Software Wish: "I'm Busy"

I was just thinking now there ought to be a program (for Windows) called "I'm Busy" (or "IM Busy", though it should work more than just IM programs).

I just had another phone interview, which I thought was very challenging and interesting...hopefully I'll get at least some response from it. Anyways, each time that I have one of these calls, I've gone to various programs in my system tray to quiet things down.

Namely, I set busy (or on the phone) status on each of the IM programs on my computer (ICQ, AIM, Y!, GTalk, MSN....I guess that's everything, at work I used to have Rhymbox....because Livelink IM uses Jabber, but requires a client that does SSL...there have been others, but lack of buddies on those has had me discontinue them inorder to keep sufficient real estate on my screen open ;) )

But, there's other things I want to toggle when setting 'on the phone' state. Namely, change ANT4MC to offline status (so I won't have the computer announcing the arrival of new mail to the dozens of accounts I have) and change BOINC Manager to 'suspend'. Because when BOINC is running, my computer sounds like a jet engine.....

Anybody now if such a program exists?

New Automatic S-Video Switcher

Got an unexpected surprise from UPS today. I ordered this on the weekend, and had no indication that it had been I wasn't expecting it today...given that yesterday was a holiday for some people (there are no holidays...or weekends...when you are unemployed :..( )

A few days ago, I was wondering why a program I was watching from downconverted HDTV seemed almost black and white....just the hint of color. Wasn't until I noticed that the commercial advance indicator was also affected, that I figured that it was something wrong in my connections.

Eventually, I found that temporarily switching to another source and back would clear up the problem....temporarily. :**:

As it happened, the ReplayTV I was watching was the one that directly connects to the Sima SVS-4 (rather than the others that go through Sony SB-V55A boxes).

So, I guess that means the Sima SVS-4 4-input/2-output automatic S-video switcher was dying. I had acquired it used from eBay, and it replaced a Sima SVS-4D that also had problems. I thought about scoping out eBay for another such unit, but decided that I would probably prefer something new this time.

SA8300HD DVR Let Down

Well, last night my SA8300HD DVR let me down. :..(

Whenever possible, I've been double recording....especially the shows that I really do want to watch in HD.

Double recording in that inaddition to have the SA8300HD DVR record the show, I also recorded the downconverted HD from OTA HDTV onto a ReplayTV. Though ABC and FOX had priority for getting scheduled into my ReplayTV, because these aren't available by cable (darn Sinclair Broadcast, forcing the public to use other means to get those shows if they get I'd get a Video iPod if it did 16:9....)

Well, last night there were shows on FOX/ABC that I couldn't do double recording....well, normally there isn't, but there was a movie on FOX last I opted to record that instead of my regular shows.

The SA8300HD DVR decided to lock up and reboot during the recording of a couple of shows last now I don't have these shows from HD, even though the shows were from CBS and NBC....I could probably have rationalized watching what it had recorded if the crash had been at or near the start or perhaps in the middle. But the it lopped of the ends of the shows. It may as well not have recorded it at all if it was going to do that to me.

The Mondo 'Box' Recovery

Well, looks like 3rd time is the charm.

While, this one gave a lot of spew that made me worry that it also wasn't going to work. It is currently running a 'compare', which is a good sign. The previous two times, "mondorestore" wouldn't run at all.

'Box' Recovery Update

Well, the restore completed and everything seemed to be running fine.

As my final recovery operation, I wanted to make a working mondorestore CD set for this machine.

Turns out the version I had installed are the mondo/mindi RPMs from the SuSE 9.3 install CD. Which others have noted as not working, but no updates from Novell for them.

So, I went to the mondorescue site, and then remembered that the latest version of SuSE that there is an RPM for is SuSE 9.1. Which I was pretty sure didn't work, but I installed the latest stable version and tried it anyways.

'Box' Recovery in Progress

I managed to get 'box' up sufficient to run a least I thought I was running a backup :lalala:

There were some files lost during the repair of the filesystem, but none of them seemed critical for what I use the machine for....well, at least to the extent of the important uses of the machine (most of the damage affected its ability to do X and KDE).

At 11pm last night, the backup still had about 2 hours to I went to bed :zz:

Maybe it is Mondays that are conspiring against me :..(

Because....almost exactly a week after the last harddrive died....another harddrive has failed.

This time the harddrive in my Linux internal router. >:XX

Immediate impact is that IVS transfers for ReplayTVs is halted....and gradually other parts of my home network will collapse around it.

The machine is a really old PC that I scrounged was running off of a 40GB harddrive from an old ReplayTV.....not sure how I'll resurrect it. Hopefully I can get the old drive up enough to back it up, and then see about what to restore to. Probably one of the other old 40GB drives from my ReplayTVs.

"Number 6" is alive :!:

Well, I popped home for lunch, not feeling like make the hike in the cold to the Subway...and not really sure what I what kind of Subway sandwich I was in the mood for today.

Shortly after arriving home, there was a knock. It's UPS with my new winter gear.

After quickly trying it on and liking it. :>>

I moved to wondering what else I might do....I keep looking at "Number 6", so I decide why not. |-|

I'm going to do the upgrade of it now and it'll be all ready for tonight's programming, etc.

And, maybe I'll do something else this go out U-(

Additional Maxtor OneTouch II 300GB drive here

The FedEx guy showed while I was in the shower, but fortunately he left it by the front door.

I'll probably add it to my system at lunch today...and redo the last recycle backup...which overflowed the current 300GB OneTouch II (and has part of the data stored on to the drive that it was backing up).

300GB drive from is here

It arrived with plenty of time to spare before a scheduled 1pm phone interview. ;)

Now, I thinking what should I do with it.

When I ordered it, the plan was to use to resurrect "Number 7".

But, being in a hurry (and to be able to record Bones and House), I rushed the resurrection of "Number 7" by freeing up a drive from my DVArchive setup. With the intent that this new drive would then go back into my DVArchive setup.

But, I've been putting off doing an upgrade on "Number 6", and given how smoothly the replacement went (given that I didn't need to copy any of the old data...especially the MPEG one). I'm thinking that I might do the same as the upgrade for "Number 6".

Only problem is that there's stuff on "Number 6" that I'll need to archive first....given that I haven't gotten around to watching it yet and don't want to lose it (there was stuff on "Number 7", but I didn't really get a choice...though I'm thinking of trying a freezer resurrection and seeing what rtv_extract can do for me).

...oh, and I'm kind of low on archive space at the moment....

But, I don't think there'll be any more drives this year....
