Oops, that was fast.

I had started the quest to research what cordless phone I would get to replace my current 5.8Ghz one, since it doesn't get along with the Amphony 1520.

I had kind of narrowed it down to a 2.4Ghz phone that I had come across on eBay, a Uniden DCT646-3. Well, I bought it. )-o

At first I was questing for a 900MHz phone...but there doesn't seem to be much (or any) in the way of *NEW* digital (DSS) 900Mhz phones. Making it even harder to find one with the features that I would want. Namely handset speaker phone, multi-handset capable or included, VMWI, CID.

I know that 2.4GHz and WiFi don't get along...but consensus is that WiFi doesn't prevent a 2.4Ghz phone from working and the 2.4GHz phone only causes performance degradation to the WiFi. And, in the congested 2.4GHz that is life in a condo, near apartments, near a major university....it is kind of something I'm stuck with. Plus it is still my plan at some point to replace the bridge portion of my WiFi network with something else.

Like the phone demarc is in the room where the DSL modem is, and the condo is wired with CAT5....so maybe I'll put the DSL modem directly on the incoming line? And, use the condo's CAT5 for networking. Though my Living Room is laid out wrong for this to really work right now...and no plans to move the main computer to the other bedroom. But, if I did move the computer, than it could be a definite possibility. Or the condo's CAT5 would only link the Living Room to the 'computer' room. And, I would keep WiFi for the stuff in the LivingRoom. On the basis that they are close enough to cope....plus I still want WiFi for my DPH-540 and my laptop(s).

Setting up another WRT54GS

Well, I decided it was time to setup the other WRT54GS....in anticipation of getting Yahoo!DSL...which I ordered just as I was losing hope of getting Cox in time.... though I ended up getting it just in time, so I was able to check online if I needed to go into work at 12:01am or not :>>

But, I decided not to cancel the order, even though I don't know how to live with landline again (and it is rather expensive considering that it is just basic local only service). There was a time where I thought about running a dual WAN home network, and it looks like I'm gonna do this. ;D

So, to start this process....the first thing is to find my WRT54GS. I tried to remember which box it might have been stashed into, and hoped to myself that I at least marked on the box that it was in there. After about two hours of digging around, I noticed that it was sitting on the bottom shelf of my computer desk. Guess I had previously found it, and set it aside for this future event....

Now to check my laptop so that I can replace the firmware with Sveasoft and load in my various customizations.

Staying up for an early departure

Back on June 19/20, I blogged that I was staying up over night because I had an early AM flight and decided to just stay up for it.

I found it incredibly difficult to do...and after a while, I seemed to run out of stuff to do online to keep myself occupied. So, I threw in some TV watching to help pass the time.

Well, now I'm trying to do it again.... :**:

Only, I'm finding it even harder to do...because I have no cable TV yet, and no broadband. I'm alternating between using my old AT&T BusinessNet dialup account and my BB7100t as a GPRS modem.

Problems with "Latest iptables tweaks on 'box'"

Link: http://lawrence.chen-online.net/index.php?title=latest_iptables_tweaks_on_box&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1

For what was apparently the first time since I made this tweak...I was trying to participate in a webcast. And, I was getting very inconsistent and choppy results that didn't make any sense. Because things had been working great the week before.

At first I blamed my ISP...but couldn't find any evidence of problems with other applications and transfers. So, it was just the one application that wasn't working.

Though with all the chatter of ISPs that block certain protocols...they could be interferring with the a/v stream.... There was report of a bad 'line' during a call the other day....so maybe an issue for me, though I think there were other issues (like the fact that the other ends insist on using speakerphones.)

Anyways, back to the issue with the 'webcast'.....I started trying to think of what changes I had done to my network last weekend.

Latest iptables tweaks on 'box'

Last night I discovered that the reason local IVS transfers weren't working, was that one of my RTVs was trying to use the loopback method to transfer the file. Except that I don't have loopback enabled on my router...and I don't really want to change that.

What had happened apparently was that the box had tried to start the transfer at one time, when WiRNS was down or uncooperative....so it had switched from querying rddns-production.replaytv.net to rddns-production-1.replaytv.net, and since this wasn't being intercepted by my WiRNS setup....it was getting my external IP for the other RTV :|

To get things working last night, I updated my WiRNS configuration to intercept this name as well... and, again the need for loopback has gone away, but I felt the need to look at my iptables setup on box to see why I couldn't get this working.

lhaven: The Reconstruction Continues

After recovering the /boot and /(root) filesytems on lhaven, I discovered that the data filesystem on the same disk was also damaged. The difference being it could at least recognize it as a filesystem, so I let fsck to do its damage.

Lots of stuff got disconnected, etc. But, they all look like old and files that I could tolerate losing....

Namely it affected the old /home location (which is now on a different disk, but I had kept the old location as a backup) and what are supposed to be the backup of my iTunes music folder. There was pretty much only one area that I didn't want to lose, and it seems okay.....1 of 3 DVArchive volumes on this system.

Was about to give up when....

...power returned.

I was about to try taking a shower by candle light (well, actually flash light) when the power came back on....at least the hum of power came back, since I had gone around and made sure the lights were all off, etc.

So, I went to check on various things....some minor issues after power loss, I could live with. But, the one that was a problem.....my linux box known as 'lhaven' failed to boot.

The /boot and /(root) filesystems were damaged.

Darn the power went out....

....and looks like another Cyberpower UPS has failed me. The one handling my home network equipment dropped instantly.

Meanwhile sounds like the race is on to see which UPS will tank next....the main one being the UPS that the ReplayTV recording The Tonight Show with Jay Leno

Darn...looks like it didn't make it :..(

Strangely, it is the SmartUPS that sounds like it'll be annoying me for the longest....I used to dislike APC, but looks like Cyberpower is moving to my bad list.

Now to wait for the power to return, so I can go to bed....and do all the things I need to do before I can

Upgraded my Laptop's Memory

Link: http://www.vikinginterworks.com/pp/T2700DDR_512S.html

Back on March 22nd, I decided to take the plunge. buy.com had sent me a 10% off coupon. As I was preparing to buy the Kingston brand of memory for my laptop, buy.com suggested the Viking InterWorks brand. Since it was cheaper, that's what I went for.

After lots of waiting, they finally sent me a message on March 28th that my order had shipped and charged my credit card. And, then they didn't actually hand the envelope over to USPS for delivery until March 31st.

Today, I found it in my mail box...and after taking care of a few things, I set off to upgrade my laptop.

No major issues were encountered in the process. Though my hibernation file doubled in size and became fragmented....but that was simple enough to correct.

Decided to do something about the flaky SELECT....

Link: http://www.hifi-remote.com/jp1/disassemble/

Over time my URC-6131 remote has been getting harder and harder to work the select and arrow navigation on my ReplayTV menus.

I had tried battery swaps and various things, but finally accepted that I may have to resort to opening up the remote and applying the FAQ response for select button problems with these style of remotes.

So, while killing time after the arrive of my new 'box' and before my upcoming phone interview....I found myself trying to pry open the remote (while watching some shows from my ReplayTV at the same time)....

Well, as it was reported there was this 'liquid' under the select button....I cleaned the pads and put the remote back together.

While I had it opened, I also pushed the IR LED forward...which I hear will help widen its range.

Well, reworking the buttons...things aren't any worse than before. I suppose it has improved a little bit...but it still isn't 100%. :..(

Hopefully the remote will last for as long as I keep my ReplayTVs going.....
