For a long time, I've been running a 6 drive RAID 10 array of Hitachi 5K3000 2TB drives in Orac for backuppc. This configuration got me at 5.4TB array, and somewhat better performance than when I tried a RAID6 configuration. But, eventually, I kept running out of space and the price of harddrives went up so expanding the array over time didn't happen as I had hoped. Being RAID10, the options were other concat another array, either 2 in RAID1 or 4 in RAID10 or 4 as 2 RAID1....using volume manager. Or maybe see if RAID10 would deal with having all 6 drives upgraded to 3TB, though hadn't considered the transition of 512 to 4k and how it would cope with that.
Though I did, eventually find out when I upgraded a 1.5TB RAID1 set to become a 2TB RAID1 set....going from ST31500341AS to ST2000DL003, where I contributed my experience here: http://askubuntu.com/questions/141669/creating-properly-aligned-partitions-on-a-replacement-disk/ Though it first started because one of the ST31500341AS drives had failed.
Before the failure of one of the 1.5TB drives in the above mentioned RAID1 set, I had 4 ST31500341AS in a RAID5 on old-Zen. It had been done in under RR622, under Windows, and NTFS partitions, etc. I had tried copying the data at various times, not really having anywhere that would hold the data elsewhere...but wanting to get it over to FreeBSD for recovery. While I got the rr622 driver working, and it saw that I had a single array (rather than the native driver that would see the 4 individual disks.) I couldn't get access to the data. Though it had worked when I was previously playing around with Xen (had tried copying it then....to a 2 1TB RAID0 set, but then one of the 1TB drives died....so I lost the copy, I had then replaced it with a 2TB RAID1 set....using an ST2000DL003 and an ST2000DM003, the DL being a 5900RPM drive and having a 5 year warranty...while the DM drive is a 7200RPM drive, but with only a 1 year warranty. And, turns out the 1 year is generous.
At work, I had built my FreeBSD desktop using a pair of the ST1000DM003 drives...and 3 drive failures later....it is now a pair of ST2000DL003 drives. Yeah...I was having trouble with the array, and apparently using XFS was a mistake too...because I thought it was recovering, but instead it was slowly eating the data. When I had nuked the RR622 RAID5 array, and had switched to using it as JBOD and create a RAIDZ set under FreeBSD...I found that there was nothing to copy back from the RAID1 array. D'Oh!
Though I had also copied the Microsoft WindowsImageBackup files, to see if I could mount the VHD file under VirtualBox to help in recovery. I largely had the data in bits and pieces elsewhere, it was the environment I was wanting to recreate...and Oops!Backup didn't back up that part anyways (the data I was mainly trying to migrate). The image mounted, and I could see it...but soon after Windows would try to fix it and then it would disappear....kind of like what it did on February 15th to make the original Zen go away. No idea what kind of disk rotting the Intel Matrix RAID had been doing, when it had to initialize the array again every time after a Windows crash. I've had Ubuntu crashes, but the RAID arrays remained stable...usually. While Windows & Intel RST....it was pretty much every time. I'm sure it was slowly corrupting things overtime to where things wouldn't recover, though it choose to do that after an automatic reboot for Windows updates...and the day before I left for my first Gallifrey One made things even more annoying.
Anyway with another 1.5TB drive freed up, I contemplated adding it to the RAIDZ I had made of the 4 1.5TB drives, keeping it as a hot spare, or just use it by itself -- living dangerously. I ended up with the latter for some temporary data. Because in my mind I was starting to lean to what happened next.

Back on December 18th, Orac went down unexpectedly....it was shortly after I turned on the heat that morning. So, at first I thought it was a heat problem. I directed fans at it, dropped in a slot cooler, scaled back BOINC (eventually suspended it). But, Orac would suddenly stop. I watched thermal monitoring in cacti, and it CPU temps weren't hugely different than before. After a while, I had to go to work...so I left it off while I mulled options.
I tried changing the rear case cooler (when I had it open to add a slot cooler and check the other fans), I had bought a 92mm fan with the plan to replace that...but I discovered that I had bought the wrong kind. Probably could've made it work, but opted to try again. I don't recall if I ever checked if the CPU fan was okay. Last time I had cleared out a lot of dust from it....it wasn't full of dust this time, is all I recall.
After some more fiddling I started to suspect power supply, I had been thinking of getting a bigger power supply for it for a while...so I went ahead and got one, a Corsair Builder Series CX V2 500-Watt 80 Plus Certified Power Supply - CMPSU-500CXV2, along with different 92mm fan (a Zalman ZM-F2Plus 92mm Silent Fan). Mulling things some more and reading other online articles...I then added some more items to my order, like new thermal compound and a CPU cooler -- a Thermaltake TR2 M21 RX A4021 CPU Cooler for the Intel Processor 115W LGA775-Prescott -- which later turned out to be the wrong kind....need a 4 pin fan for CPU. Though wasn't convinced I needed a new cooler.... But, the stock cooler was rated for 95W, and Intel's website says my CPU does 105W.
Even though I got the new power supply on 22nd, and I took the 23rd off from work...I didn't get around to actually working on it until late on the 24th (after it was too late to get anything one-day Prim for the 27th.) It was quite an ordeal getting the power supply in...had to pop the fan off the CPU heat sink to get access to all the connectors and stuff. Put the fan back on too soon, so had to get it off a second time. This time it broke. Well, I guess I swap the cooler after all. Except then I discover that the new cooler I had gotten was the wrong kind. So, I go to Amazon to see if I can quickly get a different one. No luck there....so order one by regular 2-day Prime. I went with a Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2 - 92 mm - 130W.
Original fan and the previous one I ordered, were the kind that blow to the CPU. This one has heat pipes and blows across. Reading reviews, I saw warnings about how much taller these things are and whether it would fit...so I decided that 92mm something was probably the safe maximum to consider. After narrowing through the choices via Amazon Prime...it came down to the one I got or the Arctic Cooling Freezer 13 Cooling - 200W. Since, I had about 72 hours to place the order...I held off, to see if there was anything else I wanted to add before ordering. Mistake. Later on Christmas day, the prices on lots of things...specifically these CPU coolers went up. And, the 13 went out of stock (by Prime.) Though I had decided the 7 was the more likely choice, since I didn't know which way I should position the cooler and it had four way flexibility. Though I suppose others would have the flexibility too...its been so long since I've done this kind of thing...I don't know.
Anyways...I finished putting orac back together with its new power supply, moved the slot cooler to the bottom. Removed the old heat sink/cooler (should've kept the parts though) and cleaned off the CPU. And, set Orac aside for later work.

Winter has been weird this year...but there's a winter storm alert finally? Though its the rain and snow kind with ice accumulation and inches of snow type. Just as long as it isn't another icepocalyse of 4 years ago.
Though seems interesting that the computer I bought to replace the one I lost during the icepocalyse, died on Friday. Almost as if it was designed to die after 4 years. Annoyed, because its orac, my backuppc/file server. There's 16 drives on the machine, a total raw storage of 23TB....though only about 11.5 usable TB. And, a whole lot less in TiBs.
I'm hoping its something simple though....was looking at the hardware monitor in the BIOS screen...where it reads out voltages...and the lower voltages are low....though are those from the supply or are those generated on the motherboard? Seemed to me that motherboard generates some of the values, but not sure what I'll do if that's the case.
Also seems odd that it died shortly after I turned on heat Friday morning. Anyways...I had been considering getting a new power supply for orac for other reasons, so I jumped over to Amazon and took the plunge to get a new one by Amazon Prime. I had also been meaning to upgrade the case fan on it orac....I mentioned this before....stock fan is 80mm, but there's holes for a bigger fan. I had/have some extra ones around, so I had tried those...except that my extras are too big...so not 120mm. So, I had looked at 92mm, and I did end up with one, but failed to notice that it wasn't a 3-pin fan. So, maybe I'll add one of those to.
So, cart is adding up...and I'm looking at items I have 'saved for later'....and well, new humidifier is among there. Its pretty expensive....~$88 Its an Essick Air Tower Humidifier, though its about the same price as what my old Essick Air unit...though thinking the tower form would work better with where I've been using the old one, plus the old one's fan has become the issue... Though I guess its only 2 years old. I wish I could find something like the humidifier I had back when I was in Medicine Hat....while it eventually got nasty inside, that thing worked well for years and wasn't that expensive as I recall. And, it was easy to fill too. Since, then...I guess the Essick Air is the first one that I got more than one season out of....two whole ones, in fact (though some debate as to how well near the end.) And, it did a good job too. Plus the tower I'm looking at, uses the same wicks as the old one...so I already have an extra set somewhere.
Though having an extra set of wicks isn't a requirement for what I get...though footprint and output are...and pretty much I think wick types are the only kind I'll consider now. And, brand isn't necessarily a requirement...though past experience with other brands has made me leary of others. Plus there's feature differences. Some do take less space, but only have one tank. But, I'm running this single humidifier to try to humidify my entire condo...so it does have to be big as well... But, have time before I have to complete the order...so reviewing all the results....wouldn't be so painful if amazon's search was so fuzzy. I'm searching for just "humidifier", and its showing me things like cribs, pillows, swaddles, bassinets, dehumidifiers, evaporator coolers, air purifiers, bottle brush, nipple cleaner, heaters, bonsai tree, air conditioners...though the cigar related humidifiers probably aren't out of line, though I don't really think they should be in the department I'm searching under. And, the further out...finding humidifiers becomes less and less likely, but sometimes there'll be one here and there....though I'm sure if they weren't so fuzzy, I wouldn't have 10x the results to wade through....though sometimes the result is way near the end. But, not this time.
Anyways...that's pretty much what should just be in my amazon cart. But, if I add a few more items, I can get 6-month do not pay on my Amazon card....and I've already put off getting the humidifier too long already.

Because one of the 1TB RAID1 drives was starting to fail...I was looking at options to replace it.
I original had a plan to upgraded one of my 1.5TB RAID1's to a pair of 2TB drives....freeing one of the 1.5TB drives to test out the OCE/ORLM feature of the RR622 & TR5M-BP on Zen...converting the current 2x1.5TB RAID0 to a 3x1.5TB RAID5 (or perhaps 4x1.5TB) Oops!Backup seems to be doing well and its filling up the space, I'm sure there's a setting to tell it not to, but not an issue at the moment. Guess I should buy it before the 30 day trial runs out.
At first I was looking at new 1TB drives....though for $20 more I could get 2TB drives, the same kind as the 6x2TB RAID10. The 1TB and 1.5TB drives have been 7200RPM (as were all previous drives)....the Hitachi's are the first of the greener drives....5940RPM. Given that I'm doing PM RAID in a first gen PCI Express box, I'm probably still not seeing the full potential of the greener drives.
Two years ago I bought a pair of 1TB drives from NewEgg.
This being first Sunday and all, mdadm checkarray ran on Orac for several of the arrays (the 3 arrays that share the 5-bay port multiplier enclosures are excluded, and get run individually later....since running at the same time is slow)
Anyways....1 of the 1TB drives spat lots of errors....and Orac is pausing now as it spits errors now and then. Guess I'll look to getting a new 1TB drive via Amazon Prime?
I was curious, and went to check warranty status on Seagate....nope. Really, went over to NewEgg to see when I had gotten the drives and what kind of warranty it had.... Only a 2 year warranty. Guess that's that.
Wonder if I should buy one new drive, two new drives....and if I go two new drives....should I get bigger ones? They don't fit the original expansion plan I had....plus my usage has grown to where the old plan doesn't work anymore....
Well, thought it was going to be another quick project....ended up taking the whole afternoon and then some.
I had gotten some speaker options using Amazon Prime, so that I could swap out the old 17" LCD monitor with built-in speakers for the Vison 21.6" MW22E-BAD monitor that had been bumped from Zen recently.
I decided I wanted something <$25 and USB powered, and I bought two choices...figuring that the other would go on Orac, since I've been wanting sound on there too for a while. I went a Coby Portable MP3 Speaker System CSMP48, Black and an Altec Lansing iML237USB ORBIT Ultra Portable USB-Powered Speaker.
I decided that I got with connecting the Coby to Gumby and putting it below the monitor...turned out it was the only one for the situation. The Coby has a 3.5mm jack to connect to the output and a mini USB jack with cable to power it. While the Altec only has the USB cord...it isn't just powered by USB, but it does its own sound. While that would work on either computer, it wasn't really what I had in mind for Gumby....or Orac. So, the Coby went in place and then I went to work on swapping the Vison 21.6" monitor into place.
Things looked weird on all computers, since I had to tell each computer about the change in display.
Gumby, Windows XP was a problem...in that it wouldn't let me set 1680x1050 at first. Eventually, I uninstalled the driver, rebooted and now it shows tons of modes that I'm not interested in. I set it to 1680x1050 and 60Hz and triggered an autoconf and done. I didn't decide on 60Hz right away, but that's where I settled. The other choices were 70Hz and 75Hz.
Then, BOX....I used the Monitor app to change things and it saw that the monitor was different and settled on 1680x1050 and 70Hz (again not first choice, but where I settled). Why...when they were all 75Hz...the had slightly different ideas on where the image was centered, so I went with 3 different verticals so the monitor would have the desktop properly positioned for all 3. Wonder what I'll do when I get LHAVEN going?
Then ORAC, which was harder....the Monitor app wouldn't see that resolution, and reconfigure has apparently gone away. Eventually, I discovered xrandr and cvt and got it working. As 1680x1050 and 75Hz.
Well, Orac was being somewhat unresponsive this morning.... Looks like early this morning the system stopped answering to Cacti, with the temperature of the GPU rising to a new high. Don't know what the high would've been, because there was no snmp data for a while. GPU temp did recover, but the display did not.
Ended up rebooting, needed the excuse to see external journal work....
Once backup, I switched back to internal journal...but one of maximum size rather than default size. And, then shutdown the system to extract the PCI Compact Flash card. During the reboot to see external journal work...I realized that I wasn't likely to see much performance gain from getting faster compact flash since the card itself was only UDMA/66. So the 133x CF is already faster than the card?
Probably should've fsck'd manually after the switch back....some discussion thread suggested doing this after fiddling with journal settings. But, its fsck'ng now after the boot back up. Apparently superblock had invalid external journal superblock hint? And, auto fsck failed, requiring manual fsck.
Downside of internal journal is that it can only be a max of 400MB (an improvement from the 128MB default I had before)...but that's only like 0.01% of my total space. And, there was a discussion thread that seemed to suggest a journal size of 0.2% would yield better improvement....I didn't do the whole 16GB CF card...though wonder how much that would've helped.... But 0.2% would call for a journal of ~10.9GB. Suppose I could turn off data journaling, especially since there are files that backuppc puts down that are bigger than the 400MB journal. Though I think the ordered/writeback modes usually just do metadata journaling, while I had switched it to data journaling when I was playing with external journals...but I didn't switch it back.
Wonder which of writeback or ordered would be more optimal for this FS?
The other day when I was shopping for quieter 120mm fan for my TR5M-BP enclosure, I thought about getting a bigger/better fan for Orac. I knew there were holes to take a fan larger than the one that was current in it.
Though I guess I should've measured or something. Because after I had the old fan out and things apart...found the fan that I had gotten was too big. I started putting things back, when I decided I might as well do the other things I wanted to do.
First the mirror of the internal RAID1 was failing.....the original had failed early and I exchanged it for a recertified one from Seagate and put in a different drive. Interesting that the warranty of the replacement drive seems to have expired, while the warranty of the original ST3500630AS is still active.
I was trying to decide if I buy a new 500GB drive, or put the recertified one in. Seeing as I had things open...and I hadn't bought a new drive yet. I put the recertified one in. I also had that project to put in a PCI compact flash card in. Though I hadn't gotten the desired compact flash card, yet. But, did have a 16GB 133x card sitting around...so I decided use that for now. The 8GB 600x card will have to come later.
I then put everything back...and watched to take forever to boot....the PCI compact flash card seems to slow the boot down a lot, and I don't know why. Maybe I don't want it now. May need to rethink the experiment. Perhaps when I get a correct sized fan and open it up next.
And, then it didn't....guess in everything, I forgot to reconnect the case fan. Oh well, the silly clamp does a lousy job holding the unsupported slot covers in place...and putting cables back in, the bracket pushed in. They probably knew that since the blank has a hook on it, but the eSATA bracket is a regular kind...but no room to slip a screw in to properly secure it.
So, opened things up and then tried it all again.
Oh yeah, while I had it open the first time, I noticed the CPU heatsink was all full of dust, so I blew that out.
Well, things came up slowly....of course the boot RAID1 was degraded. I then sfdisk'd the new drive, and added it back to the md0/md1....should be done in an hour or so (from now, not when I added it...)
And, then went to fiddle with the compact flash card as an external journal of an ext4 filesystem. Forgot that I was originally playing around with the idea of external bitmaps when I had gotten the idea for the compact flash....but concluded that it wasn't going to work, there's no way to have a filesystem exist during that stage of boot. Not sure if an external journal helps with performance or not....might have been something back when I was doing RAID5/6....but not sure its important enough with RAID10. Don't really have any way to measure if it makes any real-world improvement to what I'm doing.
Meanwhile...I updated cacti, the card shifted all my drives around.... And, seems the CPU is now running a bit cooler than it was before....but the GPU is running hotter than before.
Guess clearing the dust out of the heatsink was good, but adding the PCI card was bad.
I think keep things cool is more important than the external journal experiment...so I will probably yank the compact flash card out when I get the new fan. Wonder if a PCI slot cooler would be something I put in instead?
That is Gumby was torturing me!
It all started around May 13, 2010....and could ended around...sometime back in April, 2011...but had to let it drag on to today...July 23, 2011.
Gumby had been torturing me more and more lately....largely because when I upgraded it in May 13, 2010...it became my second fastest system at home, and my fastest Windows XP box. Ole TARDIS was only a Pentium 4 3.2GHz w/HT. While new Gumby is a Pentium D 3.4GHz.
Though while TARDIS was still my main Windows XP system, I largely kept Gumby's role the same...though it did pick up a few things the ole Gumby didn't do, due to it having more juice and being less cluttered in its registry and driver hell. Like a new DVD burner, or running a few more CPU and/or memory intensive apps (things that didn't work to well on P3-933MHz and/or only a max of 512MB...)
But, the problem with new Gumby was that its a legacy free box. No PS/2 mouse or keyboard ports (though it's strange that I can still buy new systems that have one or two PS/2 ports, something about the reliability of PS/2 mouse and/or keyboard over USB probably... this KVM switch was kind of holding up whether or not I would be requiring PS/2 ports on whatever mobo I decide to build the new LHAVEN around.)
I had gotten USB PS/2 adapters to keep using my old keyboard/mouse and KVM setup on Gumby (though the keyboard and mouse have upgraded a few times since the Trendnet TK-408) Also, I think the mouse has always been a USB kind with a PS/2 adapter. Originally a ball type, now an optical type....some day I'll get some laser mice here and there...
Problem was that the USB PS/2 adapter was less than reliable or usable. I was still using the Kingwin one that I got to start with new Gumby. Which worked the best, except that every now and the the mouse would stop responding. I could have to stop using the mouse for a while, and it had to be absolutely still during the stop....and then something would reset and it would work again. I had tried a TrendNet, thinking it would go with the KVM....but switching away and then back on the KVM would cause the scrollwheel functionality to go away, and that required me to unplug/replug the USB adapter to get scrollwheel working again.
I also tried a PCI PS/2 card, but found that internally was just another USB PS/2 adapter...just in a slot consuming form, plus it didn't get along with the other PCI card (firewire, and I use firewire external storage on Gumby)...also it exhibited the same problem that the TrendNet USB PS/2 adapter did, except that its a little harder to unplug the card to reset it at will...
So, I stayed with the KingWin and set my sight on a KVM.
This is an owed post (of over 3 months in the making....) I had thought of lots of things to write for this since I meant to write it, but didn't write anything. And, now its so old...that I'm just going to be really terse....
The lead in to this posting was Worked on Orac yesterday. So, I got those 5 2TB drives...and first tried to make it RAID5 using mdadm. And, started filling it up....though the performance didn't seem to be much better using XFS, plus the new backuppc seemed to have regressed on handling XFS.... so I heard about ZFS on Linux....as kernel modules that do the taint. And, tried out RAIDZ, with its variable striping to maybe to do better on performance. It seemed nice, but then stack dumps filling up my logs....rebooted and then did a zpool scrub, and it went to work fixing lots and lots of errors, and then a few unrecoverable errors.
Guess no ZFS, and the XFS didn't seem enough of a gain to make it different from everything else. Even though there's one really big problem with ext4. Resizing it causes corruption. Supposed to be fixed now, but before I switched to the new array, I grew the backuppc volume for 3.75TB to 3.8TB, offline...and it resulted in corruption still.
So, I was making the new backuppc volume the full size of the array. As I mulled over the situtation...I decided that I would try RAID10, sure that wouldn't get as huge a boost over the old RAID6 array of 1.5TB, but it would still be an increase...and no idea what I'm going to do when I need more space. But, first I had to get a 6th 2TB drive to do RAID10. Plus it would mean that I would need to do something else with the 1.5TB drives. One was going to have to come out. Sure it could run degraded initially (though did find that it would come back after a reboot, guess the boot making degraded arrays come online...only does it for OS filesystems. Though the boot get's stuck because it can't mount filesystems and the recovery of mounting just doesn't work still. Getting into single user is such a pain too. Though after I broke my sudoers file recently, I turned off hiddenmenu.
The hard part about making the RAID10, was figuring out the ordering of devs...so that it was mirror across the eSATA channels and stripping with in. There's only 2 channels, and 6 drives in this array...so figured that was the best way to go. Though now that I've realized that its only PCI express 1.0, not sure if that was the best way to go. Though to try the other, would call for me to get 8 drives? And, who knows what the future holds for supporting backuppc....
internal bitmap on doesn't seem to degrade the RAID10 as much as RAID5 or RAID6, so I have that turned on now.
Now there was the question of what to do with the 4 remaining drive bays and the 4 1.5TB drives. Would I got with another RAID10, a couple of RAID1...would I concat them into the LVM for growth or make them separate.
Well, on the old 1TB array was my old MMC volume, which needed more space and part of the 5x1.5TB RAID6 was a backup volume...also in need of more space. I decided that I would go with two separate RAID1s using the Seagate 1.5TB drives (I had pulled the Samsung 1.5TB to make it degraded....that drive has since been hooked up to TARDIS for local backups).
Around this time, my Roku appeared...and I went through the various attempts to map a network drive to it for local content. Settling on the HSTI Media Stick and its 1TB maximum. I settled on going with 2 1.5TB RAID1 arrays. One of them was made fully available to be the new MMC volume. And, the other...I made a 1TB volume (called TARDIS) for the HSTI Media Stick, and the rest became the new backup volume.
The old 1TB RAID1 array stayed online, until it was recently repurposed into the volume for Time Machine backups (only 931GB).
Now I've been debating playing around with external bitmaps and/or external journaling to see if I can get more performance. But, external bitmaps go away after a reboot, and that just seems to be a bug that isn't going to get fixed anytime soon. external journaling would require me to find some devices for that....so I got the idea of PCI Compact Flash adapter and some compact flash cards....I have a couple of the PCI Compact Flash adapters....and I do have a few compact flash cards around. Though when I was playing around with ReadyBoost on Zen, I found they weren't really that great on speed. And, I was going to want to get as much speed out of things as I could here....so I did some checking and now I'm waiting to get around to buying some 600x CF cards to get around to trying this. The fastest card I have available in my collection is a 133x. And, I don't recall why I bought that one. Ones earlier than that would be left overs from when I had my PowerShot S20, then an REB1200 and then a Nikon Coolpix 5700.
These days, I'm all about the SD cards for my digital cameras (Eye-Fi), though been thinking of getting an ultracompact (and wearing my holster less often)....and some that I've looked at use MicroSD cards. Don't have any extra Class 10 ones laying about though....though I do have a couple of Class 6 8GB cards that need a home (I got them in a 2for1 sale, and the need for 1 didn't happen as planned....and when I do get around to getting that device, I'm sure I'll probably cave and get a 16GB or 32GB Class 10 MicroSD card.)
