Upcoming 'box' upgrade

According to UPS, an IBM NetVista off-lease refurb Celeron 1.8Ghz with 256MB/40GB/CDRW/NO-OS machine that I ordered to replace my current 'box' will arrive on Monday. The old 'box' was an off-lease from a state auction (via eBay) Celeron 433MHz with 128MB/6.4GB/CDROM/NO-OS box....

Meanwhile, it just occurred to me...that after the upgrade, this Linux machine known as 'box' will move from being my slowest BOINC minion to 2nd or 3rd place....well, there's only 4 minions.

Today is a bad day for the box

In my morning check of my systems, I found that box wasn't responding....

I figured at first that the scheduled mondoarchive of the system had run long (which I normally run at 6 month intervals....March and September....kind of surprised that March had snuck up on me).

So, I went on to box to take a look at what it was doing....and it was bad. The harddrive had failed a minute into the backup. Strange that's when the previous harddrive failed. Perhaps it wasn't a harddrive problem last time...but a more serious system problem.

Wonder if I can afford to replace it. :**:

The bigger problem is what do I do in the mean time. Can I recover enough to resurrect this critical piece of my home network? How are the remaining bits even working...the machine is my local DNS server, hmmm....starting to have trouble accessing sites on the Internet.... and it is also my DHCP server. And, it is a router to part of my network.... :??:

Can never have enough memory

:`( or something like that.

Lately, things have been getting slower and slower on most of my machines. In part due to running more and newer applications.

So, I'm looking at buying more memory for the computers I have, that can be upgraded. And, looking at the upgrade plan to see where the other machines might fall.

Taking apart a Maxtor OneTouch II external hard drive

I have been searching the Internet hoping to find the details on what opening up a Maxtor OneTouch II might entail. Not because the drive has failed or something, but because I'm getting annoyed that everytime I reboot my computer, the drives disappear and I need to 'update the driver' in order to get the computer to detect them correctly and make them available. :**:

While the one connected to a W2K Professional box has had no such issues, it is a WXP Professional box that another pair of these are connected to.

Today, I finally found a site that had information on it.

Verbatim DVD+R DL 10 pack

Well, while I was over a the mall picking up a prescription....I decided to check out what is out there in Verbatim DVD DL media.

My usual preference is DVD-R, though DVD+R seems more widely available. I wasn't sure if I was going to buy, it was more to see how much. Though I want to burn those images for "Strange Days at Blake Holsey High" that I've been working on. Namely because I've run out of space to have both images and the raw input data on my system....actually, I can't get to working on "Conclusions" until I address my space problem.

First I checked Walmart, because that's where my prescription refill was waiting at, they had the 3pk for $11.88.

I then walked over to Best Buy, and then decided to go past them and check out OfficeMax first.

In OfficeMax I spotted that they had the 10pk for $19.99 after instant rebate. Well, for that price, I couldn't pass on I snapped it up and that concluded my shopping trip.

Now to burn Season's 1, 2 and 3 to DVDs and try them out....wonder if there's a marathon in my future. Kind of bad, since I have purchased DVDs that need watching (namely the Firefly TV DVDs, and then the Serenity movie DVD....)

Right-click is slow or weird behavior caused by context menu handlers

 While laying in bed, getting ready to face the new day, an idea popped into my head.

I should hit Google and try to solve an annoyance that had happened to my computers that I couldn't figure out when it started, etc.

At first I searched on progressively longer search of "right click multiple open no longer works", finally a few pages in....I found a dated blog entry about ContentMenuHandlers and there being a bad entry. Though the blog entry solution was delete everything, except maybe the real obvious ones that won't be broken.

I didn't like that solution.

So searching on just "ContextMenuHandlers" I eventually found the above page. I opted for method 2, and tried to download ShellExView. Clicking on the redirection link in the article didn't work, so I used Google to find me a direct link (though I could've bypassed the redirect if I was more awake...they both found the same location).

Going through the non-Microsoft Context Menu handlers...I eventually found the offending handler. Scrolling further right, I found that ShellExView also tells me when the handler was installed (I had figured it would be something 'recent', but didn't know how to track down when a handler had been installed under 'method 1'.)

Turned out on January 6th, I installed "WhoLockMe". Something I installed, but have never used. There was a reason that day that I thought it would help me, but I probably ended up rebooting instead...and then forgot all about it.

Though it was during a period of time when I was having lots of other issues/conflicts with other installations....such as the scanner and TurboTax....

How to use the Blackberry 7100 as a GPRS Modem

I've been meaning to try this with my BB7100t for a long time, and because part of me has started to worry about what I'll do for Internet access should I find that next opportunity and have to move....I finally started looking into again.

At first it didn't seem to want to work....but after repairing my BBdm installation and uninstalling/reinstalling drivers and rebooting a whole bunch of times, it finally appeared and I was able to create a modem and connection for it. :)

Then I successfully connected and played around a little bit. It has been a long time since I've been online using something other than broadband....even slow broadband (such as satellite from a cruise ship) was better than what I was getting. Basically it was comparable to dial-up. :p

Using the speed test at, I recorded a speed of 26 down and 8 up. Which seems in line with what I recall reading somewhere.

Using a smaller/different test, I was able to record a speed of 38k. GPRS is probably not that well suited to large file transfers....

At least now I know that I'll have another option for connecting to the net.

TurboTax Premier 2005

Well, decided that today would be a good day to....

ummm....okay, install TurboTax.

The install was pretty ordinary, but since the reason to install now was to be hitting them up for the regular updates that come out....I started it up and tried to do an update.

New Scanner is here....

....and it is a bust.

Installed the software, restarted....restarted....restarted....restarted....:##

Uninstalled the software....restarted....installed newer version of the software (actually it was try to upgrade software, which caused the uninstall/restart, then install)....restarted....restarted....restarted....:##

Seems there's a conflict between the scanner driver and other services, namely the UPS management software. :**:

Uninstall everything...restarted....restarted....restarted....>:XX

It messed something up on my system, and I can't get things to work again.

Try using the dreaded "System Restore"......

:??: There's only two restore points :??:

And, they were intermediate points during the initial software installation :!:

Use the oldest one anyways.....yeah, my machine started all the way through again! :.

What am I going to do with the scanner now? haven't even gotten to try connecting it yet

Now instead of subjecting some poor random forum to a long rambling thought, I will try to consolidate those things into this blog where they can be more easily ignored profess to be collected thoughts from my mind.
