Closed my VISA card

Had been putting off closing the card for a couple of years now.... I only used it once in the last year, and pretty lightly in the preceding years, ever since I got responsible with the my use of credit.

Especially since it used to be a FirstUSA card, with an affinity to an organization that it no longer has with (and I am no longer a member of). And, even more so now that it is a Chase Visa...and I'm happy with my Chase Mastercard (and it handles almost all of my needs and has a nice reward program).

So, I called the 1-800 number for 24-hour customer service on the back today....and found that I couldn't call it from my home number (out of the calling area?) So, I had to call it from my cell phone. Then after being on hold for a while, I got an agent and canceled. They didn't give me the hassle that I had gotten when I had canceled other cards in the past. I didn't mention that the reason I don't need it anymore is that I have a Chase Mastercard....didn't have to.

Though I did use it earlier this year, when my Mastercard information had been stolen and used for fraudulent charges, and I had to redirect an online purchase I had made to go to a different card....since I hadn't gotten the info for the new Mastercard yet.

It might be disturbing that this is the second time this has happened with my Chase Mastercard (and I can't recall the last time it has happened with any other card, though I seem to recall that it has happened once before...but the only other incident that is sharp in my mind involved a Visa check card...and I never got any of that money back. And, I didn't know then that I might have been able to use it as a deduction from my taxes....).

But, for now I'm going to stay with Chase for my Mastercard....though co-workers have been suggesting that I go with Citi (and none are the one that left to go work for Citi).

USB A to mini-B Cable quest

With a business trip coming up, I've been looking for my pair of USB A to Mini-B cables. IE: Blackberry Data cables. Its also the cable for my Motorola KRZR K1M.

I use the cables, so I can use my work MacBook Pro as a really expensive charger for these mobile devices. But, it is starting to look like I left them in the hotel room on my last business trip....because they are no where to be found. :##

The thing is that some time ago, that my first Blackberry had come with two...and I'm pretty sure that my second one did too. But, I had managed to lose one...so I had acquired a couple more via eBay....because strangely these cables are hard to find (in a B&M).

I remember early on (in 2006) having looked in the computer store on campus, they didn't have this particular cable.

Now the KRZR didn't come with a cable, and on my last business trip...I resorted to swiping the one for my portable harddrive (time machine drive 'LKC SIDRAT')....

Anyways...I didn't conclude that finding my cables would be a lost cause until this morning.

I immediately checked Amazon.com/Prime to see if they could get me a pair tomorrow. Unfortunately, they wouldn't offer Saturday delivery as an option...just two day (Tuesday) or one day (Monday). Too late.

I was starting to worry about what I might do for cables. I could swipe the one on my computer in a pinch I suppose, and there's the blackberry wall charger...as well. Though I'm already missing the cable for my other blackberry wall charger because of this.

But, I decided to check the campus computer store again....and fortunately they did have some this time. :>>

Now I wonder what else I'm gonna be in a panic to locate for the trip....

Cellet Ruberrized Elite Swivel Holster for K1m

Was a nifty holster while it lasted.

Wonder why Motorola doesn't make a holster clip for this phone...because of this I have to resort to non-OEM holsters.

Most of have tab at the top to separate the phone from the holster, which doesn't give the leverage needed to quickly remove the phone from the holster to take calls. The side release is much easier.

But, today...as I was walking to the grocery stock...I after crossing Claflin into Westloop I heard a click. I looked down and wondered what it was, but everything looked alright. Then I took another step, and the my phone with the holster minus the half the belt clip went crashing into the sidewalk.

Before I picked up the pieces, I could tell that things were gonna be good. :no:

Yep...the front of the KRZR is now crazed(?) XX(

At least it still works. I picked up the holster bit from the ground, and fished part of the clip from my belt and examined how it had failed. And, then I tossed the holster into the nearest dumpster and put the phone in my pocket.

Later walking home I made a quick call to make sure that part worked. And, then I called it when I got home. It seems to still be functional. Now to find a case that'll cover up the cracks. Maybe wearing it on my belt isn't the way to go with this phone. Hmmm...

Meanwhile, there should be another holster somewhere at work...of the top tab kind....

I have two Internet Browser icons on my Blackberry

Over the weekend, I went up to Toronto for my brother's wedding. When I returned to the United States (first landing in Denver), my blackberry got a registration email and suddenly another "Internet Browser" icon appeared next to the one I already had.

It does everything the first one did, and has the same name. I tried hiding it, but that causes both to hide. I tried moving it, that worked until the phone was restarted. Then the other one moved as well.

I tried going on to BIS and having the service books resent. I didn't solve this problem, though I did get a flood of email messages. They were the work ones, so I guess I didn't notice that this wasn't working.

I thought about seeing if I could remove the Browser and reinstall it, but I never used the software from Sprint to set my computer up. So, I didn't have means on my desktop to reinstall it using the Applications installer. I went to the Sprint website, and grabbed it. Noticed that it was a slightly newer version. Meaning it would cause an upgrade. Decided that I would just let it do the full upgrade and see if that resolved it.

It did....

It continues....

....the insanity of buy tech accessories for stuff I don't own or isn't for personal reason reasons. :crazy:

The motivator this time?

I got a Motorola KRZR K1m for work. Using the EC-500, calls to my deskphone will optionally also ring through to this cell phone. It was partly because the on call cellphone will go away, with the number forwarding to either a person's work or personal cellphone when it is their week on call. I didn't want those calls going to a personal cellphone.

And, our workgroup seems to be standardizing on the KRZR (other units had gotten RAZRs, but the KRZR wasn't availble then).

I got the phone on Tuesday. One of the first problems is they had no belt holster available for it, the generic non-OEM one they stocked interfered with the side buttons. So, I went looking on eBay for one. Later I decided to take the plunge and buy a microSD card for it, though I didn't immediately know why....don't really need to use the camera part that much, and I already don't use my iPods much right now. Though the fact that I can use the MP3 player without headphones might be okay.

But, then I discovered that my blackberry charger didn't charge the phone overnight...at all. Turns out dual charger does some kind of sensing, and didn't like the KRZR....while it would let it have power to run plugged in, it didn't give it power to charge. Fortunately it doesn't take long to charge on the supplied charger, and battery life is great...so I can charge it up once in a while at work. Plus the 'dumber' blackberry travel charger will probably work, otherwise I do have other USB plug style chargers available from other gadgets that might work.

So, I'm not buying another charger for it...and if I were, I'd probably make work pick that up.... ;)

But back to the phone. It doesn't have a regular 2.5 jack on it, and it didn't come with a mini-USB to 2.5 adapter. And, the adapter isn't cheap, but I prefer over-head type headsets, because in ear pieces don't stay in my ear and my eyeglasses are painful enough, that I don't need clip on ear or temple types adding to that discomfort. And, the phone doesn't support stereo bluetooth headsets, and again would require the use of a special stereo headphone, or the adapter. Their special headphones is cheaper than the adapter. Though if I got the adapter, I could use my big over ear noise reduction headphones....though it sure would look strange.

Searching around, I found that they do make an over-head bluetooth headset....so late last night, I went online and found a place that had this as well as the special stereo headphones for the KRZR....and order them.

Now to see if I can geek out the sounds it makes.... ;D

Oh yeah, I have already set aside ~1.5GB of MP3s that I plan to load on to the 2GB microSD card that I've ordered for it.... )-o

Get New Mail on Right Click in Thunderbird 2.0

One pet peeve that has resulted from upgrading to Thunderbird 2.0, is that I can no longer right click on an account in the Folder Pane and fetch just the mail for that account.

I have many, many accounts, and some are not set to fetch mail ever, unless I have a specific need to...like Outlook will crash when it gets a certain kind of SPAM message, so I have to use Thunderbird to fetch and purge SPAM and then Outlook can work. Some day I may phase out Outlook, but in the meantime I have a lot of stuff in there that I don't want to migrate...plus I haven't retired my Palm yet (and there's some stuff that is linked to my Blackberry).

Wonder what happens when the Get Mail drop down becomes taller than my screen... :??:

Anyways....I decided that I can't be alone on the subject....so I went Google'ng for things.

The solution was to install the userChrome.js extension for TB, and then add the snippet below to userChrome.js.

/* Add menuitem to Folderpane context - Get New Messages */
var insertWhere = document.getElementById("folderPaneContext-markMailFolderAllRead");
var miGetNewMsgs = document.createElement("menuitem");
miGetNewMsgs.setAttribute("label", "Get New Messages");
miGetNewMsgs.setAttribute("oncommand", "goDoCommand('cmd_getNewMessages')");
insertWhere.parentNode.insertBefore(miGetNewMsgs, insertWhere.nextSibling);

To take the lazy way to getting to userChrome.js, I installed MR Tech Local Install and called up the Chrome Editor.

Now to pull up this blog post on my other computers, so I can apply the same to the Thunderbird there.... ;D

SplashID Password Manager for BlackBerry

Link: http://www.handmark.com/products/detail.php?id=1036

The Palm PDA to Blackberry migration continues.....

My Tungsten T is hardly being used anymore....it had been falling the wayside gradually, ever since I got a Blackberry (2.5 years ago). I've been thinking of upgrading, but they don't seem to offer PDAs much anymore. And, I'm hooked on my Blackberry.

But, there are a few things on my Tungsten T that I don't yet know how to live without. One of which is PDA SafeID (which has evolved into Splash ID for Palm, but I haven't had the urge to update anything on my Palm in a very long time).

There's probably a ton of stuff in this application that I no longer reference, or have need to have around. But, every now and then, it comes in handy as the place to stash something important (usually frequent flyer numbers).

And, since I'm about to go on a trip...it got me thinking that there must be some way to easily migrate and have this data on hand in my Blackberry. Even though I might opt to having my Palm PDA along anyways. I quick google search yesterday, and I found SplashID for Blackberry...a quick email to support, after I guessed my old login information....and found that I could export/import my data. And, I then downloaded and installed the trial....and everything seems to be working great.

It'll definitely be something I'll register.

Now to figure out how I'll move other things I depend on, or see if I can live without...and then finally retire my Tungsten T. Though I haven't yet decided what gadget will replace it.... :lalala:

SyncJe Client 2.11 for Blackberry

Link: http://www.nexthaus.com/blackberry.html

Well, I did it again....I bought another piece of software that is kind of work related. At least I own the hardware that the software is going on, this time ;D

I work at Kansas State University, where we use Oracle Calendar for scheduling... And, I've been looking for a way to sync my work calendar with my Blackberry. Both when I had just the 7100t and now that I have the 8703e.

I had originally looked at trying to do the round about way of syncing with Outlook first, but couldn't get that to work. And, it turns out that syncing my Blackberry to Outlook after syncing with Oracle Calendar was a bad thing. Apparently, this a known problem though....Outlook with Oracle Calendar, bad :p

Anyways, after hearing of other people also working on syncing their blackberry's with Oracle Calendar, I set out to look for a method as well. I heard that there were SyncML clients available that might solve this. I tried a number of different ones...the free ones didn't work out for me, but this one did...and after 10 days of trying it, I've decided to go and buy it.

BTW, the hardest part of getting this to all work was figuring out the URL to have the client connect to. I found it to be:

https://kcalendar.k-state.edu/ocas-bin/ocas.fcgi?sub=syncml
https://kcalendar.k-state.edu/ocst-bin/ocas.fcgi?sub=syncml

And, it was interesting that I had to find it using Google .... which took me to a different University's IT support page. But, that isn't totally unusual.... :P

Update on 2400mAh EXTENDED LIFE BATTERY FOR BLACKBERRY FOR 8703E

Link: http://lawrence.chen-online.net/index.php?title=2400mah_extended_life_battery_for_blackb&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1

Well, just an update. It arrived and it works great. The extra size does make it easier to hold and doesn't get in the way.

I haven't deliberately run it down, but I have missed an overnight charge here and there and it still works through the next day.

Wonder if I'll get a second though....

An early DST 2007.

Well, I didn't want to wake up this morning...I was sore, my throat hurt, there was a productive cough, and it is kind of gloomy out. But, I wanted to check clocks at home and at work to see what changed and didn't change.

The first computer that should've updated, but didn't was my SuSE 9.3 Linux box. I had updated the zoneinfo files for DST....however, I didn't notice that the link between /etc/localtime and /usr/share/zoneinfo/US/Central had gotten severed. So the machine was still running using the old zoneinfo definition. But, zdump -v US/Central wasn't gonna tell me this.

I then check the other main computers at home and moved on to other devices. I was pleasantly surprised to find that my radio controlled clock, which I try to set all my other clocks against, was showing the correct time. I had been holding off on looking at another one of these clocks, guess it is safe to get one.

Then I check the VoIP phones....the Uniden has a local clock, so I had up date it. I drew a blank on what my Vonage number was...guess it has been a long time since I had to call it or give it out. It read an hour ahead, I guess it is still stuck on sending Eastern Time. Guess the still go by the timezone for the areacode of the number associated with it, rather than the timezone in my account profile. That's annoying.

Broadvoice doesn't seem to have updated for DST :(

I then updated the important clock...the clock on my coffee maker and put on coffee, and then back off to updating other clocks around home. It was also good to see that my Palm Tungsten T had updated....though hotsync'ng is a problem. DST change always seems to reset everything in my calendar...and this time was worse than usual. I blame Microsoft Outlook. Though I did run the timezone tool, though it was a bit weird...since Outlook is not my default mail client...its my calendar and contact tool. I suppose I should do something about this setup....especially since I have too many different calendars now. Plus, I haven't figured out where I'm at in my PDA replacement project. The Palm Tungsten T is pretty much only calendaring for me now....anyhoo.... The DST change also causes the backupbuddy to backup everything fresh again...which makes the first sync really long and painful.

The Blackberry sync seemed to have issues...but it was problem me trying to do it while the Palm sync was still going on. It worked fine later.

But, it was off to check my ReplayTVs and other HT devices if they had the correct time. All the ReplayTVs had the correct time, I was surprised to see that my Momitsu V880N was also right....and it was good that the Cox HD DVR was also right, because when I looked at it last night...the guide was wrong. But, the lack of new programming for the first few days might seem intentional :?:

As usual, since I was here...I checked the lamp timer on my Samsung HLN4365W1....5255 hours. Had noticed that it seems to be having more trouble turning on that usual, but it is still working. Hopefully the spare bulb I have works, when that time comes. OTOH, I see that 50" units are now thin enough that they should fit into my stand....and 1080p might be nice. Though I'll probably wait until the spare bulb is spent....by then they should perfect LED based RPTVs :>> Plus I might be willing to update my furniture to allow an even bigger screen ;D

I'm sure I've missed other clocks (at home)....but I think I'm done.

Wonder if I want to wander out and see if the outside world is right....namely it has been over a week since I've done groceries....

Hmmm, the server time for this blog is off my an hour....guess I'll have to do it manually? :P
