And, it almost didn't regenerate in time....
First it seems my first TiVo HD is nearing its end. With it constantly locking up, and other problems that started ... but the moment had been prepared for.... With the Premiere Elite that I had gotten recently.... Just need to work on watching or moving the shows that are in it. Then it would free up the My DVR Expander to add to the Premiere Elite. And, since I have lifetime service for it...I suppose I would look into a Weaknees upgrade for it. But, I'll stay with eventually returning the cable cards for it.
And, now the end of my Samsung HLN4365W1X seems to have come. It came to me on May 30th, 2004, and it started having its latest issue on Sep 21st, 2012. Guess just over 8 years. I kind of knew it wasn't going to last forever. Since, it had consumables (bulbs) and mechanical components (cooling fans & color wheel).... and eventually I would like to upgrade.
I had replaced the bulb a couple of times....getting about 3.5 years.... Which is kind of sad, since I had gotten the 3 year extended warranty, because of the stories of premature bulb failures in this model. Now, its hard to tell what's wrong...the internet is kind of mixed on matching my symptoms with what might be wrong. But, I suspect the Ballast. It'll eventually come up, but it makes a lot of noise...and then it can't be turned off. It did settle down on Saturday so I could watch my Doctor Who...so I held off a bit on pulling the trigger to replace it, though I probably shouldn't have. I did some research on whether this was something I could fix myself, but in the end decided that it wasn't worth the hassle given the price of what a new TV is and how much sooner I'd get it. Just means, the other thing I was wanting to get this year will have to wait another year. Though its starting to look a lot like Apple isn't going to come out with anything new this year anyways.
I kind of had envisioned someday getting an LED TV in 1080p, and 50" that fits into my stand....perhaps even 3D.
The stand is just wide enough to accomodate a 50" providing the bezel isn't too wide. But, when that DLP came out, I wasn't ready to make that kind of leap. And, until recently, LCD/LED displays are either like 46/47" or 55"....the 50" size seemed to only be Plasmas.
And, I had considered whether it would be so bad to get a Plasma....though I think I want to not worry about when my next display is going to be for a while. So, LED/LCD TV is probably what I'll have to stay with.
Wonder if I can get something delivered next Saturday....
Zen has a typical number of rear USB ports.... 6 Guess that's normal. It's the number of USB ports on the back of TARDIS (circa 2003 Dell Dimension XPS Gen 2), and it's the number of USB ports on the back of the Dell Precision T1500 I got at work.
Though they differ on front USB ports....Zen has 2 with the media bay and one behind the front connector door. TARDIS had 2 behind a little door (somewhere along the way, one of the connectors had gotten busted). The computer at work has 4 open ports on the front.
But, TARDIS has PS/2 ports for keyboard and mouse (and surprisingly so does the Dell Precision T1500 at work, though it shipped with USB keyboard and mouse). The off-lease Lenovo that is gumby was my first desktop to be without PS/2 ports, someday I'll get a PS2/USB KVM and see if that works better.
Anyhoo....in the separation and cleanup....I ended up with one 7 port USB 2.0 hub that I was going to use on Zen. It is the kind with two ports on top for USB sticks and 5 on the edge (4 on a long edge and 1 on the short edge....upstream port and power on the other short edge). And, then I started carefully figuring out what I would use the rear USB ports for.
Two were immediately taken by the keyboard and mouse. One would be for the UPS and one for that 7 port USB 2.0 hub. Webcam would probably go on rear too.... And, the last went to the Sans Digital TR2UT that I use for local backups (but since Windows Backup was kind of a disappointment, I might buy a different external that comes bundled with something better....the Retrospect software that came with my now-dead Iomega was better.... Wonder if I'll go USB 3.0 or Firewire, either will free up one of the precious USB2.0 ports on the back. Though have been thinking of getting a USB 2.0 card to get more USB 2.0 ports on the back.
Now on the USB 2.0 hub, I've plugged in 5 things already...so it was also getting crowded....so I decided I should plan on getting one more hub for Zen.
I was shopping on Thinkgeek on New Year's day....to see what kind of sales they had, plus I had gotten email that the USB Doomsday Device Hub was back in stock (and a while back had gotten email that the KeyTool Keyring Multi-tool was back in stock)...so I thought I should order these things. I also got the USB 7 Port Hub with Power Switches, which I had been planning to get for gumby. Though not sure its for connecting actual USB devices, or for stuff that charges from USB ports....the two front ports on gumby and the two front ports on box are full of things for the only purpose of charging things. I'm also using a rear port on box for charging....
Early on I had plugged the 7 port USB 2.0 hub into my UPS...(other things on the UPS are Zen, the TR2UT, 5 port switch, and 802.11g AP). Decided to leave the 7 port hub on the UPS, though may need to review what I have connected to which hub now. But the 7 port hub is downstream from the 24 port hub. Guess if I move the TR2UT, both hubs can be directly attached... So far I've only moved the LabelWriter 400 and DT3500 SmartCard reader to the 24 port hub. I put the 24 port hub on the far left corner of desk....keeping 7 port next to Zen on the right side. Had to find a longer mini-USB cable than the one supplied with the 24 port hub to make this work. Fortunately, I have lots now that I've transitioned from phones that used mini USB plugs for power to phones that use micro USB plugs. I think I need a few more of the micro USB cables....
Word is that they are going to finally standardize cell phone chargers this year....though I'm sure they are going to come up with a standard that is completely different and incompatible to what everybody is currently using, just so that everybody will have to buy a bunch of new something....
Meanwhile...I have 2 of the 3 front USB ports spoken for....though if I get that USB card to get more rear ports, I may revise things. But, the plan is one will get a permanently inserted USB drive for ReadyBoost and the other is for a bluetooth adapter. Keeping the covered one for non-permanent activity.
This scheme only works as long as I don't move my iPod Nano and iPhone 3G from TARDIS. Though I should, since I've moved iTunes over...along with my AppleTV. And, my podcast subscriptions are done here now. Doesn't affect the iPhone 3G that much, because I had stopped using it for podcasts...and since I upgraded to 4.x its been kind of slow. Plus service-less iPhone 3G is kind of klunky in other parts.... may get an iPod Touch someday...
But, I should get back to using the iPod Nano, so I should move it to sync'ng from Zen.
Now, I had originally set them up connected to a USB hub, despite Apple saying I shouldn't....but eventually iTunes seemed to have evolved to enforce this. So, I had to switch to connecting my iPhone directly to TARDIS to sync....and I had stopped using the Nano. Currently both are connected to rear ports on TARDIS, because they are available now. But, where will they go on Zen?
I haven't used my AppleTV in a while, but I've been meaning to sit down and use it....and I sense with the coming holidays that I might have time to sit down and do some marathon watching of stuff.
So, I've been meaning to let the AppleTV upgrade to the latest 3.0.1, and later patchstick and get Boxee working on it again.
And, that's what I'm doing right now.
So far the procedure given has been going fine. And, once done....it'll just be a quick see that I can access my account in Boxee and be done. Since I have too much other stuff that I need to be doing today
Was going through my photo collection and saw that it had been over two years since I last snapped a shot of "My Mess". So, here's what it looks like today:
So, I have been falling behind on podcasts for some time...
Originally, I was using TiVo Desktop Plus to convert from iTunes and push out to my TiVo HD. But, it wasn't working too reliably....so it was one of the reasons I pulled the trigger on getting an AppleTV.
But, I pretty much only use the AppleTV for Boxee/Hulu, so I fell even more behind on my podcasts.
Getting the iPhone 3G hasn't helped...I changed all my subscriptions from HD to non-HD so that as many as possible would sync over to it. But, its been a process of cutting back the list as I run out of space on the iPhone. And, not make much progress.
Aside from battery life on the iPhone is dismal, for just standby and getting email....I keep forget to get regular earphones for it...and usually not somewhere where I can have it play through speaker. I tried bluetooth headphones, but the audio lag was annoying.
So, along the way....plus I had acquired a few iPod related gadgets that didn't work with my iPhone 3G (because the Otterbox Defender case makes it too big to work, and I like having the iPhone in its case....what rain?) So, I got to thinking about getting an iPod again....and decided that the iPod Nano might be the solution for me.
I decided that since new models typically appear in September, that I would wait to see it and get one then.

I haven't used Boxee/Hulu/AppleTV in a long time, but today I was catching up on some TV shows....and found that I didn't get all of Fringe, because Idol had run long
So, after calming down....I decided to see what the state of Hulu on my AppleTV was. Guess the Boxee/Hulu issue had gotten straightened out, and I was able to watch the episode...more or less.
It paused now and then while playing....guess DSL isn't the way to do much of anything in streaming video. Wonder if I should change the default gateway of my AppleTV to use Cox HSI?
Though it wasn't the day that my Amazon Kindle 2 arrived...that arrived a day early. But, I did start loading it up with material to read. The first purchased item was a subscription to Reader's Digest.
I had let my print subscription go years ago, because it was hard to keep up....I have too many magazines and not enough time, so I could probably stand to lose a few more here and there. But, it was interesting reading Reader's Digest again...on the Kindle. Might look at other subscriptions, though not really sure what else I would want that is currently available.
Also not sure where I stand on books. I haven't been reading much in a very long time, but I've been meaning to get back into things....I just don't know where to begin now.

For some reason NBC was on the fritz on Wednesday.....so all my TiVo HD recordings were bad/incomplete. So, I had to seek out alternative ways to get Knight Rider, Life and Law & Order.
The first two I tracked down using Boxee and Hulu, on my AppleTV. Things went okay, the only gripe is that if you hit the Menu button while watching a Hulu program, it goes back...but there's no button the on AppleTV remote to get back to the program (which is continuing to play in the background). Pressing play starts it all over again.
Menu is the button on the AppleTV remote that selects its input on my Zektor HDVI5 switcher. The other annoying
problemhabit, of course, is that I keep picking up my TiVo remote and pressing the skip button and others while watching programming not on the TiVo. And, then had to pop over to the TiVo to make sure I didn't mess anything up.
Law & Order on the other hand wasn't available via Hulu (or on NBC's site). For this I resorted to using Amazon's Video on Demand service to download the show to my TiVo HD. After doing some fiddling to figure out why it wouldn't let me using my second TiVo HD, when it says I'm allowed up to 2 TiVo's to be associated with my account. But, it turned out that there was a sync problem between Amazon.com and TiVo.com, TiVo said both my TiVo's were enabled for Video on Demand, but Amazon.com was only seeing my first TiVo.....
Also the other day I had gotten my new Visa card, and going to various sites to update my information. Turns out you can only edit/update a credit card online, on numerous sites including Amazon.com, if the account number doesn't change...have to remove and then add new card. What then happens is that things that were associated with the card, just go away... IE: a subscription in my paypal account was canceled, instead of asking me to reassociate it or something. The "are you sure" dialog shouldn't count as the warning.
In Amazon.com's case it cleared my 1-click settings, which was minor....since I happened to have the issue where Amazon.com and TiVo.com were out of sync. I opted to associate my American Express card as my 1-click. Since, I had recently changed to associating my Visa card with Apple iTunes....
Later I saw that Law & Order is also available on iTunes...wonder if that would've been in HD? Evidently not.... L&O:SVU and L&O:CI are available as HD downloads, but not L&O....strange. Though I don't now if I would've spent the extra $1 for HD for L&O. L&O:CI yes, L&O probably not.
Following the replacement of batteries in my SmartUPS 1250VA UPS, my TiVo HD failed to boot properly...and I didn't notice until CSI was more than half over, that it wasn't recording....
I thought to myself on how I might recover from this, and decided that Boxee would come to the rescue again.
So, I watched other shows last night and this evening I set out to watch the missed episode (19 Down).
Had some issues with the AppleTV. First the remote wasn't selecting the input on my Zektor DVI5. For some reason the remote changes its code now and then. This the second time this has happened. Then the AppleTV wasn't cooperating. Menu with no text. This has been happening on occasion since the update the 2.3 and the latest of the launcher & boxee.
I had to restart the AppleTV a few times, and I re-updated the software....even though the versions haven't changed.
That was enough to get into Boxee and make my way to watching CSI.
It went pretty good.
Now back to my TiVo HD for regular recordings....starting with Eleventh Hour
Today I tried out Hulu.
Because last night, the schedule bumped Life to about 3:40am. My TiVo HD didn't get it, because it apparently needed to do some kind of maintenance reboot around 3am....only it got stuck, at the just a few more moments or something like that screen.
I had to reboot it hard during lunch when I found it that way. (I was home at lunch today, because I was still un-numbing from a dentist appointment)
I noticed the absence of shows recorded last night, and eventually concluded that only one show was actually missed. Life.
So, I was thinking where can I find the missed episode... I suppose with patience, I could get somebody to send it to me on my ReplayTV. Though it would only be SD. But, then I was reading my twitter feed of the impending new release of Boxee. (It is hard to write this blog post with twitter [TwitterFox] updates popping up and stealing focus, and not giving it back)
The NetFlix feature sounds nice, but it isn't available in the AppleTV version....so I'll stick to waiting for that from TiVo.
But, it did talk of improvements with its Hulu support...and I decided it was time to check that out. First I quickly popped over to the site to see whether it would be possible to get the missed episode of Life. Then it was off to work, with it as something to try when I get back home.
Well, it turned out to be a reasonable experience. It was 16x9, not as good as HD. And, the commercials were tolerable (and interesting and relevance). It only paused once (not including when I hit pause to answer the door and get my food delivery (I think she was cute, but I just took my food....)
Now I know what to do the next time my TiVo or cable company let's me down, eh?
