D-Link DPH-540 Wi-Fi Phone

I've been toying with getting a WiFi VoIP phone for some time....especially since I can't get cell service down in the basement where I work.

Meanwhile, there is also an issue where I can't get local numbers from the VoIP carriers that I belong to. So, I've been thinking of jumping ship.

The only hard part is my existing phone numbers. Some I would like to keep, others I'm less concerned about.

I've been cutoff!

In Time Warner's usual high efficiency...the service tech showed up well in advanced of the scheduled window. He left with all my rented equipment, including my cable modem. So, I have no more Internet or Telephone service at home (well, I have my phone....and for some reason the only calls have been Unknown numbers violating DoNotCall....:##)

So, how am I posting this.

Well, I could cable up to my cellphone and get online this way....but I'm not currently doing this.

What I'm doing is taking advantage of the clutter (2.4GHz spectrum) and using somebody else's open WiFi access :lalala: to find more boxes.

SanDisk Cruzer Micro (2GB) w/U3

Yesterday I bought one of these from Best Buy. I had been on the fence for getting one for a while, since floppy drives are starting to get scare and CDs aren't practical. And, there'll be times where using the Internet be an option, either.

But, it came down to size for price and convenience. I have an iPod Shuffle, and I do have most of it set aside for space...but I never actually use it for data, because it isn't all that practical. I don't like the music part of it that much and having to deal with a cap that I can lose reduces my desire to actually carry it around.

During my recent trip, I got to thinking that there should be some way to better synchronize the data for RoboForm between my computers. And, read about GoodSync and later the Pass2Go product. Seemed the way to go with this might be a USB Flash Key, and possibly one with U3. Even though U3 isn't Mac, but then RoboForm isn't available for the Mac yet and I don't currently own one yet. But, I'm contemplating one to replace my old laptop....inaddition to the HTmac, I've been talking about building

A post-mortem of a recent trip....

My first trip since figuring out how to use my Blackberry 7100t as a modem was kind of a failure.

Largely because after I had left, I instantly realized that I had forgotten the USB cable.

Aside from not being able to use my Blackberry 7100t as a modem to access the Internet in places where there wasn't free also meant that I could recharge the battery. I had also contemplated packing my travel charger, but I guess I also forgot to do this.

Fortunately the hotel room had free WiFi, and it was a really decent connection so I made extensive use of that. Another less minor thing that I had forgotten to pack was my Where's George stamp. I could enter the new bills that I acquired during the trip, but I couldn't stamp them. Though I set the to one side of my wallet to avoid having to spend them, so that they could be stamped when I got home.

As it was I managed not to spend these. I suppose I could've made a bigger effort to spend cash during the trip if George'ng was important. There were some other bills that did cross my hands, but they didn't stick around long enough for them to be entered. Normally, I try not to think to much about George'ng when I'm traveling.

Upgraded to Outlook 2003

For reasons that suddenly escape me....I upgraded to Outlook 2003, today. I was previously running Outlook 2000 as part of the Office 2000 Suite.

In my current situation, I couldn't justify the cost to upgrade to Office 2003 at the moment....especially since I believe Office 2007 is just around the corner. But, there was probably some compelling reason to upgrade....probably because Outlook 2000 kept crashing for unknown reasons. :??:

Well, installing the upgrade didn't seem such a bad thing....until I tried to run it. Various plugins didn't work, namely the version of Chilton Preview and LookOut. So, I have to track updates for these.

I then tried to do a sync with my Palm Tungsten| wants permission to connect and then it doesn't work. Guess I need to update the conduit (PocketMirror), only it looks like I need to pay to update. :##

Guess, I'll just live with it...since I don't sync all that often at the moment....and I'm sure that once I buy the Palm TX (or whatever is new when I can), I'll have access to a version of the conduit that works better.

I then checked my also had trouble, but a quick reinstall of the BlackBerry Desktop Manager software seems to have it working again.

Now off to customize it to get back my old feel..... :(

How to use the Blackberry 7100 as a GPRS Modem

I've been meaning to try this with my BB7100t for a long time, and because part of me has started to worry about what I'll do for Internet access should I find that next opportunity and have to move....I finally started looking into again.

At first it didn't seem to want to work....but after repairing my BBdm installation and uninstalling/reinstalling drivers and rebooting a whole bunch of times, it finally appeared and I was able to create a modem and connection for it. :)

Then I successfully connected and played around a little bit. It has been a long time since I've been online using something other than broadband....even slow broadband (such as satellite from a cruise ship) was better than what I was getting. Basically it was comparable to dial-up. :p

Using the speed test at, I recorded a speed of 26 down and 8 up. Which seems in line with what I recall reading somewhere.

Using a smaller/different test, I was able to record a speed of 38k. GPRS is probably not that well suited to large file transfers....

At least now I know that I'll have another option for connecting to the net.

Upgrade time again?

There's something about an impending trip that seems to trigger doing a rash of upgrades, risking leaving my equipment inoperable just before hand?

But, I've launched myself into doing them.

I'm upgrading various bits of software on my laptop and I upgraded the software on my BB7100t.

SpeckProducts SkinTight for BB7100t

I received another case for my BB7100t.

Looked interesting on the website, but almost immediately on putting my BB7100t into it...I started disliking it.

First that it would get to be a pain for replacing the battery.

Doctor Who Ring Tone on my BB7100t

I've been meaning to try getting a Doctor Who ring tone on my BB7100t, and while doing some disk cleanup I came across some related MIDI files.

Of the ones I found, this is the one that seems to work the best as a ring tone.

T-Mobile Personal Coverage Check

Looks like they are making this info available to the public finally.

I wonder if I would've still signed up had this been the case.

Because when I visited the lcoal T-Mobile store, and asked about my coverage...they showed me a screen that looked like this, based on the address of where I work (which is what I was concerned about).

6500 Emerald Parkway, Dublin, OH

Problem is that the location on the map is not where the office is.

Now instead of subjecting some poor random forum to a long rambling thought, I will try to consolidate those things into this blog where they can be more easily ignored profess to be collected thoughts from my mind.
