Pair of Silver Sensors

Well, I did it....I finally tried this combination.

I mounted one silver sensor in the vertical and the other in horizontal, combined the two using a regular splitter and the another splitter to feed my two SIR-T351's.

I had observed once that in vertical, ABC (VHF 13) would come in good, though I would lose other stations (namely UPN and PBS)...probably because in this orientation it is more directional.

While in horizontal, I generally can get everything except ABC.

Until I made this change I was combining VHF rabbit ears with the Silver Sensor....set the Silver Sensor typically to what is best to get UPN and the rabbit ears to get ABC....whether I get PBS or not, wasn't a big deal. Usually it worked out that the unit on the right would work, and the unit on the left would not. Though the Silver Sensor would be aimed significantly different than the other...so I figured stuff in the walls and location w.r.t. windows was the factor.

And that was a Silver Sensor and a Rabbit Ear on each receiver.

Too early to tell the long term reliability of this setup, but hopefully I won't have to be fidding with 4 antennas every other weekend.

Upcoming projects

Well, today I found a box waiting for me by the front door.

Inaddition to a Bluetooth headset, that I want to bound to my BB7100t. I had thrown in a few other items in the order.

A SATA controller. Wonder if it'll work in my Linux server, and allow me to reuse the extra SATA drive I have. Though I guess I have to move up the plan to offload essential services from that Linux server to the other Linux server that I've been building.

A couple of USB powered notebook coolers. To add cooling to the OTA HDTV STBs in my rack. They'll be powered off of the USB ports on the respective ReplayTVs. Since the boxes will get moved, I'll need to readjust the antennas....I think at the same time I look to see if combining and splitting will help my situation.

The situation is that if I aim the antenna a certain way, I can get ABC, but lose everything else. And aimed another way...I can mostly get everything....except ABC. Though sometimes FOX complicates things, likely due when they mess around with their power level. If I am right at FOX, I lose UPN which is far away... ABC,FOX,NBC,CBS,PBS are about 9-12 miles away from me...but UPN is 33 miles away. Actually, ABC and FOX are the closest two stations to me....

Anyways....I guess we'll find out when I mess around with things on the weekend.

Last Drive Upgrade?

Saturday night (into early Sunday AM) I upgraded the drive in the 5040 Refurb to 250GB. After all, I'm recording all that HD in Medium...and I'm keeping 4 of each show...that adds up to a lot.

I'm surprised by the number of show requests I get on Poopli for shows I've recording from HD.

When I put the unit back, I put it in at an angle. So that the blue LED would be visible from where I sit....was having trouble telling if it was on or not. So many different reasons why it might not be responding to my remote, etc. Or not getting the expected video output. Need the visual indication to narrow reasons down.

While I was at it, moved the light to the otherside of my rack...and set it inline with the screen (or slightly behind it)....keeps the light from this lamp off of the front. Another improvement....

Meanwhile, the new DVD player is on hold....but I'm still planning a UPS shuffle....

Samsung SIR-T351 & ReplayTV

Well, I got it working....

Selected Satellite box....Samsung/Other -> 7110 and fine tuned (changed minimum number of digits to enter to 2...for what I tried it tuned fastest this way).

First time I selected DirectTV as my lineup, and deleted all the non-local channels. Only problem is it bumped my standard cable line up by add 1000 to the digits. For such a small number of local OTA channels...that is kind of annoying.

So, I used WiRNS to pipe in a smaller lineup....this put the OTA HD channels after the standard cable line up....a side effect is that it only added 100 to the numbers. Standard cable ranges on channels 2-71.

Only problem is I'm not happy with the results....

The HD stations send 16:9 source all the time....just black borders on the side when the show is 4:3. The box on SD letterboxes the 16:9 source...by default....which puts borders top and bottom.

So when the show is 4:3 is makes for a really small picture with borders on all four sides. I could choose zoom, which but then I'll lose the sides of realy 16:9 shows.

Probably will be less of an issue once my 43" TV arrives....just looks really bad on my 21" TV.

Plus I'll probably one use it when I want to record 16:9 HD content in SD .... on to my ReplayTV.

I'm probably gonna break down and rent the cable company HD DVR to timeshift HD shows. Perhaps someday there'll be a ReplayTV that will do HD. I hated the non-HD DVR...and I don't think anything has changed in the HD version...except that it can do HD, store less, but comes with a bigger drive..... Apparently a 160G drive instead of an 80G drive...and record about 16 hours instead of 32 hours. (32hours on 80G to 16hours on 160G).

Now instead of subjecting some poor random forum to a long rambling thought, I will try to consolidate those things into this blog where they can be more easily ignored profess to be collected thoughts from my mind.
