Firefox 1.0 Update at work

Well, the upgrade to Firefox 1.0 at work didn't go as well.

It crashed during the update, then the browser wouldn't start afterwards. Had to fire up IE, which looks so unfamiliar now, and download the full setup and install that overtop.

Then it was the process of updating extensions. Noticed a new problem. WindowsUpdate doesn't work. Don't really use now that the work machine has been upgraded to XPSP2 (even though officially IT still hasn't approved it). The other hard one to update was TripleSelect. Work machine only had version 0.2, which it disabled. And, it wouldn't let me install 1.3 until I removed it. My machines at home had version 1.2.

Firefox 1.0 on my Laptop

Again the upgrade was pretty straight forward.

Though it did complain about update difficulties for TripleSelect. Though it previous version wasn't disabled. And, all my Firefox installs have it.

But, I found an update and installed that.

I depend on TripleSelect to make up for the loss of the IE text selection 'feature', to cut and paste numbers from my 401k providers website into MSMoney. It doesn't use a table to render the table of numbers, so have to use text selection. And MSMoney doesn't like it if numbers are supplied without digits in front of decimal point or containing whitespace on the end....

The only other quirk about Firefox that didn't seem to get fixed in 1.0 is the Window title bar only shows the last updated tab. Closing the tab(s) or switching to other tabs (that have finished loading) won't update the title. Makes it hard to figure out what I'm looking at, especially when reading message forums from last read point. The message subject is either in the title bar or at the top of the page...neither of which are visible due to this quirk.

At least it works on Linux (wonder how those upgrades will go). Of course, my Linux box is headless at the moment, because I'm still waiting for the replacement of my Dell 1800FP.

Upgraded to Firefox 1.0

I was holding off on upgrading to Firefox 1.0 because many of the extensions I've grown dependent on weren't available for 1.0 initially.

But, yesterday, I upgraded the Firefox install on my DVArchive/WiRNS server, though it doesn't depend on as many extensions as my other 3 main installations. But, it didn't go too badly.

So, I decided that I would upgrade my main home desktop while passing time.... Only three extensions didn't work after the upgrade. Image Toolbar, Favicon Picker and Googlebar. Only Image Toolbar was common with the previous upgrade, and I knew where to get the update.

I managed to trackdown upgrades for Favicon Picker and Googlebar, so looks like everything is good to go.

Guess I'll upgrade my laptop next and then tomorrow when I'm back at work....upgrade the work computer.

Software Purchases

Does time fly?

Wait, I blogged on the 19th that I was starting my eval of Spambully. I thought I had 2 weeks to test it, but it expired this morning.

Anyways...I registered it.

Meanwhile, last night I decided to pickup an additional to license of RoboForms. Been using this for a long time on my main desktop, decided to have registered copies for my laptop and my computer at work.

Always seems strange buying my own software to use on my work computer.... ;D

PRTG

I've always been curious just how much traffic was flowing in and out of my home network, namely the pattern of the IVS usage.

Now I have been monitoring my broadband connection using the monitoring service at Broadband Reports.com. Which gives me graphs that look like this:

Which just shows that my latency goes up when I'm sending lots of shows.

Checking out Spam Bully

Link: http://www.spambully.com

Found out the SPAMAssassin settings are rather limited on my new hosting provider. Having it on results it too many false positives and no options for tweaking/training it.

The old provider had a .spamassassin/user_prefs file in the home directory of the shared account where I could control things. Though the new provider allows you to control which accounts are filtered by it. Useful, because I've had problems with eBay sellers not being able to reach me after an auction because of my spam filter.

Anyways, I've opted to not use it, because of the high level of false positives.

Now instead of subjecting some poor random forum to a long rambling thought, I will try to consolidate those things into this blog where they can be more easily ignored profess to be collected thoughts from my mind.
