Woot : Oreck XL Professional Air Purifier

Link: http://www.woot.com/Blog/BlogEntry.aspx?BlogEntryId=3189

Back on October 25th, there was a woot-off. I was new to Woot. Only finally signed up a few days earlier. But, as I was watching stuff go by this day....I saw this Oreck XL Professional Air Purifier.

Some might argue it wasn't necessarily the best price that could be had at that instant. But, I knew I wanted at least another one...and the price was lower than what I had paid for my previous remanufactured unit. And, they didn't seem to be available anymore directly from the Oreck site. So, I snapped one up.

But, after it arrived I put the box aside and eventually forgot about it. During the icestorm power outage on December 11th, I moved it to another room as I was using the space as compact area away from all outside walls to huddle for warmth.

In the post....I've been inside my Linux server (which is slowing coming back), and it sure was dusty inside. After blowing all that dust back into the air....it occurred to me that I had this air purifier that I should set up in this room. It was one of the places that I had intended to get one for.

So, I cleared a spot on my old printer table (had envisioned getting more furniture into the room, though it might be a while off before I get around to that....) And, it is off and running.

Home Air Quality Enhancers Update

Guess I haven't blogged about my recent air quality enhancement related purchases....

But, first I need to import my Outlook folders into Thunderbird so I can remember when I did these things....ran into some trouble..."Unable to save your message as draft. Error writing temporary file." After a few google searches, I found that the conflict was my AntiVirus software...so turning for Norton AV's autoprotect has it working....

Back in June, I ordered the Pure-Ion Advanced Air Purifier from Brookstone, just before leaving for my brother's wedding...with the anticipation that it would arrive on the later on the day of my return, so I should be home to receive it. Unfortunately, the flight(s) didn't go as planned and I didn't get back until the wee hours the next day.

Turned out the idea of putting the filter modules in the dishwasher wasn't all that practical. The rack tines prevent them from sitting low, they take up a lot more space than I wanted. Plus I don't wash my dishes before putting them in the dishwasher, so I run the risk coating the filters with food particles. Guess I'll just use the Oreck Assail-A-Cell cleaner on them when more than a simple rinse isn't enough.

As for my other experiences....the clean light comes on quite often, and I don't see visible accumulation of dust. Not sure it is doing anything. Wonder if making the cells dishwasher safe reduces their effectiveness in being charged to capture dust? Worse, the oscillate function has broken on it. It will now often just go in a (full) circle, and then randomly stop turning at all. I coaxed it to work a big longer so that it is in the 'straight' orientation and now don't use the function. :**:

The model seemed to have gotten redesigned shortly after I purchased it....don't know if it is better or not, but it does have a larger surface area..... :..(

Next, I've occasionally checking out the woot.com site....then one day (October 25th) they were having a woot off, and I was seeing stuff that I might actually want...so I signed up for an account that day. And, then later that day....they had Oreck XL Professional Air Purifier. I had been thinking of getting another one or two, though the Oreck site seemed out of refurbished units and I don't have a spot cleared for it yet. Like the bedroom that is still packed full of boxes from when I moved in, I have plans to actually make use more than just a few clear spots where I put shelves and such.....or next to the other computers. Anyways...when I saw this on woot.com, I went for it. Some day I'll open the box and set it up.

Dyson DC18 Slim

Link: http://www.dyson.com/range/feature_frame.asp?model=DC18-ALLFLOORS&sinavtype=menu

Oh yeah...before I got to building the CD Storage Rack, I finally got around to assembling my new Dyson DC18 Slim Vacuum Cleaner. It was also a Columbus Day item.

I did a quick run of it...and it was amazing how much stuff it pulled up. Didn't expect to see more construction dust, though it choked my old vacuum cleaner to death...so maybe not losing suction got to the stuff that the old vacuum cleaner didn't get.

Think I need some of its accessories to get to those hard to reach spots. Wonder about getting an extension cord for it....so I can get to the far corner of the living room (without using the living room circuit.. :? )

Columbus Day 2007

Today, is Columbus Day. AKA Canadian Thanksgiving.

I took today off from work as my discretionary holiday (AKA floating holiday, use it or lose it holiday, etc.), so that I could do the Canadian thing....as well as do some stuff I've been wanting to do around my home and wait for some deliveries.

First the deliveries. I mentioned that I had something that was attempted on Wednesday, when I wasn't home, that I had them defer delivery until today. Well, that didn't quite work out. It was shipped in two boxes, but only one of them arrived today....the one labeled "2 of 2". Hopefully they'll find the other one and complete its delivery today. The other item I had delivered today is a Dyson DC18 Slim. I don't feel like opening that box today, so it might be a while before I get around to using it to vacuum.

Why?

The thing I've been meaning to do around the home is hang some new curtains. A while back the landlord turned an area outside into a parking lot, and the lights for the lot shine against my condo...namely right against my bedroom window. So, I started looking for better light blocking drapes...though it would take a while before the order would arrive, so I resorted to foiling my windows.

The foiling worked really well, perhaps too well. I could sleep all day.... and I found that my bedroom was much cooler. And, since summer was coming, I opted to leave the foil up. Plus I didn't own the condo yet, so I put off drilling holes and hanging drapes. But, now that it is cooling down and there might actually be cause to open windows...it was time to take action. Plus the foiling seemed to prevent my atomic clock from syncing.

Though I have now discovered that it wasn't the case. Evidently my (Oreck) electronic aircleaner is throwing off stray RF that jams reception. I think I got the aircleaner a bit before I did the foiling, but I never looked at the clock until afterwards. Guess I'll find somewhere else to put it.

The drapes might not work out though. They aren't quite wide enough, a little long (so I had to move my dresser), and they don't seem dark enough... So, it is possible I might be ordering new drapes again. At least when I do, I'll have the option to get another rod and hang these drapes in the other bedroom. Which I plan to use as soon as I clear some clutter.

Guess I'll find out how well they work tonight....

Delivery Wednesday

Today, was kind of a day that I got a lot of deliveries...

First was when UPS was going to delivery a CD rack that I had purchased, I wasn't home...but as it turned out my Wednesday morning meeting was canceled...so I could've been home to wait for it. But, either they would leave the ~101lb package on my doorstep or they would leave a notice and try again later. They went for the latter, so I went online and directed them to defer redelivery until Monday when I'm taking my discretionary holiday from work. (Since the suggested time tomorrow doesn't work with all the other stuff going on, and I just haven't had time to read about the new health insurance stuff at work...so I intend to go to the information sessions. And, Friday is also a bad day to be juggling time around....)

I think I need another Tilley

Link: http://www.tilley.com

I'm really going backwards today...but the first thing I thought about as I was making the trek to the UPS Store this morning...was that maybe I need another Tilley Hat.

I have been wearing the one that I did get (an LTM8) quite regularly, but it needed to be washed....but the problem is that my washing machine is a pretty noisy beast, so I only run it when I know I'll be out. Of course, that's when I'll want to be wearing my Tilley Hat.

Now I had purchased other hats over the years....so I fished around for one, and wore that for the trip. It just wasn't the same.

So maybe I need another hat so that I don't have to be without when one is being washed. Or just other back up needs. B-)

OTOH, it might be winter by the time I get around to getting another Tilley Hat.... |-|

I swam home from the UPS store....

....at least it felt like I was. Last weekend, I didn't make it down to the UPS store to see what loot would be waiting for me....and I decided I couldn't put it off another weekend.

There were 4 boxes waiting for me, I had to open 3 of them in the store and make the contents fit into my duffel bag. The 4th was too large either way, but light enough that I carried it under arm....though it cut of the circulation, so my arm was asleep before I made it home...and it was hard to swing it to the otherside, because of the stuff on my belt on that side :(

There were some simple things like a massager I had picked up to pad an order, a digital thermometer/hydrometer which I had been thinking of getting one for the office to see how humid it gets sometimes, a nosquito to see if it would help manage my indoor flying insect problem, as well as some spider traps. The big item is a seat cushion that I bought with the intent of using it on my deck box outside.

It is dark green, but it has that annoying white label on the side that says 'new content only' or annoying stuff like that. I tugged at it to see if it would come off easily....it did, but it wasn't supposed to.

The seam opened up way to easily to let it loose. Now I had a hole in the side of a stuffed bench cushion >:XX

Probably can't return it as defective and too much hassle anyways....

So, I went looking for my sewing kit and sewed it up. A pretty good job, though perhaps I should have some additional color choices for thread in my box....only had black and white thread. I used black for this sewing job.

I can see myself crawling into work late now and then, more often so I can get stuff delivered to my home. At least my job is flexible enough (or is it because I never stop working.... :lalala: )

Next on my list...the new Core 2 Mac Minis and a pile of books. Strange that even if I did work for the library (and not just in the library)...I'd probably still have to be buying tons of books, because the library doesn't carry these kinds of books. Oh well....

Dishwasher Update & Weber Q 120

Link: http://www.weber.com/bbq/pub/grill/2007/q/Q120.aspx

Well, I finally got the new dishwasher today, it arrived this morning....it sure was an ordeal getting it. Crammed allmost of my dirty dishes into and it went to work....while I headed off to work.

Originally Sears.com had said I would get it Thursday, sometime. Though it had to be morning for me, since I had a doctor's appointment (made over a month in advance, and it this last day or try my luck on a waiting list) and the interview of one of the job candidates at work. Wednesday afternoon they had left a message on my home number (I had provided my work number as my daytime number, and repeated told them to reach me at this number...and up until this call...they had been.) The message they left said they would delivery between 11am and 3pm on Thursday. That doesn't work... I called back, but I didn't get home that night until after 9pm...(which had been the norm for a couple of weeks)....so I tried my best to leave the appropriate message.

Late Thursday afternoon...I got another call at home...in fact 3 calls, and messages....none at my daytime/work number :## I called to retrieve the numbers and promptly set out to pin down what was going on....except it was after 5pm and the person that called had left, the person that she said to call if I could get a hold of her had also left, and her manager had also left. But, I did talk to a manager and eventually he called back to say things were straight and that I would get a call from the installer later that day or tomorrow with time.

Later that evening, the installer called and said he would be here to install around 9:30am on Monday. Hence the Pizza Hut weekend.

Ordered from PizzaHut online

I ordered some pizzas and stuff from Pizza Hut online today.

Probably doesn't seem all that strange, because they were one of the first companies to do online ordering for food delivery. And, I came from Columbus, Ohio where for the first part of living the US I lived online....doing the Peapod thing, in addition to Pizza Hut. There was also Donatos, which I kind of miss more.

And, it was kind of planned that I would be ordering food online this weekend...as I do my 4th weekend with no working dishwasher. I've been washing some by hand....I sure use a ton more water doing it by hand, and drying it a problem...not having a dish rack or much in open counter space. And, I'm keeping them out, so that when I do finally have a working dishwasher again....

What is special. Is that when I was job hunting....and figuring out where I might live next, I was looking at the livability of the various locations. And, one of the things I looked at was the proximity to fast food, and/or the ability to get online food deliveries. Use a phone is so last century, especially if you want to know it'll be right, etc.

One of the things I had noted when I was moving here to Manhattan, KS...was that Pizza Hut didn't do online deliveries. I wondered if I could survive without Pizza Hut. I had been, since there are quite a number of other Pizza establishments in Manhattan, KS from which I can order online from. Such as directly from Papa John's or using CampusFood (Gambinos, Dominos, Gumby's). CampusFood is interesting, in that not just Pizza places are available....perhaps someday I'll try getting Chinese delivered. I don't think I've done Gumby's yet.

But I don't have delivery as often now....now that I'm acceptably close to a grocery store, and can't really afford it as often now. Still the same kind of tipper that I've always been...just now it is much more likely that the service person is a student ;)

Stuff at home

Today I came home from "Every Other Friday" at the So Long Saloon...and found a big box sitting by my door. It was the Suncast Outdoor Extended Deck Box/Seat I had ordered on the weekend. I was kind of hoping the delivery would coincide with the dishwasher service call. But, fortunately FedEx ground was kind enough to leave it on my doorstep. It is pretty big and heavy, so it wasn't going to blow away....and I trust my neighbors.

I ordered it from this site, instead of an iGive merchant....because they offered free shipping. Not the lowest price. Though a lower delivered price. The other place I was looking had it for like $40 less, but then it would be $80 for delivery.

Its late, I'll look at that tomorrow.

Meanwhile, I'm gonna order that new dishwasher that I had been looking at yesterday. It has been 24 hours, and I think its the one to go with. The budget for the replacement was $350 or less. Not including delivery, installation and maybe the in-home warranty.

I'm usually mixed on whether to get the extended warranty....though I usually end up getting it. I got it for my HLN4365W1, but never used it. (the renewal managed to find me, even though I didn't give them my new address....the cost of extending it further would be more than it would cost to buy a new one....which is what I would do if it failed....maybe getting a 50" 1080p with the LED light engine...the bezels are thin enough now that it should just squeeze into the opening.). The last time I bought a dishwasher, I had gotten the extended warranty on it...but never had any trouble with it. But, the dishwasher here is just over a year old...

Anyways....I opted to go with a white front....keeping with the color of the other appliances in my kitchen (do plan to upgrade some of them eventually, but not in the near future...which could potentially mean never...) Plus I'm not sure how stainless would look against the cabinets/flooring/counter tops.....

Plus didn't really feel the $50 difference in price was justified, especially at this low end. My parents paid like $1400 for their new dishwasher...though at that end, I suspect stainless steel is the only non-custom front option (or at least I would expect it). Looking at just white units under $350, opened the range where I could get more choice on what kind of features I wanted in my dishwasher. I narrowed to two choices....a Kenmore and a Maytag.

The broken dishwasher is GE, so it was out immediately. The dishwasher I had purchased for my first home was a Maytag. And, Kenmore has been good to me so far...and its what my parents recommended too ;)

There were a couple other brands...but narrowing on features that were desirable for how I use a dishwashwer and the extras that were nice to have. It came down to these two (actually three, but it was 2 Kenmores and a Maytag. I think the other Kenmore was the old model, it had a lower model number...and when I went to order, it didn't appear....). And the leaning was for the Kenmore. And, then I saw that it was on sale until tomorrow for $50 less. Didn't see any other Kenmore models appear that would drop into the range. Though they have a mail-in rebate promotion for 25% off on [any] dishwashers over $399, so that's probably probably why it was an online mark down for models there. But, I don't trust mail-in rebates....wouldn't expect Sears to let me down, but my rule is the now price has to be what I'm willing to pay now...the rebate is something that might come later.

The model number is 16252 (02216252000) in case you want to see what I ordered....their links don't work for sending, including their "send to a friend" option. I tried that, and it said it was no longer valid....implying that I had bookmarked the link. But the "send to a friend" option specifically said was going to send them a link that could be viewed directly.

Wonder when they'll be able to delivery/install it? Guess I might have to resort to doing a few dishes....:**:
