update on Quicken Premier 2010

Well, I guess I've fully embraced and converted to using Quicken Premier 2010 to manage and monitor my finances...from MSMoney Plus.

The conversions kept crashing, but resulted in a file that seems to have most of my data. I had contacted support, which first got an email telling me to repair my MSMoney file and later suggested I create a new quicken file (with a short 8 character name and no special characters) and import the MSMoney...instead of direct convert.

Doing direct conversion had caused it to create a file named "Lchen's Quicken Data File.QDF", 'lchen' being the username I'm logged on as. Created a QMoney.QDF file, but it still crashed....in the same spot. Somewhere after Payee data.

So, I stayed with the "Lchen's Quicken Data File.QDF" result and ran Quicken in parallel with MSMoney, adding in daily updates etc. And, later migrating data that didn't convert over....my frequent flyer and reward accounts. (I didn't used to track reward accounts, until I discovered that there's an extra box on the reconcile dialog easily record the points...and after I finally used my points for stuff....search back on my shopAMEX experiences)

I have since renamed my Quicken Data File to a short, no space or special character, filename.

Meanwhile, Quicken support came back saying that they can't help me by email.... so I needed to use phone support to resolve the issue. Not seeing how talking to someone while trying things was going to be any better than email exchanges on trying stuff. I concluded that I couldn't really be helped any further on this.

So I mentioned how MSMoney was being annoying when I exit. And, back on the 21st, it was saying I had 10 days left to my service. Well, shortly after that a day disappeared moving my expiration up to March 30th. And, then yesterday when I started MSMoney, it announced that my service had expired...so another lost day.

So now, I've stopped using MSMoney Plus and relying on Quicken. I was liking that it checked more of the accounts that I check daily, there's one daily account that it doesn't get (daily) updates from (even though it supports it)...but it didn't work in MSMoney either. The only download option that I've seen on the site is to download my monthly statement in Quicken or MSMoney format...so I'm guessing that's all I'll get through one-click updates using Quicken.

But, I have email notification for cleared transactions turned on for the credit card, so I'll go by those to track what charges have cleared, etc. Plus it is no longer my primary card.

Hopefully there won't be any other surprises in Quicken as I continue to figure out the things I miss about MSMoney (the big one being cash flow reporting)...and maybe start to use other features of Quicken (some that existed in MSMoney, but I never got around to using either)....

trying to switch to Quicken Premier 2010

This is the second last weekend that I can make the switch to Quicken Premier 2010, before my copy of Microsoft Money Plus Deluxe expires.

It had been kind of annoying the last couple of weeks, with Microsoft Money warning of impending expiration and asking if I want to renew....where the renew doesn't do anything because Microsoft has discontinued the product, etc.

I'm sad, I've been using Microsoft Money since 98 (the version, I started using the software in 1997) to manage my finances.

I had originally intended to learn about Quicken and purchase it in December and start using it in the new year. In parallel to Microsoft Money and slowly migrate to it. Because I had heard horror stories about the conversion process (import/export and lose lots of info/detail)....but then I heard that there was going to be a direct conversion process available. Though the intent of the timing was still there....but other things came along and I got busy, so it got put off...and put off.

But, I had envisioned that I would finally purchase the software and make the conversion after I did my taxes (and hopefully before Microsoft Money Plus expires.)

I had never actually seen the expiration message before, usually upgrading to the latest version of Microsoft Money before well before then. Though I usually skipped a version here and there. Namely the progression was like 98, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007, Plus...I'm pretty sure that's right, vaguely recall having 2001 and making the switch from even years to odd years. There was something that was a bug in Microsoft Money, that was finally fixed in the 2001 version. Or it was some online download data format change, or both.

At the time it was one of the main reasons I was resisting the abandonment of Windows and switching to a Mac. Unfortunately, I've acquired a bunch of other things since then that are Windows only. Though VMware or VirtualBox was a consideration...there is a new wrinkle in why I'll likely go with a Windows box as my next host. That's CUDA projects in BOINC are mainly for Windows systems. There are a few Linux ones, but then only 64-bit Linux.

Anyhoo....I decided that this was the weekend to make the start. I had been moving the software in and out of my Amazon.com cart trying to decide on when I would finally get it. But, then I decided that I would opt to getting via Amazon Download. Part of me wanted the warm fuzzy of having a physical CD, that I can then lose when it comes time to reinstall...not sure what I'm going to do with all my apps when I finally get around to buying that new computer to replace my old circa 2003 computer.

I bought it and downloaded it yesterday, and figured I'd get to doing it today (Sunday).

Well, so far it hasn't gone so well. Everytime I start, and select conversion....it goes for a very long time, and then crashes. I worry about whether things are right and don't really want to go through the 12+ years of records to see what's missing. The initial screen doesn't look right to me, so that doesn't help....though who knows.

I then tried running file repair, still crashed. Removed my password (even though it did seem to have an issue), still crashed. Repair again....

Not sure what I'm going to do now. Wonder if I can take a couple weeks off from work to go through everything and see if things are right, etc.

:##

Or maybe I'll just accept no more online services and stay with Microsoft Money Plus. Though its going to have a big impact on my daily routine, and not sure what it'll do to my account tracking. There are accounts where the only updates I get are through online services, missing statements every now and then, etc. Plus the online service downloads have helped me catch fraudulent activity on my cards much sooner than if I had to remember to check the card sites manually or review statements.

Hmmm... :hmm:

Plus there's still that whole, what do I do when I finally upgrade to a new computer....

Firefox 3.6 changes where new tabs are put

I make use of the middle mouse button to open new tabs off to the side/background for later reading.

Especially useful with reading forums...I can go down the list of updated threads and middle click the new messages on each thread of interest off to a new tab. Especially useful on forums that clear the new message marker based on time rather than when you have actually gotten around to reading those messages.

But, Firefox 3.6 changed where new tabs go, and I couldn't find in the preferences where to change it back. Finally, found that I had to go into about:config and change this:

browser.tabs.insertRelatedAfterCurrent

to false.

Wonder what other 'bug' Firefox 3.6 has waiting for me.... :**:

Did my 2009 Taxes

I kind of knew that I would go all the way this time, much like I had done last year....the exception might be if TurboTax did something strange again. It didn't, so I went ahead and e-filed.

Sleep Cycle on my iPhone

Last weekend, while checking my usual daily websites....I came across mention of a gadget on gdgt called WakeMate. I have been toying with the idea of getting one of these gadgets for years, decades? Definitely well before I learned of my sleep disorders and started the therapy for them.

Now I still have other problems and eventually hope to start some kind of treatment for those. Soon I'll be done with the joys of taking iron pills for the 'anemia'.

So, while googling around trying to learn about WakeMate, I came across a review of Sleep Cycle. An iPhone app that also works by monitoring your sleep and trying figure out the optimal point in a window before your planned wake time to wake you.

Give that it was only 99cents, I decided I didn't have anything to lose by trying it. Though it was kind of inconvenient that it was Sunday when I found it. But, I decided to start using it right away....seemed safe enough to try.

Here's the sleep graph for my first night:

SleepGraphFeb22

The window the app does is 30 minutes, and this first night it woke me 30 minutes before my normal alarm. And, I certainly wasn't feeling it, so I ignored it and went back to sleep....ended up sleeping through to my normal 3rd alarm.

The 3 alarm sequence is radio alarm, which is followed with a beeper alarm, which is then followed by a light coming on....a 55W CFL 5000K lamp.

I continued to use the app...and by the 5th night (Friday morning) I woke a few minutes before my alarm, found a sleep graph of this:

SleepGraphFeb26

and was able to get out of bed. Had to hang around the bedroom to shush the alarm....but managed to get my morning things done and out the door at a good time.

I continued to run it over the weekend....

Friday Night/Saturday Morning:

SleepGraphFeb27

Saturday Night/Sunday Morning:

SleepGraphFeb28

Woke up good on Saturday and managed to do all the errands I wanted to get done....first going to Aggieville and then later going the other way to Westloop.

Sunday morning was also good, but then the lazy kicked in and I ended up not going out to do the other errands in the Westloop area. So, thinking I might hit Campus Food or something again. ;D

I wonder if I should ask about getting another Sleep Study and see what kind of sleep structure I'm having now. There's a Zeo product that get into sleep structure....though the forehead attachment for its sensors is a problem, since my CPAP mask covers my forehead. But, the Sleep Cycle app does show that it does take me a while to fall asleep now and the waking during the night...which sometimes takes forever to get back to sleep again. Could be much worse looking if I weren't taking a sleep aid....

Hopefully doing something about the next thing wrong with me will finally do it.

Finally upgraded my AppleTV to 3.0.1 +Boxee

Link: http://support.boxee.tv/forums/49599/entries/74649

I haven't used my AppleTV in a while, but I've been meaning to sit down and use it....and I sense with the coming holidays that I might have time to sit down and do some marathon watching of stuff.

So, I've been meaning to let the AppleTV upgrade to the latest 3.0.1, and later patchstick and get Boxee working on it again.

And, that's what I'm doing right now.

So far the procedure given has been going fine. And, once done....it'll just be a quick see that I can access my account in Boxee and be done. Since I have too much other stuff that I need to be doing today )-o

Another problem with karmic upgrade of box

Found another problem with my karmic upgrade of 'box'. The clocks on everything were starting to drift....well 'box' is my NTP server.

I check the ntp.conf, and it was still correct. Then I realized ntp started while bind wasn't....so it omitted a time server to sync with. (and nothing for the initial sync).

So, that's another thing to bounce in /etc/rc.local on boot.

I did find a posting somewhere that suggested apparmor was the causing problems, so I tried removing that....but that didn't solve the problem, though putting it back it did work once....but rebooting again to see if it was a fluke, seemed to say that it was. So, stick with /etc/rc.local as the more reliable way to make sure these things are running..... :**:

Wonder if there'll be a time where I remove this kluge to see if things are fixed...or not. :??:

OTOH, with box on a PowerSource 400, I kind of hope that it'll never go down during typical power outages. Of course, who knows if there'll be another extreme one, like the icepocalypse.

Upgrading box to karmic

With a couple hours to kill this morning, I decided to see about upgrading 'box' to karmic. Ideally it should've been LTS, but that's another story....

It gave an estimate of one hour to download. Well, it ended up taking those couple of hours. And, then a couple hours more to actually install the updates.

The upgrade was pretty straight forward...I didn't realize that server kernels were gone now, so at first it caught me off guard, guess I didn't pay attention when I upgraded the server at work.

The only problem during the upgrade was the it stopped named, and left things in a state where it could not be restarted. So, things were a bit quirky on my network without DNS, and the box had some issues...not being able to resolve its own name. For some reason during the original install, it had created /etc/hosts with my FQDN but no entry for just the hostname.

Then things went strange....rebooting the box, no DNS running. 'sudo /etc/init.d/bind9 start' and it would start fine. Reboot again....again no DNS.

So, remove and reinstall the package....reboot again, still no DNS. It starts fine by hand after things have booted, but not during boot for some reason. Well, add a line to /etc/rc.local to start DNS. Guess that does it for now.

Now instead of subjecting some poor random forum to a long rambling thought, I will try to consolidate those things into this blog where they can be more easily ignored profess to be collected thoughts from my mind.
