Here's a cool site for creating your own Internet Shortcuts.

I just created one called "ivs", which takes you to the ReplayTV IVS tester.

Better yet, if you type something like:

ivs 00004-54832-37760

It'll test it right away.

Alas, the example doesn't work....guess Kevin Rose isn't doing IVS anymore.... :..(

Bad Drives....ARGH!!!

:##

I guess it was partly my own fault.

Last summer, I bought a retail 250GB Maxtor drive to upgrade a refurbished ReplayTV 5040. Well, a few months later the drive failed. It was the first ReplayTV that I had upgraded to 250GB to experience a drive failure. One key difference was that all the previous ReplayTVs were upgraded using OEM 250GB Maxtors.

So, I quickly rushed out and ordered another one of these, though the company I had ordered from in the past switched from free 2nd Day UPS to free 2nd Day FedEx....and that drive arrived DOA. So, there was an RMA process with that. Eventually, I got another drive and things have been working fine since.

ReplayTV keeps getting more valuable....

Link: http://www.livejournal.com/users/thedreamer68/2005/03/13/

Sometime ago I have fallen behind on using my ReplayTV to view down-converted HD.

Mainly because I have an HD DVR from the cable company....

Pretty much the main reason to continue using the ReplayTV with down-converted HD is either stuff I can record from HD, but won't get around to watching right away...because the HD DVR only holds about 15 hours worth of HD, so I have to watch it just about every night in order to avoid running out of space. And, Sinclair operates FOX and ABC in my area...so these stations aren't available on cable.

Then on March 9th, NBC went off the air....they are in the process of upgrading to a more powerful transmitter ... they do have a 1kW transmitter for the interim...though I hear it is currently at 750W, due to a problem with not having the right fuse for it.

Well, what happens....the HD DVR is on the blink.... And, there are new episodes of L&O:CI and Crossing Jordan tonight....

Since the problem couldn't be resolved over the phone, and the service call is scheduled for Tuesday...I was starting to pull my hair out (which is hard, because there isn't much to grab on to).....

But, luckily, it turns out that I can still receive NBC-HD OTA from my apartment...so at least I can now use my ReplayTV to get the shows. I can still get the shows in HD...and not have to resort to doing something alien like watching it live. ;D

Though I do have to rework my scheduling a bit...in case things don't get resolved on Tuesday.....I want to make sure I get to see this week's episode of Committed. :>>

DSLReports Line Monitoring

Link: http://www.dslreports.com/monitored/mine

Well, made another tweak to my router last night....contrary to recommendations, I set my UP/DOWN rates for QoS to higher values.

DSLReports Line Monitor - New Jersey

DSLReports Line Monitor - California

DSLReports Line Monitor - San Francisco

No noticeable impact on my latency....interesting spikes/dips though.

ReplayTV and OTA HD vs SA8000HD

 I subjected some random forum to a rambling thought....

The gist is that for some reason Friday programming on my SA8000HD DVR tends to experience a lot of breakup and stuttering....and last Friday, watching Star Trek: Enterprise this way was intolerable.

So, I resorted to watching it whole, clean and intact via my ReplayTV from the downconverted OTA HDTV. Sure I lose some of the detail, and it is just the analog stereo output. But, at least I could watch it and not miss important bits of dialog here and there.

WRT54GS & Lingo

Well, I removed some of the wiring nest...and worked in the WRT54GS.

Everything went smoothly...the only tweaks afterwards mainly involved getting PRTG and WallWatcher working again.

With WallWatcher, the WRT54GS seems to log way more. Or perhaps the old router was just ignoring more. Though it could just be interface that logging is done at. One thing I started seeing was all the broadcast noise on the WAN interface. Guess it explains why the activity light on the Cable Modem is on solid, even when I'm not doing anything.

I wonder if I should subscribe :?:

According to FedEx tracking, my WRT54GS should arrive tomorrow....it is going to be a busy weekend.

And, the real thing I wanted to tackle this weekend was catchup on some ReplayTV viewing and watch all the DVDs I have from NetFlix....since it has been over a month since I watched any....

Upcoming projects

Well, today I found a box waiting for me by the front door.

Inaddition to a Bluetooth headset, that I want to bound to my BB7100t. I had thrown in a few other items in the order.

A SATA controller. Wonder if it'll work in my Linux server, and allow me to reuse the extra SATA drive I have. Though I guess I have to move up the plan to offload essential services from that Linux server to the other Linux server that I've been building.

A couple of USB powered notebook coolers. To add cooling to the OTA HDTV STBs in my rack. They'll be powered off of the USB ports on the respective ReplayTVs. Since the boxes will get moved, I'll need to readjust the antennas....I think at the same time I look to see if combining and splitting will help my situation.

The situation is that if I aim the antenna a certain way, I can get ABC, but lose everything else. And aimed another way...I can mostly get everything....except ABC. Though sometimes FOX complicates things, likely due when they mess around with their power level. If I am right at FOX, I lose UPN which is far away... ABC,FOX,NBC,CBS,PBS are about 9-12 miles away from me...but UPN is 33 miles away. Actually, ABC and FOX are the closest two stations to me....

Anyways....I guess we'll find out when I mess around with things on the weekend.

Yet Another Poopli Updater Tweak (YAPUT?)

While looking to procrastinate going outside some more this weekend, I decided that it was time to do something about the annoying '?' in show names/titles on Poopli.

So, I delved into the updater code again...and added Replace("’","'") in a few select spots.

The updater containing this change is HERE

Now instead of subjecting some poor random forum to a long rambling thought, I will try to consolidate those things into this blog where they can be more easily ignored profess to be collected thoughts from my mind.
