Blackberry Stuff

Link: http://www.blackberrystuff.com/

Well, looking around at accessories and doing some reading....it appears that while the new C-S2 batteries of the 87xx will work in the older 71xx phones...the older C-S1 batteries from those won't work in the 87xx devices.

And, since the price is more reasonable....I think I paid ~$100 for the extra C-S1....~$25 for a C-S2....I decided to get one....in addition to the other accessories I did decide to order today.

Namely, I got a different style case and decided to see what the cradle is like.

Sprint Blackberry 8703e

Well, its true....when they announced that this would be available on October 1st....it did show up on their website today, available for order.

At first I was just going to look around, but in chatting with an online sales rep....I decided to go for it. He assured me that I would get a local phone number (unlike T-Mobile).

I don't know if I'll keep the old Blackberry 7100t or not....I got it unlocked yesterday...so it either makes it easy to sell, or makes it possible to use a different SIM card should the need arise.

At one time, I had considered travelling the Europe and therefore having a use for the capability...but it seems unlikely that there'll be any overseas travel in my near future.... The darn terrorists are winning.... :##

Anyways...in somewhat haste to complete the order, I forgot to browse for accessories....though about the only thing I might be looking at is an extra battery (which I don't need right away) and maybe a different style case...which probably won't come from Sprint (or Blackberry).

The 12-Drive RAID Storage Box

Link: http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1558,2018300,00.asp

In addition to the 3 (or 4, or 5) rather definite big ticket items in my purchase plans....

 1. New prescription eyewear (x2)
 2. Blackberry 8703e
 3. A suitable all season bicycle
 4. this home that I'm living in...
 5. a Mac Mini

There's now a pile of other stuff that I'm thinking that I want to get. The latest is this 12-Drive RAID box. Might just be in the price range that I can rationally accept. Sure its not a true 12 drive array, but at least it is step in the 'right' direction.

Sprint Blackberry 8703e

Link: http://www.mobilewhack.com/reviews/sprint_blackberry_8703e.html

Just as I was thinking that I would have to give in and go with the 7130e, word has come out that the 8703e will be available from Sprint.

Now the question is should I wait until my birthday to get it or not ;D

When and What Blackberry....

Further late night investigation seems to indicate that a version of the 8700 will be available in CDMA soon. 8702?

So, should I wait for this?

How long can I endure without a local phone number? Or how long can I endure without a blackberry? Though there was also the part where I thought about having two personal wireless accounts...one voice and one blackberry. Though I'm starting to have too many different gadgets to contend with.

Especially when my week with the HOT phone rolls around.

But, I'm still not ready for Palm & Phone convergence. I'm still eyeballing the Tx, but I still haven't made that move yet. Because pretty much the only thing that I use is DateBk5.

I usually acquire new phones around the end of October....hopefully I'll retain this pattern? End of October being around when my birthday is ;D

Though I've also seen rumors that the next 8700 series is targetted for iDen....hopefully, the CDMA will actually be first (or at the same time). Since I'm pretty sure of the choices I would prefer a Sprint or AllTel, rather than a Nextel. I have no idea what the coverage is like for Nextel, and I don't know anybody (at work) that uses them....which might be an indication.

Hopefully not Verizon Wireless....who I had jumped ship from before T-Mobile and who isn't available in this new area (seems it is AllTel that is the equivalent company). Of course, more and more, it seems cell phone companies aren't into customer service. So, maybe if I stop expecting it.....

Blackberry Addiction.

Maybe I was premature on saying that I would give up Blackberry, because of my current problems with T-Mobile (and not being able to get Cingular).

Looking at the other phones that are out there....I just can't see myself using such devices. Feels like I'm cutting something off of me. Even though they do offer other bells and whistles....but I don't have much need for a camera in a cellphone (especially the crummy res., etc....and I'm rarely with out a digital camera... ;) ). And, have seemingly less interest in MP3 or watching TV by cellphone.

Though other than the 8700, which Blackberry's purport to play WAV file attachments? Since, that's one thing my current blackberry doesn't do....and it would be nice since my home phone has the option to forward its voicemail's as a WAV attachment....

Maybe I'll just have to settle for a 7130e.... :|

OTOH, the other model that will do WAV files is the 7100i....

Death to T-Mobile

...which also seems to be death to GSM, and death to Blackberry. :..(

Because I moved to Manhattan, Kansas...I wanted a local number. Though the silly customer support doesn't seem to understand this kind of request. At first they wanted to issue me a new Columbus, Ohio number. Yeah, my old number is there. But, I had already updated my billing, mailing and service address to Manhattan, Kansas months ago. Though I had switched to paperless billing a couple months before the move.

Then they wanted to know what area code I'm in...and what is the nearest city. Well, okay..the area code is 785....but, ummm, Manhattan, Kansas is the city.

What they then said was it'll cost me $15 + $2, to change...and I might lose my calling plan, and have to get a new one. Later another rep even said based on a review of my past usage, I should upgrade to a plan that costs twice as much as I'm paying now. Past usage? Until the 'move'. My monthly usage was only in the low double digits. It was only because of the 'move' and not having any home services for almost a month...that my usage spiked last month. But, total bill was only about 50% more....sure it was only over by like 75 minutes. And, for the cost of 150 minutes, they would add 600 more to my plan. Except I'll probably never need those minutes again.

Especially since they didn't give me a local number. The only people that will call me are people dialing wrong numbers. Though this was largely most of my received calls before....but, circumstances are different....

Anyways...after lots of canned support responses....they finally understood the issue, and said they would escalate as me wanting the matter corrected as having already paid and not getting what I wanted. And, before I could write back that it wasn't about the money and that I would pay another $17 to get things done right, but they weren't saying this in any of their responses until now....I got the response, they are out of local numbers...and all they will do is appologize for the inconvenience....

DPH-540 Talk Time

Well, just had my first long-ish phone call...it was actually short at only 21 minutes. The battery guage is one line from empty.

But, since cell reception at work went from non-existent to full-5 bars....I guess I don't the WiFi phone for that, in fact I'm wondering if I still need it at all.

Especially since, I'll be doing less travel in the near future because of those darn terrorists. >:-(

Meanwhile, because my cell works at work now....I guess I should call T-Mobile and see about getting a local number. :o

Where am I at with the DPH-540?

This morning, my DPH-540 was off and wouldn't turn on. Forgot to plug it in last night to recharge. Guess battery life on it can't be anything like what I get with my cellphone, etc.

Guess this is something you have to live with it being WiFi and having to being active all the time (yet it isn't, otherwise, I wouldn't be having my other issues with it).

Last night I was on a call with Discover, activating my new card. I felt the call quality was excellent, etc. Though I was just pacing around my living room where the AP is. And, my network was pretty idle, etc. Though the QoS is usually pretty good on my router (actually it isn't, when I'm on the phone, everything else slows to a crawl....and I can see on my bandwidth graph that it pretty much because just the phone call using bandwidth....~90k each way out of the 4M/512k that I could be doing....usually the upstream is saturated, but its summer and IVS traffic has been light).

Anyways, an extra battery and an external charger sure would be handy now. I have it as a standard accessory with all my cellphones....even though my current one can do about 2-3 days. I did a two night trip where I didn't bring the external charger and didn't have my computer USB cable....it died on the way home from the trip. More recent trips, I only bring the USB cable...use my heavy laptop as a super expensive phone charger. :))

Actually, given the short battery life...they probably could've made it easier to access the USB port on the bottom of the phone....

Setting up another WRT54GS

Well, I decided it was time to setup the other WRT54GS....in anticipation of getting Yahoo!DSL...which I ordered just as I was losing hope of getting Cox in time.... though I ended up getting it just in time, so I was able to check online if I needed to go into work at 12:01am or not :>>

But, I decided not to cancel the order, even though I don't know how to live with landline again (and it is rather expensive considering that it is just basic local only service). There was a time where I thought about running a dual WAN home network, and it looks like I'm gonna do this. ;D

So, to start this process....the first thing is to find my WRT54GS. I tried to remember which box it might have been stashed into, and hoped to myself that I at least marked on the box that it was in there. After about two hours of digging around, I noticed that it was sitting on the bottom shelf of my computer desk. Guess I had previously found it, and set it aside for this future event....

Now to check my laptop so that I can replace the firmware with Sveasoft and load in my various customizations.
