Terk HDTVa Amplified HDTV Antenna

In my continuing quest to receive Fox in HD, I picked up this antenna....which says it can get signals up to 45 miles away (Fox-HD is ~43 miles away).

Unfortunately, this didn't work out. I'll switch back to my HDTVlp in a bit, because it works better at pulling in the one OTA HDTV station that I can get.

Terk HDTVlp Amplified HDTV Antenna

During the holidays, I got to thinking again that I would really like someway to receive FOX HDTV (as well as any other OTA HDTV that I could get to help relieve the load on the Cox HD DVR)....

Before moving here to Manhattan, KS...some one had mentioned the Terk HDTVlp antenna as one that I might need to consider.

When I got here, I did set up on of my OTA HDTV Tuners...and try the non-amplified directional HDTV antennas (ZHDTV1) that I was previously using in Dublin, OH to receive OTA HD. It couldn't find any signal at all. Given that the nearest antenna is about ~32 miles away (CBS) and the one that I'm most interested in is ~43 miles away (FOX)...and in the opposite direction from all the rest (CBS, ABC, NBC, PBS).

Well, I finally scored an HDTVlp antenna...and set it up today. It didn't pan out....the only station I can pull in is WIBW-DT, which is the CBS stations that is ~32 miles away. I tried various orientations of the antenna, but it only affected how well it would receive CBS.... :..(

Now I'm trying to decide if I'll take the chance and buy another amplified antenna.... Perhaps something a bit more directional.

Meanwhile, I'm also trying to decide if I'll use the fact that I can at least get CBS....and take the load off of my Cox HD DVR some. It'll likely be to record HD content that I don't currently record using the HD DVR or content that I'm willing to sacrifice....

Oops, that was fast.

I had started the quest to research what cordless phone I would get to replace my current 5.8Ghz one, since it doesn't get along with the Amphony 1520.

I had kind of narrowed it down to a 2.4Ghz phone that I had come across on eBay, a Uniden DCT646-3. Well, I bought it. )-o

At first I was questing for a 900MHz phone...but there doesn't seem to be much (or any) in the way of *NEW* digital (DSS) 900Mhz phones. Making it even harder to find one with the features that I would want. Namely handset speaker phone, multi-handset capable or included, VMWI, CID.

I know that 2.4GHz and WiFi don't get along...but consensus is that WiFi doesn't prevent a 2.4Ghz phone from working and the 2.4GHz phone only causes performance degradation to the WiFi. And, in the congested 2.4GHz that is life in a condo, near apartments, near a major university....it is kind of something I'm stuck with. Plus it is still my plan at some point to replace the bridge portion of my WiFi network with something else.

Like the phone demarc is in the room where the DSL modem is, and the condo is wired with CAT5....so maybe I'll put the DSL modem directly on the incoming line? And, use the condo's CAT5 for networking. Though my Living Room is laid out wrong for this to really work right now...and no plans to move the main computer to the other bedroom. But, if I did move the computer, than it could be a definite possibility. Or the condo's CAT5 would only link the Living Room to the 'computer' room. And, I would keep WiFi for the stuff in the LivingRoom. On the basis that they are close enough to cope....plus I still want WiFi for my DPH-540 and my laptop(s).

New Automatic S-Video Switcher

Link: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=621262&CatId=85

Got an unexpected surprise from UPS today. I ordered this on the weekend, and had no indication that it had been shipped...so I wasn't expecting it today...given that yesterday was a holiday for some people (there are no holidays...or weekends...when you are unemployed :..( )

A few days ago, I was wondering why a program I was watching from downconverted HDTV seemed almost black and white....just the hint of color. Wasn't until I noticed that the commercial advance indicator was also affected, that I figured that it was something wrong in my connections.

Eventually, I found that temporarily switching to another source and back would clear up the problem....temporarily. :**:

As it happened, the ReplayTV I was watching was the one that directly connects to the Sima SVS-4 (rather than the others that go through Sony SB-V55A boxes).

So, I guess that means the Sima SVS-4 4-input/2-output automatic S-video switcher was dying. I had acquired it used from eBay, and it replaced a Sima SVS-4D that also had problems. I thought about scoping out eBay for another such unit, but decided that I would probably prefer something new this time.

SA8300HD DVR Let Down

Well, last night my SA8300HD DVR let me down. :..(

Whenever possible, I've been double recording....especially the shows that I really do want to watch in HD.

Double recording in that inaddition to have the SA8300HD DVR record the show, I also recorded the downconverted HD from OTA HDTV onto a ReplayTV. Though ABC and FOX had priority for getting scheduled into my ReplayTV, because these aren't available by cable (darn Sinclair Broadcast, forcing the public to use other means to get those shows if they get missed....now I'd get a Video iPod if it did 16:9....)

Well, last night there were shows on FOX/ABC that I couldn't do double recording....well, normally there isn't, but there was a movie on FOX last night....so I opted to record that instead of my regular shows.

The SA8300HD DVR decided to lock up and reboot during the recording of a couple of shows last night....so now I don't have these shows from HD, even though the shows were from CBS and NBC....I could probably have rationalized watching what it had recorded if the crash had been at or near the start or perhaps in the middle. But the it lopped of the ends of the shows. It may as well not have recorded it at all if it was going to do that to me.

UPN53 bites the dust

After watching a large number of bad recordings of stuff from NBC-HD, I decided, last night, that I really should check the aim of my antennas.

After going through the channels and tweaking the antenna around trying to see if I can find a sweet spot that can receive all the stations, which exist in 3 different directions from my QTH.

Basically, I found a spot where I could get everything except PBS...or UPN. PBS is a problem because it is much further off from the other two directions, while UPN is much further away than the other stations.

Last night, I opted to leave out PBS, because I so rarely record anything from it.

This morning I changed my mind, as I found the desire to record something from PBS.

I decided that it was time to remove UPN from my OTA HDTV recordings. Of course, it is WWHO/UPN53's fault. For unknown reasons, they have decided to not air anything in HD this season....at first I thought because they were under new UPN slanted ownership that they were refusing to air WB programming in HD, but I haven't seen them air any UPN programming in HD either. Namely the many shows which I enjoyed last year in HD from them...was there anything new that I was trying to follow this season?

So, since they aren't transmitting HD, there's no reason to waste my time recording the OTA DTV signal. Sure it is a bit clearer than analog SD by cable. But, I can record cable source from any of my ReplayTVs. But, only two of them can record from OTA HDTV...and I'd rather get content that is in HD.

ATP and Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Join Together for Hurricane Katrina Relief

Here's something new for me that I forgot to tell the world about. For the last few days, I've been doing two strange things.

 1. Watching Sports
 2. Watching Live TV

But, I had come across USAHD on my SA8300 DVR a while back, which apparently is largely added for US Open coverage (meaning I guess it'll be going away soon).

And, while channel surfing in HD one evening...I ended up watching it.

I guess the fact that it is in HD, was a big factor. Well, I guess this isn't totally strange, when I first got the HDTV....I was watching the Calgary Flames attempt to take the Stanley Cup. And, when coverage switched to ABC, I had to watch it live OTA. Though I wasn't a convert yet, so I was also recording in SD, and switch back and forth depending on where things were when I got to turning the set on (switching back to SD when I wanted to pause...)...though this was the catalyst for playing around with recording downconverted HD on a ReplayTV.

Back to the US Open, later I sacrificed stuff in my HD-DVR and scheduled recordings of some of the coverage, because I didn't want to miss the semi/final coverage and some of it wasn't at convenient times.

It was kind of intense and sad watching the women single semi's, perhaps I because I was rooting for Elena Dementieva and later Maria Sharapova ;D The match with Maria ran long, so I missed the ending...though I guess I didn't really miss anything. I felt like screaming that she should smile, but I wasn't watching that live....

Though it was good watching the final still....rooting for Kim Clijster....the rough part was that it ran over the scheduled slot, so the HD recording cut me off. Though I had padded the SD recording of it on my ReplayTV. (there is no USAHD OTA :..( )

Boy, it was really terrible having to watch the remainder of that in SD. My interest in continuing to watch faded pretty much after that. And, I deleted the rest of my SD and HD recordings...though I did watch part of the women's mixed finals. After all, got to see Elena again

ReplayTV keeps getting more valuable....

Link: http://www.livejournal.com/users/thedreamer68/2005/03/13/

Sometime ago I have fallen behind on using my ReplayTV to view down-converted HD.

Mainly because I have an HD DVR from the cable company....

Pretty much the main reason to continue using the ReplayTV with down-converted HD is either stuff I can record from HD, but won't get around to watching right away...because the HD DVR only holds about 15 hours worth of HD, so I have to watch it just about every night in order to avoid running out of space. And, Sinclair operates FOX and ABC in my area...so these stations aren't available on cable.

Then on March 9th, NBC went off the air....they are in the process of upgrading to a more powerful transmitter ... they do have a 1kW transmitter for the interim...though I hear it is currently at 750W, due to a problem with not having the right fuse for it.

Well, what happens....the HD DVR is on the blink.... And, there are new episodes of L&O:CI and Crossing Jordan tonight....

Since the problem couldn't be resolved over the phone, and the service call is scheduled for Tuesday...I was starting to pull my hair out (which is hard, because there isn't much to grab on to).....

But, luckily, it turns out that I can still receive NBC-HD OTA from my apartment...so at least I can now use my ReplayTV to get the shows. I can still get the shows in HD...and not have to resort to doing something alien like watching it live. ;D

Though I do have to rework my scheduling a bit...in case things don't get resolved on Tuesday.....I want to make sure I get to see this week's episode of Committed. :>>

ReplayTV and OTA HD vs SA8000HD

 I subjected some random forum to a rambling thought....

The gist is that for some reason Friday programming on my SA8000HD DVR tends to experience a lot of breakup and stuttering....and last Friday, watching Star Trek: Enterprise this way was intolerable.

So, I resorted to watching it whole, clean and intact via my ReplayTV from the downconverted OTA HDTV. Sure I lose some of the detail, and it is just the analog stereo output. But, at least I could watch it and not miss important bits of dialog here and there.

Now instead of subjecting some poor random forum to a long rambling thought, I will try to consolidate those things into this blog where they can be more easily ignored profess to be collected thoughts from my mind.
