"Number 7" is alive!

The transplant went smoothly, without incident.

The hard part was remembering how to go through setup again, to get everything back to the way it was. Or that some of the shows that I record on this box...aren't airing in the next 2 weeks....

Wonder if I'll do a similar transplant when it comes time to do "Number 6". :|

Seagate 300GB OEM Drive from TigerDirect.com

Link: http://wwwapps.ups.com/etracking/tracking.cgi?tracknums_displayed=25&TypeOfInquiryNumber=T&HTMLVersion=4.0&InquiryNumber1=1ZW7X2360310225297

I've hit the UPS Package Tracking page a few times today, hoping to see when they'll give an ETA for this drive.

And, now it shows a "Scheduled Delivery" for November 16th (tomorrow).

That's good....though I've pretty much settled on using the Seagate 250GB OEM Drive from TigerDirect.com that I got earlier this month for my WiRNS/DVArchive server as the new drive for my dead ReplayTV.

The drive was only being used for DVArchive storage...and this morning I started moving shows from it to my other DVArchive server. Then at 9:20, DVARchive quit....because its one of the days that Retrospect is schedule to run (at 9:30). DVArchive normally isn't restarted until 16:30, but I knew it would be done before then (since it only backs up my C: drive, which isn't that big.) But, I planned on coming home for a late lunch and restarting DVArchive on moving the remainder.

In the gap between 9:20 and 9:30, I decided a few other shows could go to another DVArchive storage area to help with things. Those files went to the C drive, because it is faster to copy between C and one of the firewire drives than between firewire drives (should be obvious why, eh? :>> )

Anyways....the remaining DVArchive move was done before I finished lunch, so I started to prep for the RTVpatch (delete the old partition, let the computer bluescreen -- which it always does when I exit 'Computer Management') And, then the actual patch operation should be pretty quick and that'll leave the actual drive swap for when I get home tonight.

I guess I really wanted all the extra drives hanging off of gumby to be 300GB drives :!:

Meanwhile...got another OneTouch II

Link: http://www.buy.com/prod/Maxtor_300GB_OneTouch_II_FireWire_and_USB_Hard_Drive/q/loc/101/10382114.html

The stuff on my main desktop has grown to exceed the capacity of the current Maxtor OneTouch II that the system is backed up to. So, it is time to get another drive. I'm also thinking that I'll switch the connections to USB 2.0 from Firewire. Though that may involve the addition of another USB 2.0 hub.

I had intended to get this around this time, though the recent spat of drive failures wasn't part of the plan. Plus there was also the plan to upgrade the first drive [120GB] in my main desktop. But, I guess now I'm going to wait for 500GB drives to come down in price. :P

The harddrives are conspiring against me?

U-(

Today around 15:55, the power went out in my building. I was accessing my computer from work....and didn't lose my connection until about 10 minutes later. And, then things were reachable.

When I did a traceroute there was nothing beyond the gateway from Level 3 to Time Warner. Though later everything appeared except the local net. But, I didn't realize that the cause was a power outage until I got home.

From my estimates.....the various analog clocks that I have, the power was out for about 50 minutes. Only one UPS stayed during the whole outage.

But, that's not what this post is about. The other significant thing standing out, post outage, was a bright blue light shining across my apartment from the top ReplayTV. There was also a bright blue light from the bottom of my component stack...but that's the Momitsu V880N.

Anyways that ReplayTV was looping away...at "Please Wait..." Looks like the harddrive is toast. Come to think of it, it might have been the ReplayTV that had trouble starting once....the kind of thing where I unplugged all the inputs and then it worked....and I didn't think anything about it again. But I guess this time it is gone.

So, I rushed over to TigerDirect.com and bought a new Seagate 300GB drive. While a 250GB would be sufficient...I already got a Seagate 250GB from them this month, and there's the rebate restriction. So, I got the 300GB...even though rebate isn't supposed to be a factor in getting the drive.

Though OnRebate.com had been pretty good in the past, though that recently changed..... Used to be $1 surcharge to get the rebate in 1-2 weeks, instead of 8-10 weeks, by PayPal. Now they want a $5 surcharge to get you the rebate in 1-2 days by PayPal. And, if you don't want that high surcharge taken out...they say 8-10 weeks by PayPal....

Of course, I treat PayPal money differently than a check rebate. Because any money that lands in my PayPal account is usually spent in an eBay auction.... ;D

After I ordered, I saw that Outpost.com has the Retail Kit version of the drive (TigerDirect.com's is OEM) for the same price, and it has a $50 (instead of a $40) rebate.

Though given my current situation...PayPal is probably easier to get my money.

Oh well....

Gumby is Dead

:..(

Gumby became unresponsive over lunch today...finally I rebooted, and it wouldn't start (wouldn't progress beyond the BIOS scan of IDE devices).

After much fiddling it made an effort to start, except it kept blue screening. INACCESSIBLE BOOT DEVICE. Not a good sign. Trying F8 and various options...finally I reached the conclusion that it is dead.

Hopefully the other 120GB drive I have somewhere will work and the Retrospect that came with my Maxtor OneTouch II will work. Otherwise, it might be a major loss.

Though I do have the original 80GB drive still from the October 23rd upgrade. But, a lot has changed on my system since then.

So, I would prefer if I can recover from Retrospect....especially since it ran a backup this morning.

But, first to see if the very old recovery cd will get me to the point to where I can try doing the restore.

UPN53 bites the dust

After watching a large number of bad recordings of stuff from NBC-HD, I decided, last night, that I really should check the aim of my antennas.

After going through the channels and tweaking the antenna around trying to see if I can find a sweet spot that can receive all the stations, which exist in 3 different directions from my QTH.

Basically, I found a spot where I could get everything except PBS...or UPN. PBS is a problem because it is much further off from the other two directions, while UPN is much further away than the other stations.

Last night, I opted to leave out PBS, because I so rarely record anything from it.

This morning I changed my mind, as I found the desire to record something from PBS.

I decided that it was time to remove UPN from my OTA HDTV recordings. Of course, it is WWHO/UPN53's fault. For unknown reasons, they have decided to not air anything in HD this season....at first I thought because they were under new UPN slanted ownership that they were refusing to air WB programming in HD, but I haven't seen them air any UPN programming in HD either. Namely the many shows which I enjoyed last year in HD from them...was there anything new that I was trying to follow this season?

So, since they aren't transmitting HD, there's no reason to waste my time recording the OTA DTV signal. Sure it is a bit clearer than analog SD by cable. But, I can record cable source from any of my ReplayTVs. But, only two of them can record from OTA HDTV...and I'd rather get content that is in HD.

I've decided....

....that the next time I need to do work on 'box', that I'll get a new machine to replace it.

Even though all I need is a lowly PC to run Linux to serve DNS, DHCP, NTP, SSH and be a router and as bonus do ivs-status-sniff and BOINC for me.

The DNS/DHCP/NTP are core services to my home network (and since all my IVS traffic goes through it, that's also of fair importance).

As you might recall, when I experienced a boot failure on the old machine (a desktop GX100), I rushed over to eBay and bought a SFF GX110. Figuring it would be a minimal change, so migrating the Linux system would be minimal (the kind where I just transplant the drive and it works...I've done these before at work). And, it was cheap. Though it came with no HD or memory, though neither big points. Since I was planning to transplant the HD and I already had some DIMMs from a different GX110.

Today is upgrade day.

For some reason today is the day.

At work, I'm upgrading an IBM pSeries Server (model 615 6E3) to be a dual boot AIX 5.2 and AIX 5.3 QA machine.

The machine was originally delivered with a pair of 36GB drives, one as rootvg and the other as vg00. A 73GB drive was ordered for it, and moved vg00 over to this drive (extendvg->migratepv->reducevg)...so that the old 36GB drive would become the AIX 5.3 disk.

Used alt_disk_install to clone the rootvg to hdisk1 and next is to upgrade that system to 5.3. Wrote a pair of scripts so switching between the two will be braindead easy....once somebody cracks the root password (actually, I've already given it out...) I thought about sudo, but that's too much work and once I'm gone...there'll be no more control on who has the root password, etc.

Problem right now is that the attention light comes on everything the machine is booted, it is reporting a scsi bus problem. Since the only change was the 73GB drive, it is suspect.

ATP and Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Join Together for Hurricane Katrina Relief

Link: http://www.tenniskatrina.com/

Here's something new for me that I forgot to tell the world about. For the last few days, I've been doing two strange things.

 1. Watching Sports
 2. Watching Live TV

But, I had come across USAHD on my SA8300 DVR a while back, which apparently is largely added for US Open coverage (meaning I guess it'll be going away soon).

And, while channel surfing in HD one evening...I ended up watching it.

I guess the fact that it is in HD, was a big factor. Well, I guess this isn't totally strange, when I first got the HDTV....I was watching the Calgary Flames attempt to take the Stanley Cup. And, when coverage switched to ABC, I had to watch it live OTA. Though I wasn't a convert yet, so I was also recording in SD, and switch back and forth depending on where things were when I got to turning the set on (switching back to SD when I wanted to pause...)...though this was the catalyst for playing around with recording downconverted HD on a ReplayTV.

Back to the US Open, later I sacrificed stuff in my HD-DVR and scheduled recordings of some of the coverage, because I didn't want to miss the semi/final coverage and some of it wasn't at convenient times.

It was kind of intense and sad watching the women single semi's, perhaps I because I was rooting for Elena Dementieva and later Maria Sharapova ;D The match with Maria ran long, so I missed the ending...though I guess I didn't really miss anything. I felt like screaming that she should smile, but I wasn't watching that live....

Though it was good watching the final still....rooting for Kim Clijster....the rough part was that it ran over the scheduled slot, so the HD recording cut me off. Though I had padded the SD recording of it on my ReplayTV. (there is no USAHD OTA :..( )

Boy, it was really terrible having to watch the remainder of that in SD. My interest in continuing to watch faded pretty much after that. And, I deleted the rest of my SD and HD recordings...though I did watch part of the women's mixed finals. After all, got to see Elena again
