End of DST 2010

So, Daylight Saving Time has come to an end this year. And, seems that there are still fewer clocks that I'm updating. Partly, because my new watch is atomic and does DST automatically now...and decided that clocks I don't use, don't need to be updated.

VX-7r clock continues to be a challenge every time I need to update it, but this time I figured it out without having to go online and track down its manual.

Tradition is to check the lamp timer on my HLN4365W1, and I had been in the service menu earlier this week...the image had inverted while I was switching between TiVos...not sure how that happened, but had to do a user reset to get the TV working again. Didn't look to closely at the upside down readout of the lamp timer. A quick peek now...its at 3701 hours.

So, I've added another 1337 hours since last end of DST. So, I probably have 1.5 to 2 years left. I had been thinking of replacing the TV ... though with other things that need replacing first, etc... I might plan on getting another bulb at some point. And, stop putting off the blu-ray player plans linked to getting a new display of 1080p...though a new display would have more HDMI inputs than my current display, which is kind of an issue.

Time to go take care of my smoke detectors....

Surround Air XJ-3800 Intelli-Pro Spare Filter

Link: http://www.amazon.com/o/asin/B000K3GK4M/00--20/

Soon after owning the Surround Air XJ-3800, I found I didn't like it and had plans to eventually replace it with something else.

That's because it uses a metal grid that require periodic cleaning, and that cleaning requires significant dis-assembly, cleaning, thorough drying and a difficult reassembly process. It is the difficulty in reassembly that reminds me each time that I hate it. >:-(

Well, as I blogged here, "I bought another air cleaner", I did. ;D

But, it was still a working air purifier...so I couldn't just toss it (plus there are others sitting around not yet tossed out). So, I moved it to another spot where I someday would like to have an air purifier...but can't yet afford the specific want that I want for that location. Figured I'd at least use it until such time that it needed a consumable replaced.... plus the location is by the entrance. :P

Well, last month it finally started flashing replace filter. So, it seemed that the end was near for it. Some time later it started flashing the clean metal grid. Seems that the end should be even sooner now.

Though I did recently pick up a few cans of Oreck AirCell cleaner, which is what I use to help clean the metal grid of the Surround Air XJ-3800. And, I think I would miss having an air purifier at this location now...but it is still far off in the future that I would actually get the desired air purifier....especially since new air purifier is >10x more expensive that a new filter for the XJ-3800.

And, I was on amazon.com recently looking to buy a bunch of things...to shoot for what will hopefully be the last time I need to get a shot on Wednesday before work (have an appointment next week, that might decide that there'll be another 3 months or something)... and I felt that there was one more item that I toss into my cart for Prime Delivery. Actually, after I had placed the order, I remembered that there was something else that I had been thinking of getting....and while getting that, I threw in the filter.

That one extra item was a CFL Bug Light. Starting to get dark again...and been wanting to get a bug light for some time, though I'm sure it'll be many years before the CFL that I currently have outside burns out. OTOH, it was part of the first order to replace the CFL in the kitchen. Of course, that CFL has been in service longer than the 4+ years that I've been living here. It was among the ones that I had brought with me from Dublin, OH. Occurs to me that I should've gotten more...there's one bedroom that I still haven't switched from incandescent to CFL. And, the one in my bedroom is starting to show its age. All my inside CFLs are full spectrum.

Anyways...this part of the Amazon.com/Prime shipment arrived one day early....so this morning before going to the doctor's office...I took the Surround Air XJ-3800 apart for cleaning and the replacement of its filter. Now back...I struggled for a while to get the silly grid to go back on to its frame, and then went to install new filter.

It wasn't coming out of the plastic easily for some reason...then I noticed that there's a chunk missing from the gasket and the bag is stuck to the spot of exposed adhesive....hopefully it'll still be sufficient. But, after this...it'll probably be the definite end for this air purifier (whether I have a new one lined up by then or not...) )-o

Wonder how to tell if the UV bulb in it is still working and effective? :?:

The Better Peephole

Link: http://www.hammacher.com/Product/78129

I finally got a peephole, I don't know how or why I put off so long being without one...though it probably won't change my habit of not opening the door in the evening when I'm not expecting anyone, but it is a concern that I'm opening the door with no idea on who is on the other side.

But, being that I bought this home with no existing peephole...and being the gadget freak that I am, I wanted something fancy...

First there was the Door Scope, I had seen it in action at a few friends places...and it seemed to be the kind of thing I'd want. Except it requires a big hole and I'm not equipped to cut such a hole myself, and seemed a big investment to take on for a one time thing (hopefully).

Then I came across the Digital Door Viewer on some gadget blogs, which seemed to be exactly what I wanted to get. Except that nobody seemed to sell it, and I couldn't tell how as a consumer that I could get it from them directly.... It was also kind of pricey for something I wasn't totally sure about...and there were plenty of other gadgets that kept my discretionary funds tied up with.

Then more recently, in a Hammacher Schlemmer catalog...I spotted The Better Peephole....it was a more affordable approach to what I wanted. So, eventually, I pulled the trigger and got it. I picked it up yesterday from the UPS Store.

Wasn't sure when I'd get around to installing it....but the mood struck me this Sunday, since I didn't otherwise feel like doing anything else. So, after putting some juice into a battery pack for my drill (I had purchased a 9/16" bit on a reducing shaft to fit my 3/8" drill, some time ago in anticipation of this project). I tried to drill a hole.

Drilling through the steel of the door turned out harder than I expected...which is probably a good thing about the door. But, then once I got through, little white beads popped out....I guess somehow I thought the fill of the door was going to be something equally solid. Surprise. Guess insulating is more important....

And, finally I got it all installed. And, that's my next disappointment....the image quality is dismal. Though I guess its a standard peephole with a fixed digital camera butted up to it....having some kind of focus control would probably help.

Perhaps the Digital Door Viewer will be a future purchase, since it appears camera element that mounts through the front of the door and has a wire to the viewer on the other side....so it should get better image quality. Hmm...

Start of DST 2010

Posting about having done my taxes for another year, after finding that I had blogged about having done so last year....made me remember another thing I blog about doing.

Which reminded me that I had forgotten to do the last step of my bi-annual daylight saving ritual.

I had pretty much tackled move clocks forward an hour and checking a few things when I got up this morning...but I had intended to wait until later in the day to test smoke detectors. But, starting into my taxes after returning from the grocery store...it slipped my mind until I was searching my blog for whether I had previously posted about 2008 taxes.

So, I jumped up and went and took care of each smoke detector and made it scream a little ;D

Once again, the updating the clock on my vx-7r stumped me ... some day I'll have that process remembered. At least this time I didn't have to hunt down a manual to finally do it.

Oh that reminds me, I didn't update my watch....even though I did wear it today.... :lalala:

Daylight Saving has ended....

Seems to have snuck up early this year. Also seems to be fewer clocks to check, or I'm just assuming more things have updated correctly on their own and other devices I just don't care if they have the right time or not. :lalala:

But, before I started this post...I remembered two other missed clocks. Now how do I set the time on my VX-7R, wish they didn't make it so complicated....where's the manual gone to. And, where is my watch hiding? :hmm:

Now in the past it was tradition to check how many hours were on the lamp timer on my HLN4365W1....but....oh what the heck, I'm gonna check it.

Wonder where the remote has disappeared to..... U-(

Guess I'll try the remote for my SIR-T351....that works. 2364 hours....so 1321 hours since last end of DST, so about 2-3 years left? Wonder what I'll get as my new TV? Wish they didn't stop making 50" DLP RPTVs. LCD & Plasma have such wide bezels that I have to go down to a 46" to find one that'll fit my stand.

Oh well, that leaves the last thing to do today is replace the batteries in my smoke detectors and test them.

shopamex and Duracell DPP-600HD

I have been meaning to get a Duracell DPP-600HD Powerpack for some time, as a backup power solution for my CPAP. That's the intended primary use. Though I'm sure I'd find other emergency applications for it....

While Amazon/Prime would be a cheaper faster way to get it...if I was doing cash out of pocket spending....since its ~$150+tax right now, and I've seen ~13x+tax. But, pulling the trigger on actually getting despite having been hit by a bunch of power outages recently....has been a problem. Other priorities and belt tightening.

Today, I saw that the 20% off shopAMEX promotion was going on again. So, I popped over for a look. And, saw that I had enough points to get a 600HD from a shopAMEX merchant. Now the price of the unit is much higher than Amazon.com, and there is a charge for standard delivery of it...so more expensive and slower. But, since its points it has a different feel to it.

While the 600HD was the first thing I checked via shopAMEX, it wasn't the thing that I was going to purchase at first. I remembered that I'm still looking for a new dresser to solve the disintegration of my old one and the piles of clean laundry cluttering up my bedroom floor. But, there weren't any suitable dressers available for the amount of points that I had left (and I didn't want to get an advance on points). Even though this means that I'll have to buy a dresser for much more...and the procrastination on it could mean I won't get one until next year....

So, not finding a suitable dresser under my points threshold....I went ahead and pulled the trigger on getting the Powerpack 600HD.

Woot: XT Fire Extinguisher – 2 Pack

Link: http://www.woot.com/Blog/ViewEntry.aspx?Id=8372

My latest Woot acquisition has arrived. On 2 for Tuesday last week, they featured these Fire Extinguishers. I got 2.

When I first moved into my condo there were no fire extinguishers on the property...though I had an old halon one, and later picked up an aerosol can like fire extinguisher.

Later with an impending visit by the fire marshal, the landlord came into all the units and put fire extinguishers under the kitchen sinks. I was leasing to own at the time.

Later I become owner, and he didn't ask for it back. But, nearing time for the yearly visit by the fire marshal he went around asking for all the fire extinguishers back so that they could be inspected. It never came back. Eventually a fire extinguisher was mounted to the wall by the stairs...one on each level. Guess that was sufficient.

Plus I still had mine.

But, I had been thinking of getting additional fire extinguishers just for the sake of convenience. Though buying fire extinguishers online is hard and it wasn't really something I wanted to walk 3 miles to and another 3 miles back to get. And, I didn't think it would be something I could do on impulse.

Finally got my front door rekeyed.

I've been thinking of doing this ever since I bought the condo that I had been leasing. Worried about what keys are out there.

Plus there have been two occasions where I've come home to find my front door unlocked.

First time I was still leasing, I had gone away to Calgary on Xmas holidays for a week and came home to find the door unlocked.

Second time was after I owned it, I yelled at the building owner about it and since then whenever they say they'll be around doing maintenance inside all the units...I take time off from work to make sure that my unit stays secure.

Evidently the reason is because the landlord doesn't believe in deadbolts, and won't lock them after someone has been in (even though I'm pretty sure the insurance company's discount for having deadbolts, assumes you use them.) And, like my door...units don't have doors that close properly (year round). Though my neighbor has it worse...if they don't close their door completely, it'll swing wide open on its own. And, there have been too many occasions where I've come home to see their door wide open and there's nobody home. Probably doesn't do much for the heating costs....

So, I had been looking at finding details on line about doing the rekey myself. Though not in any major hurry....plus nothing, except maybe buying completely new locksets, via Amazon.com.

Well, the new yellow pages came out a couple weeks ago...and I happened to flip it open to look at locksmiths. And, that got the gears turning again.

And, now with the upcoming trip to Penguicon...the combination of anxiety and paranoia (partly induced by my CPAP & sleep issues)....I went and called the first big locksmith add in the yellow pages and had Bandit Locksmith come out and rekey my front door.

Home Ownership and annual vist from fire marshal?

Today, the fire marshal showed up to test my smoke detectors...which I had been informed was an annual thing. Though I have no knowledge of it having occurring last year (and I've been a home owner long enough that I should know....)

The fire marshal showed up and poked all my smoke detectors with a stick and left. It was annoying because it uses up the battery, and I want to save the power for any real smoke during the bi-annual replace batteries and test that I do.

While I was waiting at home, I got an email that the fire marshal was showing up for their annual inspection at work today.

I commented to the state fire marshal that it was kind of annoying to take time off from work to let them into my private home. And, additionally, that the same day they want to inspect my place of work.

the state fire marshal was only there to inspect state property....and that maybe it was the city fire marshal that had shown up at my home, but it seemed odd.

He would call the city fire marshal and find out if they had been at my home, etc and get back to me. They did, and they told me the city fire marshal would be contacting me. He did, and had he known that some units at Collegiate Villas Condominiums were privately owned, he would've checked with the building owner to find out which units were. So, why didn't the building owners care about us condo owners?

:hmm:

Norton Antivirus 2009 is gone

Even though I still had 299 days left to my current subscription, I decided to nuke Norton Antivirus 2009 from my computer. Disabling stuff on it just so that I can use my computer was getting annoying.

First I had disable so that I can run BOINC projects on my computer, this means there's that annoying red X on the tray icon.

Today, I couldn't check my email because the inbound email scanner was broken....another thing that needed to be disabled. And, there were other quirks that seemed related, but I wasn't sure.

Of course, I don't like being unprotected. So, my employer has a site license for AntiVirus software...all on site computers are required to run it, but additionally employees and students are allowed to run it on their own computers. Once upon a time, it was Norton Antivirus that the University provided. But, a couple years ago they switched to Trend Micro. I think they just renewed for another 3 years.

So, I have installed Trend Micro. It has the annoying habit of identifying stuff that I want to run as spyware or malware and not giving any choice but to remove it....and without asking me. I had identd running on my desktop, probably left over from when I used a Windows IRC client. I vaguely recall that there was some other reason I had it, it didn't do anything dangerous...it was configured just to make whatever service that wanted to find it happy. But, during the Trend Micro installation...it silently saw it and uninstalled it from my computer.

A few years ago, it was uninstalling a home watching webcam software. It had classified it as spyware and kept removing it. Ya...it is spyware, its so I can spy on my home when I'm not home and see if anything is happening. I don't use it anymore, though I keep thinking I need to have something back again. Though I'm looking for something that is not computer dependent....

Oh well....
