UPS, Westar Energy, DPP-600HD and CPAP

Well, here I am sitting in the dark....had to make some reconfigurations of stuff so I can still be online for the moment....

But, this is like the 3 significant outage in the last couple of weeks. Didn't I get a letter earlier this year saying that there had been like 4 in the previous year, and that they were going to be working on improving reliability of the system? Forgot to talk to my doctor about what to do when the power is out, and I want to keep breathing while I'm sleeping....

Earlier I blogged on how I had pulled the trigger on buying a DPP-600HD to maybe have DC power backup for such things. Only problem was that UPS was supposed to deliver it today. Scheduled Delivery July 3rd. It last showed as out for delivery at 4:45am. Obviously they didn't show up at all, even though I canceled my plans for today to stay home and wait for it.

Not sure what has me more annoyed. Since my electric bill goes up every month, even though I'm on average pay plan....and I'm sure running CPAP and the associated others (like needing more AC because it gets warm and wet under the mask otherwise). isn't helping my costs.

Can't say that I'm using more power than I did when I lived in Ohio....and at first my bills seem to match what I used to pay back there. But now its like 60% more.... wonder what I'm getting for it.

Though still, I think I'm more annoyed at UPS still. Though as this power outage stretches on....that's changing.

shopamex and Duracell DPP-600HD

I have been meaning to get a Duracell DPP-600HD Powerpack for some time, as a backup power solution for my CPAP. That's the intended primary use. Though I'm sure I'd find other emergency applications for it....

While Amazon/Prime would be a cheaper faster way to get it...if I was doing cash out of pocket spending....since its ~$150+tax right now, and I've seen ~13x+tax. But, pulling the trigger on actually getting despite having been hit by a bunch of power outages recently....has been a problem. Other priorities and belt tightening.

Today, I saw that the 20% off shopAMEX promotion was going on again. So, I popped over for a look. And, saw that I had enough points to get a 600HD from a shopAMEX merchant. Now the price of the unit is much higher than Amazon.com, and there is a charge for standard delivery of it...so more expensive and slower. But, since its points it has a different feel to it.

While the 600HD was the first thing I checked via shopAMEX, it wasn't the thing that I was going to purchase at first. I remembered that I'm still looking for a new dresser to solve the disintegration of my old one and the piles of clean laundry cluttering up my bedroom floor. But, there weren't any suitable dressers available for the amount of points that I had left (and I didn't want to get an advance on points). Even though this means that I'll have to buy a dresser for much more...and the procrastination on it could mean I won't get one until next year....

So, not finding a suitable dresser under my points threshold....I went ahead and pulled the trigger on getting the Powerpack 600HD.

Rainapocalyse: The Post

Last night I experienced another Kansas Weather Event. Starting to wonder if I had known about these things, would I have called Manhattan, Kansas home?

Last night it was rain, and lots of it. I may as well have been a solid water coming down everywhere....almost the instant it started....I could hear water pouring into my living room. I had towel handy, and the put empty trash containers along the patio door and that kept most of the water at bay.

Carpet was dry by morning.

But, then the inevitable next happened. The power flickered and then went away. I was watching TV at the time (L&O: Criminal Intent). Guess I'll have to pick up the ending later. Things were humming on the UPS. Though somethings bounced...I turned off the TV and the V880N. Seems my HDVI5 switcher isn't on a UPS. So, there was no using things while the UPSs beeped. I thought I had disabled the beeper in the UPS, but maybe it only disables if it knows there's a computer attached....there isn't so...hmmm.

The UPS handling 'lhaven' died immediately. So, no IRC. So, even though the cable modem was still working and lasted more than half an hour. And, the DSL modem never went down. I was quickly without Internet, as computers ran down. And, my wireless access points are connected to desktop UPSs. I think I should move the access point to the PowerSource 400 that was backing up my phone/VoIP/router/dsl.

I went around shutting down some other computers to help stretch the UPSs....

Seems the Lasko floor fan and the Kenmore Envirosense air purifier didn't like being on the UPS...probably the TRIAC to make low speed fan and the simulated sine wave of the UPS output not getting along. I turned these things off. And, then after pacing around for a while, and checking various light sources. And, finding it getting warm and stuffy indoors. I went out and listened on my HT to the weather spotters, and checked out the area.

I survived....and then felt like experimenting

This morning, there was a loud beep along with a variety of other strange sounds that woke me. The power had gone out. I could still breath, so my PowerSource400 was doing its job.

I don't yet have the humidifier plugged into the PowerSource400, but I was only using it in passive mode last night. Though I was told in chat that it'll work on an inverter, so it would work on the PowerSource400. The brochure even touts it as a feature of benefit to truck drivers and campers.... Didn't occur to me to find out. Though biggest problem is forgetting to turn it on at night, and/or turning it off in the morning.

Almost as soon as I was fully aware that the power was out and that I was still getting air....there was another beep, and power was back on. I went back to sleep for a little while longer....

Later I saw the clean air filter light was on the air purifier in the room next to my bedroom, so wondered if the air cell would fit in my ultrasonic cleaner. So, first I cleaned my cushions using it....and then found the air cell was too big. But, also time to replace white filter....or rather swap a white filter in for the grey filter....gonna say it picked up a long more funk because I traveled last weekend....

Also in between cushion cleaning and air purifier cleaning...I decided that it was time to try my hand at modifying my ComfortLite II mask. Guess we'll find out how that works tonight.

Finally, I was looking at my data...and decided I should see if I can get EncoreViewer & USB reader working on my new laptop...where its running Ubuntu...with Windows XP in a VirtualBox VM.

Had lots of fun trying to get USB working, but basically it was combine various information found online on the subject...until I got it to work. There was a bit of VirtualBox/USB and Intrepid. udev file didn't quite match, since there was already a vbox one that did the same thing that it described. Another forum post had a different method, but talked of creating a separate group...make the device nodes in that group...and adding vbox & user to the group....while the 'VirtualBox/USB' method said add user to vboxusers group.

What I went back and did was have it make the /proc/bus/usb device nodes for the vboxusers group...and then finally the devices showed up (after a reboot).

The XP VM detected the USB devices, installed drivers and the light turned green....EncoreViewer started reading the smartcard, but then it failed. I fiddled some more...eventually rebooted the XP VM, it did a bunch of stuff (some 33 updates?)...and trying again, I was able to successfully read the smartcard.

Then it was a matter of copying some files from my desktop to the VM, so I could have the historical data. Laptop way will just be so I know it would work rather than use it regularly....of course, that might change if I make it the bedroom computer after the rearrangement. Though I'm thinking a whole new computer would go there....perhaps one of those ASUS atom based all in ones.

Hmmm....

What kind of trouble can I get myself into next. :hmm:

Penguicon 7.0 & CPAP

I went to another Penguicon, at Penguicon 6 I had earned whuffies which I used to get a shirt for that con and registration to the next one. At Penguicon 7.0, I earned just enough whuffies to get registration to Penguicon 2010 (I had purchased a shirt). At first I hadn't decided if I would go for Penguicon again...but once I started earning whuffies, I needed to find some reason that I was earning them...and eventually settled on getting registration to come again next year.

Anyways....Penguicon 7.0 was also my first trip anywhere since I started CPAP. I survived, in fact I miss it. Since I slept better in the hotel room than I do at home. I always thought I did in previous travels, now even more so with CPAP. I would wake feeling refreshed (and not needing coffee), and I could make it most of the day before getting tired. Now that I'm back...the not totally awake and needing coffee in the morning is back.

I decided to leave the 'do not disturb' sign out all the time, and not have housekeeping poking around. It also took the pressure off in using my hotel room for more than just sleeping at night and during the con. So, no more going out for breakfast and then coming back to use the bathroom, and worrying that housekeeping is going to come barging in or skip me...or be in my room and prevent me from using the bathroom.

I was worried about running out of shampoo, but turned out to have ample for the 4 nights.

For some reason I swear my machine was quieter in the hotel room, perhaps its because the night stand was open in the bottom from just the front, and I put the machine in there. So the machine's noise was shielded much better. The IKEA night stand I have at home is open front and back....and not as low. Don't know if this is something I'll look at addressing should I ever get around to rearranging my bedroom.

There were other improvements....like I didn't fall asleep on the 3+ hour shuttle ride to the airport....though I found it really boring, and I was kind of all annoyed about the fact that I reserved the trip on April 4th...but RoadRunner lost my reservation and then the driver seemed annoyed that I was holding up his departure. But, the shuttle arrived ahead of schedule at the airport.

Then the RoadRunner trip coming home came in slow....because before the scheduled pickup, it dumped a couple quarts of oil and was continuing to leak. Before we left Kansas City it had to stop and have 3 quarts added to it. There was no stop in Lawrence, so then stopped in Topeka at the RoadRunner office there, so that the engine could be shut off some some more poking around under the hood.... Then one of the passengers (a backup driver for RoadRunner), as we were coming up to the Manhattan, KS turn off from I70, had the nerve to suggest that since I was the only passenger going there...that the driver should skip going to Manhattan so that he could make sure that he gets to Junction City.

Things also got really noisy, took on a guy in Topeka who was blasting tunes on his PSP (the passenger/backup driver pretended to poke at the PSP from behind, I just had to put up with it)....and then there were 3 small children in the back, who now awake (having slept through everything else) were adding to the noise level in the shuttle.

Wonder when I'll be able to plan American Eagle flights out of Manhattan?

Lasko 3540 Cyclone 20-Inch Pivoting Floor Fan with Remote Control

Link: http://www.amazon.com/Lasko-3540-Cyclone-20-Inch-Pivoting/dp/B001DNGRYG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1240443537&sr=8-1

On the weekend, I started finding it uncomfortably warm at night....particularly in the area under the headgear of my CPAP mask. I was resorting to turning the thermostat down.

It isn't that warm and humid yet....could get really expensive if I'm going to need to do this all summer. Temporarily I have inverted the sleep time temperature range on my set-back thermostat. Normally, its not as cool when I'm sleeping. Now its cooler than any other time.

While I was laying there waiting for the A/C to have its effect, the air purifier kicked itself to high and it made a slight improvement in comfort. Years ago when I lived in Medicine Hat, and didn't have air conditioning...I had floor fans (TurboAire) that I pointed at the ceiling to circulate air and make things tolerable. I had given them away a few moves ago....

But, I thought that maybe I should get something like it ASAP. I had been looking previously, but it wasn't a rush then...so I had put it off, because I wanted to find the same brand as I used to have....but it wasn't coming up in my internet searches (partly because I couldn't remember the brand name).....and because I was looking for a fan, rather than an 'air circulator'

However, now that I was in a hurry to get one....I looked to Amazon Prime to have it come my way on a particular day when I was going to be home for other reasons.

It was hard trying to find out if the fan would tilt to the full blow into ceiling orientation (a video review of the Lasko 3540 didn't show it tilting more than a few clicks up) But, after narrowing down the choices that were sold by Amazon.com and in stock, so that I would get it today. I settled on this one.

Part of the reason was the remote control and another part was that it seemed to have only a two-prong plug. And, I crossed my fingers that it would go to the straight up orientation.

I got an Ultrasonic Cleaner

On cpaptalk.com, it was mentioned using an ultrasonic cleaner to clean masks. So, that got me looking around for an ultrasonic cleaner.

Since the OP got his off of Australian eBay, I decided to get one from a US eBay seller.

It arrived today. I got a bigger unit than the OP, but it isn't too big. In fact when I picked up the package from the UPS store, it was smaller than I expected.

Though for the mask I have now, it'll probably be way too big. Though I have other masks around, and they might need the extra room.

I did a quick test of the machine and then put my glasses in for a short cycle. It sure was interesting watching what seemed like smoke streaming from the rims, hinge and nose pieces. I probably needed to have it in there longer to really get all the gunk out. But, I think my glasses are the cleanest they've ever been....

It'll be Sunday before I get around to run mask parts through it. Want to allow sufficient time for the parts to air dry afterwards....and Saturday I'm helping with communications for the Cabin Fever bike run. Plus I need to brew up some more distilled water....

Today was Amazon Kindle 2 Day

Though it wasn't the day that my Amazon Kindle 2 arrived...that arrived a day early. But, I did start loading it up with material to read. The first purchased item was a subscription to Reader's Digest.

I had let my print subscription go years ago, because it was hard to keep up....I have too many magazines and not enough time, so I could probably stand to lose a few more here and there. But, it was interesting reading Reader's Digest again...on the Kindle. Might look at other subscriptions, though not really sure what else I would want that is currently available.

Also not sure where I stand on books. I haven't been reading much in a very long time, but I've been meaning to get back into things....I just don't know where to begin now.

Surround Air XJ-3800 Intelli-Pro Air Purifier

Link: http://www.surroundair.com/intellipro.htm

Back on July 1st, I wrote about a new air purifier I had acquired -- LINK.

That new air purifier has been great, and I've been wanting to get 2 or 3 more similar units to scatter around my condo. Namely in that it has been very effective at dealing with odors, and its odor sensor to make it come up when needed.

Yes, it is interesting how during the night, the air purifier will rev up now and then. Especially lately, where Aerophagia is a known side-effect of CPAP therapy. Though disturbing is that when I take a shower (and the bathroom exhaust fan is going, its on the same switch as the bathroom light....though I'm thinking that someday I'll see about separating the two)....I will come out and find it rev'd up.

Anyways...I original got it to help combat the odors that come up in my condo from my neighbors. Before it was like food odors, and the neighbor seemed a good cook....though sometimes the smell was something being burnt. But, the new neighbors seem to like excessive strong scents on stuff, and other neighbors like using gallons of lighter fluid when the grill.

One of the problem areas is near where there's a hole in my floor into the unit below....by the dryer. So, I've been thinking of getting another unit to put here.

After months of wanting to get one, I finally decided I couldn't put it off any longer and pulled the trigger on one. But, size is a factor for this location (and so was price) So, I went looking for possibly a smaller unit for this location. There was a smaller version of the same or similar air purifier, but it was almost as expensive as the size I had gotten....especially since the larger size is often on sale (as it was at this particular moment). The smaller one was on sale around black friday, but Sears didn't actually have any in stock (for online purchase)...and when Sears sent me the email that it was back in stock...the sale was over.

So, I expanded my search to include other models with similar features available through Amazon Prime. And, this was one of the units that seemed to fit the bill. Though it turned out to be much bigger than I expected. But, I set it up there and it seems to do the job.

Though so far no strong odors for it to deal with. Though it did react when I was making shake and bake.

It was interesting to note that it didn't react when I was taking my shower this morning, though the bedroom air purifier still did.

Intermatic DT17 Heavy Duty Digital Timer Product Recall

Link: https://www.intermaticstore.com/dt17recall.pgm

Amazon.com sent me an email notice informing me of a voluntary product recall of the Intermatic DT17 that I had purchased from them a while back.

It indicated that any date code ending in 'A', 'B', or 'C' along with 40Z to 52Z were affected. A quick check shows mine is 13B.

Visiting the recall site, it appears you submit a claim and they send you a postage paid mailing carton to collect the recalled timer and then send you a new one. So, at least its free. But, it means that I'm without my timer in the mean time.

I've been using this timer to control my Hot Water Pot....to cut down on the amount of unnecessary on time of this appliance. Even then, sometimes its probably on more than it needs to be. But, having the Hot Water Pot is kind of a convenience thing.... :>>

I guess I can go back to leaving it on all the time for the gap.
