New Scanner is here....

Link: http://www.microtekusa.com/smi320.html

....and it is a bust.

Installed the software, restarted....restarted....restarted....restarted....:##

Uninstalled the software....restarted....installed newer version of the software (actually it was try to upgrade software, which caused the uninstall/restart, then install)....restarted....restarted....restarted....:##

Seems there's a conflict between the scanner driver and other services, namely the UPS management software. :**:

Uninstall everything...restarted....restarted....restarted....>:XX

It messed something up on my system, and I can't get things to work again.

Try using the dreaded "System Restore"......

:??: There's only two restore points :??:

And, they were intermediate points during the initial software installation :!:

Use the oldest one anyways.....yeah, my machine started all the way through again! :.

What am I going to do with the scanner now? haven't even gotten to try connecting it yet

Post Cruise Temporary Insanity

Link: http://www.microtekusa.com/smi320.html

The post-cruise temporary insanity has hit me....

I just ordered a new flatbed scanner....the main feature, Digital ICE.

Built-in DIGITAL ICE Photo Print Technology repairs damaged photos
- Automatically restores damaged photos
- Identifies and eliminates unwanted surface defects
- Easily corrects deep scratches, cracks, creases, rips and tears in photo print surfaces

I bought it impulsively over eBay, before seeing that it could be had cheaper through other means....which is also significant, because Discover is offering 5% cashback bonus for online purchases right now. Though the thinking is that there's a cash balance in my PayPal account, and I don't quite see it as the same as actual money...because pretty much the only way to spend it....is to buy something from eBay.

Nikon D200 Preview

Link: http://www.dpreview.com/articles/nikond200/

Yeah...they finally made the Nikon D-SLR that I've been waiting for....

It has an AI Aperture Ring. B-)

Now I can use all my old Nikon lenses (well, except for my IX lenses...better than none ;) ) on a Nikon D-SLR (without having to buy a[nother] handheld meter....)

Now to wait until I have a job again, so I can buy it. I guess that's the upside of losing my job just as I was contemplating giving up the wait and taking the plunge for a D70s....

Chimping Exposed!

Link: http://www.chimping.com

So, it has a name....and that name is "Chimping" :))

I had thought it was comical watching the photographer on the Sun Princess constantly looking down at her Nikon D1X's LCD after each shot or so.

I suppose over time, I'll develop or use this trait. But, I'm still old school where I just shoot lots of pictures and see later if I got the good one. And, sometimes a day or two would go by before I knew if I snapped the good one onto film.

The closest exception, would be the fact that my Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ2 doesn't have an optical viewfinder....so I have to look at the LCD and sometimes I turn the autoreview back on. The default is for it to be on, but it is one of the features I automatically turn off because I want to maximize the speed at which I can fire away at in the quest to get that money shot. 88|

HP Photosmart 8450

Today, I finally decided it was time to setup the new printer....

On the most part it was pretty straightforward. It kind of fits, being that it is bigger than the old printer....though the way it sits on my stand, there is no traction so it likes to slide around alot....especially when I'm trying to switch paper or load ink cartridges. And, it'll probably do it when I try memory cards in it or connecting a camera to it (should I choose to try this).

But, I did decide to have it become the memory card device for my computer. Since it uses only a single drive leter, rather than my USB reader which is using up 4 drive letters.

So far the only problems I've had is that I can't seem to setup multiple print queues like I did with my DJ970Cxi. So, the default is to print FastDraft double sided, etc. And, no queue shortcut for when I want to print good or better. Guess we'll see how I live with that.

The other obstacle was configuring Stamps.com to work with it. I got the rear tray option to hold #10 envelopes. The shape step tries to use Letter size to figure out what orientation to print as, but the printer detects the size error and won't let it. So, I had to pick a shape and see if that worked. Online support for Stamps.com, mentioned that this might be the case with some printers. So, that seems to be okay. Though I haven't printed any actual postage. Namely because I only had the one #10 envelope left.

Not sure when I'll get to doing photo printing...but eventually I'll be dumping a bunch....partly to have hardcopy backup  of my vacation photos, and to send some to my parents....

FedEx does it again!

:##

My Buy.com order (HP Photosmart 8450 and Duplexer), failed to materialize today.

Even though I specifically skipped lunch, and came home to wait for the delivery.

The tracking claims that a delivery attempt was made at 12:42pm, with "Customer not available or Business closed". The problem was that I was home at the time, and still am.

No attempt was made, and no notice of the attempt was left either.

This is the 4th time in a row this has happened this year...I've emailed asking what's going on, but I'll probably get a canned response repeating the comment that is in the tracking report. Ignoring my comments and saying that they'll try again tomorrow.

And, this even ignores that they had emailed me a couple months ago saying that my specific signature would no longer be needed to release packages delivered to residential addresses (as of June 6th?). Which means they could've left it at the apartment office, ignoring that I signed a release to this effect on numerous occasions (and FedEx ground notes that the release is on file and that they left the package with the apartment office, when they deliver and I'm not home).

Back from Vacation Tech Buying Spree?

Well, I've started a small buying spree for tech stuff since my return. Not the kind of instant gratification that I need to drag me out of a depression, more in the stuff I put off until after my return and other stuff that is related to my return.

Namely, I bought more memory for my 'box'. When I made it an 'internal router' for using ivs-status-sniff on it, memory has gotten kind of tight on it. Kind of rough paying twice what I paid for the box to add another 256MB to the box. Still on the fence on whether I want to seekout CPU upgrade options for it.

Then the other major purchase is a new printer. My old Deskjet 970Cxi has been failing (mechanically) for a while now... I guess it has been a pretty good run for 6 years. I'm going with an HP Photosmart 8450 as my next printer. I ordered the duplexer and small tray option for it, and I've ordered some extra cartridges and 4x6 paper. I might need to pick up some letter size later, depending on what strikes my fancy.

Haven't figured out where I'm going to put it though, once it arrives. Kind of bigger than my old printer, and space is limited.

Meanwhile, my current project is to update my photo gallery to include some pictures from the cruise.

Now instead of subjecting some poor random forum to a long rambling thought, I will try to consolidate those things into this blog where they can be more easily ignored profess to be collected thoughts from my mind.
