Setting up another WRT54GS

Well, I decided it was time to setup the other WRT54GS....in anticipation of getting Yahoo!DSL...which I ordered just as I was losing hope of getting Cox in time.... though I ended up getting it just in time, so I was able to check online if I needed to go into work at 12:01am or not :>>

But, I decided not to cancel the order, even though I don't know how to live with landline again (and it is rather expensive considering that it is just basic local only service). There was a time where I thought about running a dual WAN home network, and it looks like I'm gonna do this. ;D

So, to start this process....the first thing is to find my WRT54GS. I tried to remember which box it might have been stashed into, and hoped to myself that I at least marked on the box that it was in there. After about two hours of digging around, I noticed that it was sitting on the bottom shelf of my computer desk. Guess I had previously found it, and set it aside for this future event....

Now to check my laptop so that I can replace the firmware with Sveasoft and load in my various customizations.

Yeah....

I have cable TV and broadband again!

Had to use my own modem, rather than the free one....the installer didn't have my details for what I had ordered, and therefore didn't have that equipment. But, better to get service....and he did land a HD converter (and I had that SB5101 laying around).

Now I'm just waiting for a DPH-540 to appear, so I can do phone....

Staying up for an early departure

Back on June 19/20, I blogged that I was staying up over night because I had an early AM flight and decided to just stay up for it.

I found it incredibly difficult to do...and after a while, I seemed to run out of stuff to do online to keep myself occupied. So, I threw in some TV watching to help pass the time.

Well, now I'm trying to do it again.... :**:

Only, I'm finding it even harder to do...because I have no cable TV yet, and no broadband. I'm alternating between using my old AT&T BusinessNet dialup account and my BB7100t as a GPRS modem.

I now have a Manhattan, KS phone number

Link: http://www.privatephone.com/

Using this interesting service that gives me a voice mail only number. Well, I could upgrade to software VoIP...but I'm not looking for that right now.

Interesting question is do I still need to get local phone service after I move to Manhattan, KS? Probably, since it'll probably be a requirement for DSL....

But, at least now I have a number that locals can reach me through.....and a sort of solution to the fact that I apparently won't be able to get Manhattan, KS numbers for the VoIP services that I currently subscribe to.

The death of dialup....

Long after I got broadband service, I continued to have a dialup ISP account. Namely with IBM->ATT Global->Business Net (I think that's how it evolved).... I was principally using the account so that I could access the Internet when traveling, though I did occasionally have to use it as backup for when my broadband was down. And, there was also the gap during my last move.

But, about a year and half now, I've been living landline free at home. So, using it as backup to my broadband....just doesn't work anymore. And, the amount of travel I do is so very little, and just about everywhere I've gone...there has been some kind of WiFi access. Free or Pay.

About the only reason I'm truly hesitant to give up the account, is the email address. For a long time it was my stable, non-free, non-personalized email address (and not dependent on any of the domains that I have registered....) Which was supposed to mean that it was the most reliable way to reach me. Except that it is 99.999% spam these days...and that's at a rate of 100's of messages per day.

So, I think it will be time to finally cancel my dialup account. Even though the monthly savings will be insignificant compared to the upcoming change in lifestyle....:**:

My new 'box'

Well, got it set up, and everything seems to be good, once I did a quick reconfigure of some of the hardware. Namely the network adapter. Though I can't really fully test it, because as luck would have it....it is the 6th of the month.....which means my RoadRunner service is out.

I don't know what it is, but my service is more likely to go out around this day than at any other time. By some strange coincidence it is also when the bill is due. Of course, I can't do much, because no RoadRunner...means I can't access my bank account nor call Time Warner. :`(

WRT54GS & Lingo

Well, I removed some of the wiring nest...and worked in the WRT54GS.

Everything went smoothly...the only tweaks afterwards mainly involved getting PRTG and WallWatcher working again.

With WallWatcher, the WRT54GS seems to log way more. Or perhaps the old router was just ignoring more. Though it could just be interface that logging is done at. One thing I started seeing was all the broadcast noise on the WAN interface. Guess it explains why the activity light on the Cable Modem is on solid, even when I'm not doing anything.

Woohoo ... faster downloads

Got a letter that RoadRunner speeds in my area have been upgraded. So I rebooted the modem to see...and yes...it does get close to 5MBps/512kbps....up from about 3MBps/512kbps.

Though the Poopli freak that I am...it really isn't that much of a boost. Though I still intend to ditch the landline for VoIP at some point this year.

Checking out Spam Bully

Link: http://www.spambully.com

Found out the SPAMAssassin settings are rather limited on my new hosting provider. Having it on results it too many false positives and no options for tweaking/training it.

The old provider had a .spamassassin/user_prefs file in the home directory of the shared account where I could control things. Though the new provider allows you to control which accounts are filtered by it. Useful, because I've had problems with eBay sellers not being able to reach me after an auction because of my spam filter.

Anyways, I've opted to not use it, because of the high level of false positives.

Now instead of subjecting some poor random forum to a long rambling thought, I will try to consolidate those things into this blog where they can be more easily ignored profess to be collected thoughts from my mind.
