Using my American Express Reward Points

There's currently a promotion of 20% for using my American Express Reward Points at shopAMEX.

Now, I've been accumulating points since I've been a member of the reward program. I don't recall how long that has been, but it has been slow work to build up to where I'm at.

Now, there was some (bedroom) furniture items that I've been thinking of getting...and because of the current promotion, I found myself browsing for said items on shopAMEX.

And, found that I could get a two of those items using my points. And, the 20% probably the only reason I would consider using my points for purchasing something this way.

So, the items I ordered were a new dresser (my old one is falling in on itself) and a new headboard.

Shortly afterwards, I get an email saying that the order for the dresser (with Wal-Mart.com) was rejected. And, no immediate refund of my points. So, I couldn't go and order from somewhere else....at least not right away.

The later, I got an email from account security about a possible fraud charge from Wal-Mart.com for the dollar amount of the order that I was ordering with points.

I called and said that I didn't use my card at Wal-Mart.com, though it was flagged as suspicious because they tried to charge the same amount twice. Discussing this further, I was then put in contact with shopAMEX to try to resolve the mess that Wal-Mart had caused.

Apparently, the way things work, is the points are turned into cash and credited to my account. And, the reward vendor then charges their order against the card. I was told that since Wal-Mart had rejected my order, I could take the cash value of the reward and use it towards the purchase of the item somewhere else.

Not really feeling things, and the dresser piece was kind of an impulse of get it while I'm at it .... I opted to have my points refunded. I still have until April 10th to take advantage of the 20% deal, so I could try again later. Or I could go somewhere entirely different and get the dresser.

The one that I went with was based on points left over after the headboard...so if not tied to using my points, I might go with something different. In fact, I have been thinking of other changes to the bedroom....though some sort of dresser is still called for.

Hmmm.... :hmm:

Did my 2008 Taxes

Intended to just quickly enter the W2 and 1099 forms, to get a rough idea of how bad I'll owe this year.

But, preliminary findings is that I'll get a refund of $2288 from federal and $384 from state. This is largely due to the deductions of being a home owner....or perhaps entirely....

I'll go sleep on the this...and then review things in closer detail tomorrow and then see about e-filing.

Getting a new Working Assets Visa Card

Apparently, the same credit card information breach that affected my Discover card, also affects my Visa card.

So, I got a letter today informing me of this fact...and they are going to cancel my Visa card and in 5-7 business days I'll get a new one.

Oh yeah...and sorry for the inconvenience. :**:

Guess I need to move automatic charges back to Discover after moving them to Visa....

Got a new Discover Card

Wasn't expecting it, since my expected expiration date is still a few months away.

But, apparently the recent alert on credit card information breech has affected my Discover card...so Discover has issued me a new card with a different expiration date and such to help protect me.

The only problem was that I was planning to get a different card design, but was putting it off until closer to the expiration.

Well, not wanting to wait until my new expiration date....I took the plunge and ordered the design change.

Living Dangerously at DreamHost.com

I had a vague recollection of seeing in some newsletter that there was a chance to live dangerously and get upgraded at DreamHost.com. But, there were some restrictions....as I recall the biggest was the change of path in homedir.

I was fairly certain that b2evolution was safe as well as the various 1-click installed sites I have. But, I did have some other stuff that I knew wasn't. And, I had been meaning to do something about it.

Well, a while back I had fixed that code... or rather removed it because it had stopped working, and I didn't feel like spending a lot of time of rewriting it....so I updated/resurrected a previous version of the code elsewhere. The updating was mostly in updating path names....

While I was looking at upgrading b2evolution from 2.4.5 to 2.4.6, I wondered what about this upgrade offer at DreamHost. So, I went and found the old copy of the newsletter and decided that I would go ahead and click the link.

I guess now I have unlimited space and unlimited bandwidth with dreamhost. Not really a big deal, since I was no where near using a fraction of the space of bandwidth now. One of these days I hope that all changes :>>

Do I really have Obstructive Sleep Apnea?

And, if so....how long have I been suffering?

This latest step in my life started 2 months and 1 day ago. I was having my annual physical the day before I turned the Big 40. I don't recall exactly what led to it, but somewhere during the physical the doctor started asking me questions about my sleep, and coffee consumption (which is down from last year)....though I occasionally resort to other caffeine sources in the afternoon.

The end result, other than the usual blood test (minus cholesterol check, because I had already had one recently since I'm being actively treated for high cholesterol....though I'd be curious what my total cholesterol is...or what my good cholesterol is.) He wanted me to get an Echo-cardiogram, because my heart murmur seems to have gotten more pronounced....though it could just be amplification due to my chest becoming more sunken. And, a sleep study.

The echo-cardiogram was fine.

Meanwhile, I had the sleep study on December 1st. It was a split study, and I know I did doze off during the first part...because I was having my usual, semi-conscious dream... It was starting to get disturbing...when I was woken up to have the CPAP applied, etc.

I don't know when I slept during the second part of things, because when I was woken the next morning...there had been an indeterminate passage of time and no dreams that I could recall.

Lactagen Works! -- a solution for lactose intolerance

Link: http://www.lactagen.com

Many years ago....(~20) I seemed to be slowly developing Lactose Intolerance. At first it was a nuisance. But, it got painful. So, I started struggling to avoid dairy, and having a supply of various forms of Lactaid around when I couldn't. Except I like cheese (most recent is [Smoked] Gouda), and, since coming to K-State, I find I really like Call Hall ice cream. Before in Ohio, it was Graeter's....

Then I discovered Digestive Advantage's Lactose Intolerance pills. This was a one a day pill that could allow me to have dairy. At first I was using it for special things where I didn't want to have to worry about encountering dairy. Like vacations, and other trips. Then when I started working at K-State, it became a daily thing during the summer. I did worry about the long term effect of taking this every day.

Then a couple years ago I got a spam email for Lactagen. I know, I probably should've ignored it. But, I don't think I would've heard of this product otherwise. I wasn't sure if it was real though, and I didn't know if it would work. But, after I got back from winter holidays, I decided that I didn't have anything to lose (especially with the recurring cost of Digestive Advantage) and that I would try it. It was a few more months before I finally did buy it.

But, then reading on how to use it....the need to follow a schedule on consistent and increasing doses, mornings and evenings, etc. I needed to find a time in my schedule where I would be able to stick to something like this.

At first there were a lot of things going on, like work travel and my brother getting married...that I kept pushing the start of Lactagen. Finally I started the process on July 1st, 2007. Figured it would be easy to map the schedule with day of treatment corresponding to the day of the month.

At first it didn't seem to work, because I starting having trouble with dairy soon afterwards. But, I followed the additional therapy instructions...and eventually, I found I was slowly enjoying dairy again.

Now I hardly ever think about it. I had intended to write this posting on (or around) July 1st of this year....but it completely slipped by, because it is something I hardly ever think about anymore.

The National Marrow Donor Program

Link: http://www.nmdp.org/

I am once again a registered Bone Marrow Donor.

Many years ago, I joined the Canadian one....but, then I moved to the US and the information doesn't transfer between countries. Finding a session somewhere in the US where I could get into the US program (for free) was difficult.

However, now that I work at K-State...it has become easier. I found out that they had held a few now and then, but they were mainly advertised to students...so I didn't know they were taking place. Until I read about one in the newspaper....after it had happened and on a Saturday.

Then one day, I saw it written on a sidewalk. So, I walked in and registered.

Meanwhile, something tells me that there should be a blood drive at the University soon, but I can't find any to register for at the givelife.org site.....

So, what did UPS bring me today?

Well, there were 3 boxes from Amazon.com.

I started out thinking there were things I needed, or wanted to stock up on, or have in preparation for other acquisitions. But, then I trimmed it back to keep under budget...and I'm not sure I ended up with stuff I really needed.

First, the mouse on this computer is not moving around as well as it could. Not sure if the mousepad is getting gummed up (its a 3M Precise Mousing Surface pad, so maybe....) or the mouse bottom is getting gummed up, especially since the teflon pads have migrated around the bottom...so maybe that adhesive is what is gumming things up. So, I bought a new mouse and a new 3M Precise Mousing Surface pad.

Next, I was thinking of getting the Netflix Roku player. I doesn't come with an HDMI to DVI cable....and I would need one to connect it to my system. So, I got out of these. Of course, now I don't think I'll get the Netflix Roku. Because based on reviews...its not quite DVD quality, which since I do DVDs in an upconversion player...would likely be quite a step back. It also doesn't do 5.1, which I figured I could live with since my initial interest is watching old TV shows (namely old Doctor Who shows). So, there's probably no immersive sound field to get into....though I'm the guy that watches all his DVDs with subtitles, because I don't hear dialog all that well.

But, a review I watched recently, says the Netflix Roku player doesn't do subtitles either. So, that has pretty much shelved my interest to get one for the time being.

Third, or rather, in the box with the mouse and in the box that had the HDMI cable (the 3M mousing surface came in a 2nd day air envelope)....was a roll of duct tape. The one roll of duct tape that I could find the last time I needed to do a patch....disappeared. The building people had been in doing some other work, and I suspect they packed it off along with theirs when they left. But, I wasn't home when they came to do the work, etc. So, I don't know what really happened to it...except that it was on my dryer, which they moved and rearranged stuff around to do their work....and now I can't find it anywhere. One is regular duct tape of the same kind that had gone missing. And, another roll was acquired only because it said it was purple. Of course, its not the purple I was thinking it would be. Oh well. :P

The other two boxes from UPS?
