had intended the Honeywell fan to initially take that spot. Except that there was stuff in the spot that I was considering for it. So, today was finally the day to toss clear that spot. The biggest item being the box for my Dell Dimension XPS computer (circa 1993). I decided to toss it. Even though the computer will likely be around for a few more years, I hope that I won't have to move before I get around to replacing it.....

The GigE upgrade

On Monday before the rain, I had placed an order on Amazon.com. The large part of the order were the pieces to complete the upgrade to GigE.

The GigE project started when I replaced a 5-port switch that had a bad port. Which was causing me issues because it was either between wireless access point or wired connection for work laptop. Sure I could connect by wireless with the work laptop, but for transferring big files...wired is faster.

That upgrade made no improvement in speed (at least none that I'm aware of...I never did have cause to connect work laptop since that upgrade...so I don't know if the work laptop does GigE...but its a MacBook Pro, so it should, right?)

So, to complete things, I got a 2 more 5 port switches and an 8 port switch. Two of the switch hops are Linksys WRT54GS routers, and the far end is an 8-port 10/100 switch.

As I was plotting how to make the upgrade, it occurred to me that the 5 port switches aren't replacing the routers...so I'm going to need some patch cables. And, the other day I was thinking I needed to stock up on some, because I couldn't find any. Though I'm sure I had some pre-move that I probably haven't unpacked yet. As I was going around looking for cables...I came across some 7ft and 14ft cables, that I must've picked up the last time I was ordering parts (BuyExtras.com)....might be time to stock up again.

So I started the upgrade....first the living room router. I put the 5-port in place. Moved the cable that links router to the 16-port 10/100 switch up. Then ran cable from GigE switch to router. Moved other cable in router to GigE switch (the overhead Cat5 to where my main desktop is...and the first GigE switch.) Success, one port showing GigE link. The other two ports on the router go to TiVo's....they can stay....

I then moved on to moving stuff around at the other router. I first moved the one room cable that wasn't active to the GigE switch and connected GigE switch to that port. And, moved the other two room cables over. I also moved the wireless access point in this room onto the GigE switch (could've gone on the router...doesn't really matter). It was mainly so that it would be on the same UPS as my networking equipment...so some chance things would work in an extended outage. It would mainly be things that were already working before the outage, since DHCP server isn't on a long running UPS (yet). I checked for green light (to show GigE)....there weren't any....sad.... :`( Seems to mean that building wiring can't support the speed?

Oh wait...I think I was short one cable move at the living room router. Sure that its...the room jack is connected to 16-port switch. Get a longer cable (14')...and connect it up. Presto now two green lights (at switch in living room).

Last but not least....upgrade the 8-port switch. First moved wall jack to it and connection from 'lhaven'. Trying not to lose my IRC sessions. And, then move the rest. 2 Green lights. 'orac' is now 1000BaseT full duplex.

Before I was able to get about ~99Mbps with iperf between 'orac' and 'tardis'. Now with iperf...I'm finding I can get ~190Mbps going 'tardis'->'orac'. And, ~300Mbps going 'orac'->'tardis'. Part is likely that Windows isn't tuned for the speed. I did do the tweaking to maximum broadband speed.... Linux is probably just better by default. There might also be the hardware differences. 'tardis' is a P4-3.2GHz w/HT box and 'orac' is a Core 2 Quad 2.4GHz. 'tardis' is Windows XP and a pretty busy machine....while 'orac' spends most of its time just running boinc WUs on all 4 cores. Etc.

Now what am I going to do?

Amazon Video on Demand in HD & L&O: Criminal Intent

I screwed up. Somehow I thought I already had a season's pass for Law & Order: Criminal Intent. But, I was looking around on my TiVo HD's...and found no recordings. Not sure why I didn't notice sooner, perhaps because I did have a season's pass for In Plain Sight and my check list for the day was for both these shows....

Anyways...I sadly missed the first 3 episodes of the season. After some thought, and not seeing it on Hulu...I decided to just go for it and order the episodes up using Amazon's Video on Demand service. I also got the HD versions.

I put the order in on my TiVo HD and there were there waiting for me this morning. Kind of sad that the episode information wasn't part of the info of the on demand download....but since I ordered them in order, I guess the bottom-up would be the right order.

Now I'm caught up. Haven't seen the 4th episode yet....but that'll be on my TiVo for later...

Today was Amazon Kindle 2 Day

Though it wasn't the day that my Amazon Kindle 2 arrived...that arrived a day early. But, I did start loading it up with material to read. The first purchased item was a subscription to Reader's Digest.

I had let my print subscription go years ago, because it was hard to keep up....I have too many magazines and not enough time, so I could probably stand to lose a few more here and there. But, it was interesting reading Reader's Digest again...on the Kindle. Might look at other subscriptions, though not really sure what else I would want that is currently available.

Also not sure where I stand on books. I haven't been reading much in a very long time, but I've been meaning to get back into things....I just don't know where to begin now.

UPS Hell Update & Amazon Kindle 2

Yeah....I finally have a UPS for what I ordered last Wednesday. I was kind of surprised when I checked the order status at Staples.com, and found that they had sent the reordered UPS also by UPS. Guess they were trusting that the lost one was a fluke, and wasn't going to happen again.

Fortunately, it arrived.

Also among the UPS deliveries today, was my Amazon Kindle 2.

I haven't opened the box for the UPS yet, but I did open the Kindle package. Kind of neat that the quick setup 'sheet' isn't on the plastic that protects the screen but saved into the screen itself.

However, the USB power cord was kind of annoying. First its yet another unique USB plug that I have to deal with, guess I'll put another one in my Amazon.com shopping cart for future purchase. Second the orientation was backwards from what I expected. There's an AmazonKindle logo on what appeared to be the top, and the curved corners were opposite this side...so it seemed that this was the top for plugging it in. But, it wasn't.

I thumbed part way through the user's guide, and then added some stickers to it (a StuffBak label) and put it into its cover and then left it to continue charging.

Thursday is Kindle 2 Day.

On Valentines Day, I had pre-ordered myself the Kindle 2. It projected a delivery date of February 26th, based on Amazon Prime Delivery. So, last Friday, I submitted the time off request to take February 26th off.

Though Amazon has apparently started shipping the Kindle 2 today...so Amazon Prime makes delivery for Wednesday the 25th instead.

Guess I'll find something else to occupy my time on Thursday now.

Though I might not get to do all that much with the Kindle 2 the first night with it.... :|

UPS Hell Squared

This is an update to "UPS Hell", where it now involves both kinds of UPS.

I mentioned that I first looked at free shipping by Amazon.com to get me the UPS, they were estimating that I would get it on Wednesday (Feb 25)....and that seemed too far away to get a UPS sent to me. So, I turned to Staples.com. And, they had some UPSs that could be shipping in (as few as) 1 Business Day. The first one I picked projected an estimated delivery of Feb 23, so I went with my second choice which had a delivery date of Friday (Feb 20).

Well, eventually order status reported that the order would be coming by UPS with an expected delivery date of Friday (Feb 20). I waited for UPS to show up, and he did...but no UPS among his deliveries that day. But, the tracking showed it was out for delivery on the 20th.

I then waited this morning (Monday - Feb 23) for UPS to show up, and he did....but still no UPS among his deliveries. UPS tracking still shows the "Out For Delivery" status at 7:26am of Feb 20th. I called UPS and Staples trying to find out where my UPS was. Finally sent of an email to Staples. Eventually that resulted in a message being left for me saying that if I didn't get it by 5pm, to give them another call.

I came home, and no sign of attempted delivery and no update in UPS tracking, etc. So, I called Staples. They said there was a note on my order that if I hadn't received order by 3pm that they would resend the order.

Eventually, I decided to have them go ahead and do this. Now my new estimated delivery of the UPS is between 9 and 10am on Wednesday (Feb 25).

Hmmm, so much for being in a hurry for the new UPS, I guess.

Though this just annoys me that much more...since Amazon.com would've been for an APC BR1500LCD, while I ordered a CyberPower CP1285AVRLCD from Staples.com based on the expectation that I would have it before last weekend. My first choice from Staples.com for an APC BX1300LCD.

UPS Hell

Today, I came home and found my Staples delivery waiting by my front door. It was the APC Back-UPS ES Series 550VA UPS (BE550R), along with 3 cases of water (which I had added to pad the order to be over $50).

But, when I came in...things were strangely quiet, or rather I was hearing sounds that I wasn't accustom to hearing. My main computer wasn't on....its UPS, a Belkin F6C1500-TW-RK, was off with a red light. Strange.... I wouldn't expect this UPS to be down. Sure its out of warranty now, but I had replaced its battery back in August.

I restarted the UPS and waited for everything to be working again, etc. And, then I triggered a 10-second self-test. Wham....it went down instantly. Guess the UPS is bad and needs to be replaced.

Of course, now the President's Day sale is over....and that 1500VA UPS that I was on the fence on getting....that was $30 off and free shipping. Wasn't on sale now. So, I went looking around on line to see what UPS I could get quickly, of sufficient VA's. The load meter on the Belkin is around 33%, so the replacement I got didn't have to be the full 1500VAs. Though it was still preferable.

At first I looked at Amazon.com, but Amazon Prime was only going to get me free ground shipping on the UPS. And, they put ETA at Feb 25th. I didn't really want to wait that long....so it occurred to me that I should check Staples again.

Amazon.com had a 1500VA UPS for under $200, while with Staples I would be looking at 1285/1300 VA UPS for under $200. And, while the Amazon.com one would be APC, and the Staples would be CyberPower. I opted to get a 1285VA Cyberpower from Staples, since they said I could get it on February 20th.

And, just as I was about to finalize the order, I remembered that I had a $10 off >$100 coupon that I looked at using on Monday...but didn't think of what I had that much to use it on....but now I did. So, now I'm waiting for a Cyberpower 1285VA UPS to appear.

Haven't decided when I'll put the 550VA UPS into service. The thing I want to put on it, isn't in place yet and I don't feel like dealing with that right now.

Now instead of subjecting some poor random forum to a long rambling thought, I will try to consolidate those things into this blog where they can be more easily ignored profess to be collected thoughts from my mind.
